Listening to most of Prince's women, it seems he enjoyed "falling in love" and the chase part more than the actual committed relationship parts that come after getting the girl. Always at least 2 in the wings, 2 being wooed and one on her way out. Yet, all the women felt loved for a while.

Prince made it clear that "Beautiful Ones" was written about Vanity; he played it in tribute to her after her passing and said "she knows about this one". It was in the movie Purple Rain which he created for Vanity and himself. Vanity Denise Matthews was certainly one of the most beautiful women ever created, in addition to Ms Appollonia, so it's easy to see how Vanity fits well into his song.

Wendy, Ms. Aquarius(musician). I have been a fan of Prince and The Revolution since I was a kid in 1986, I was 10 years old then. Great music, movies, comedy in the 1980s. The kids had fun memories!

The greatest interview so far. Can't wait for part 2! Prince was under so much pressure during that period. You can't imagine what he was going through with his management and Warners. A movie like Purple Rain was never done before and could have flopped badly

@@lolamann4705 If you read some of the good biographies you will learn most of the story. Brenda also confirmed important details in a more recent interview. She stated that Prince and Susan were "engaged" (not sure if she had a ring) before he met Vanity at the AMAs in '82 and brought her to MN the following Summer. When Vanity walked into his house for the first time Brenda and Susan were sitting in his living room. Vanity (obviously) lost it when she found out he had a serious thing with Susan, but of course, Prince convinced her to stay. Jill J. also confirmed in a more recent interview that Vanity became "the main girl" but Prince would also spend time with (aka sleep with) both her and Susan which would, of course, infuriate Vanity. It was a "harem" situation until Susan decided to step away from it at some point - probably during the 1990 tour.
@@KS-fd8cx yeah, I read this. I meant more about them being high school sweethearts. She is much younger and I donât believe they were at same high school. Also, I think Princeâs more serious GF was Kim Upshur, not Susan. Interesting tho, Iâve never read that Brenda said they were engaged. Iâll go back sometime and listen again. Thanks.
@@lolamann4705 Yes, it has been reported that Prince met Susan at some point when she was just 16 yrs old and in HS. I believe I read that his song "She's Just A Baby" came from Morris Day making that comment to Prince when he met her. Kim U. had been Princes girlfriend in HS. She was a cheerleader. As in typical Prince fashion, I'm sure he pursued Susan while still dating Kim. I imagine that Kim would have ended it if/when she discovered him with Susan. I may have it wrong about Brenda stating Prince and Susan were engaged. It was an audio interview on YT. I'm sure it's still there if you do a search.
I'm still learning so much about this Purple World that I didn't even register that Susannah is Wendy's sister!! (I always heard Wendy has a sister, but I could never figure out who ironically) So to hear the story about how Prince was confused when he saw Susannah at the party is hilarious LOL! Apollonia and Seth, I cannot tell you how much I enjoy listening to these conversations with all your guests. Thank you for allowing us all to be a fly on the wall for these talks. Susannah (and Wendy), when I was ages 4 - 8 The Partridge Family was MY WORLD, those were the first albums I ever heard, and your dad's keyboards on those eight LP's are just gorgeous. I'd love to know if you ever got to meet David Cassidy from being in the studio for those albums, and if so what was he like? Can't wait for part two of this interview.

Prince was involved with the most beautiful women in the world. In the eighties he was dating Susan Moosie, Vanity, Jill Jones, Sheila E and Susannah all around the same time. He went back and forth between his beautiful ladies.. Robin Power even said in her interview that she saw Vanity with him at a Purple Rain concert After Party after his so called breakup with her. He was involved with Jill Jones for a very long time from like 1981 to the late eighties. I would love for Apples to interview Susan and Brenda.
Angel Hampton: While it's true that Prince "overlapped" some of the women, Susannah was the only one in the 80's who helped to plan his Galpin home, lived with him, and got the diamond ring. Vanity left in '83 and stated during a television interview that she didn't see Prince for more than a couple years after she left. My guess is that they re-connected in '86 during the Parade tour. Vanity was also engaged to Nikki Sixx in '86. Prince and Susannah were having issues by that point. Jill Jones was in and out of the mix w/ Prince by '84. He moved her to NYC at some point in the '84-'85 time frame. Seems that Prince may have wanted her at a distance in order to keep things peaceful w/ Susannah. I think he may have had a deeper connection w/ Susannah - not just a physical attraction.
@@KS-fd8cx He was NEVER monogamous with Susannah or any one of them. Heck, JJ was sleeping with him from 1980-1990. Then Sheila E was in there by the time of the PR tour. Not to mention countless other pieces. He got Susannah a ring b/c he was manipulative and had to tell her she was not being cast in UTCM. He never intended to marry her. And Vanity was floating around by 1986. He also chucked her when he ended his "Revolution" era. People need to start connecting the dots and quit listening to these starry eyed tales of women who are rewriting history and rationalizing why they wasted their youth in a harem. JJ is the only one who keeps it real about Prince.
Jill Jones gave a very interesting interview with Apollonia back in early summer. Take a look at it. He gave Mayte a diamond ring and married her. May Prince rest in peace. He was loved by so many....

She did not impregnate herself. When it all said and done Prince had a beautiful life with all of his beautiful women. They all held a special place in his heart. I would like to see a movie about Prince and his beautiful ones. Imagine who would play Vanity, Apollonia, Jill Jones, Mayte and Sheila E.
nothing more beautiful than a mother who takes that responsibility like a champion...obviously women are more than mothers etc...no lectures needed...I just find it to be the most crucial job for our society.....always rough patches that kids go through, when you have a mother like Susannah eventually they become well adjusted adults...so refreshing to see the love she has for her kids
Warner Brothers should remaster Under The Cherry Move and release it in color. That would be something cool and different. They should also remaster all of Prince's side projects and release them in a box set. I would totally buy that.

Love Susannah and her Sister Wendy. I know someone they know from their childhood. All the stories about her Dad's life is true. She still can see vividly how Prince romanced her back in the day. It must be something dear for her. Because, whenever she tells the story. She repeats it verbatim. This is the second tie I heard her tell the studio advance he made to her. She tells it the same. Looking forward to part 2. What's interesting what happen back in 1983 in her life. Prince was on the cusp of a major career boost into stardom. Purple Rain was in the making. All that happened while he was working all the time.
This is needed, glad to see Prince's people coming out to Prince's legacy

-this was a fantastic episode I enjoyed the stories and interview with Susannah. The pictures she added just made the whole experience so awesome. The conversation about parenting was also very interesting. I would very very highly recommend that Susannah put out some type of book about her fascinating life story, experience in the music business, being a twin and time around Prince.

Nah. There relationship had fizzled out in good terms in 1982 - 1983.
The song is about being abandoned by a woman that reminds him of his mother.
Vanity had the same wild personality as Mattie, his mother. It fits into the original storyline of Purple Rain the movie.

The inspiration for When Doves Cry is opinion only. On the 25th anniversary DVD for Purple Rain, Albert Magnoli states that he went to Prince and requested a song specifically for the montage scene in the film - where Prince is riding around the city on his motorcycle after the conflicts with his band, Appollonia and The Time. He said Prince brought him the finished song the next day. This was March of '84. Vanity had been gone for almost a full year by then. Susan M had stopped her intimate relationship with Prince long before this time per accounts by people in the camp. So this song really could have been crafted for the scene in the film.

The most amazing thing about Prince the women he dated, was the ability to have them all in the same room while they were seeing each other with very little drama. He legit used to have them all around each other all the time during every era. There is that TV special with Nona Gaye, Mayte and Carmen Electra all on the SAME SHOW :O

A great guy? Had multiples of women at the same time. C'mon. If this was anyone else we'd be yelling, "DOG!" He dumped Susannah right when he got rid of the Revolution. There was no great love story here.
@@ladyday9578 AGAIN.....he did NOT dump Susannah after the Revolution ended. She stayed in MN until end of November and then packed up her stuff and moved back to LA. SHE left Prince. Then, he moved out to his rental in LA and spent 2+ months trying to get her to return to MN with him. Then, he flew her over to Europe to be with him during the SOTT tour. She was also at his debut PP show for New Year's 1987. She was also back on stage w/ him (along with W & L) in MN in '88 for his LoveSexy show. And on and on and on. They were off and on for years after the Revolution broke up.

Perhaps "hot" or "seductive" is a better description than beautiful :) I would describe it as a physically beautiful and mysterious man seducing a young woman :D Sign me up!!
Also.....Alan Leeds stated that when he joined the camp at the end of the 1999 tour it was clear to him that Prince's relationship with Vanity was done. However, he was still sleeping with Jill J. I think from Susannah's perspective it was beautiful, because she had no idea what was going on with him in MN.

Reese robinson: It's not out of the realm of possibility that she gave him some lyrical ideas during their conversations. There are tons of accounts by his associates of him taking pieces of their conversations and/or personal stories and writing songs about it. That's what Prince did. His songs were literally his life experiences with the people around him. Listen to Ruth Arzate's story about telling her friend it was so cold in MN that her nipples could cut glass. She said the next day Prince recorded a song called "Glass Cutter" :D Prince even stated, "If you want to know about my life just listen to my songs."

@@reginafris6822 I don't think Lisa was paying any attention to Prince and the harem. She was focused on being in his band and stayed out of the girl drama. Also, I think I read that Lisa and Wendy didn't know about Prince pursuing Susannah until the 1st Avenue show, which was months after he had started with her. Vanity was gone by then and Jill J wouldn't have been around Susannah.

Unfortunately Denise Matthews is no longer with us to discuss the accusatory insinuations of âhairy eyeballsâ so as to state her side of the story. Neither is Kim Upshire. Susan Moonsie, even Brenda Bennet could possibly set records straight, perhaps offer insight into the appearance of The Melvoins in the Prince camp and what that ushered in. Was Apollonia treated the same way by the existing Prince camp? Not directors but other associated artists, band members? I highly doubt it.
Troubling even more is the suggestion that Prince was an unsophisticated low IQ pop culture only consuming one dimensional gullible person who was into TV rather than education to get his education. Letâs add this to he statements on Prince being âhigh on the spectrumâ and emotionally immature.
Sadly, Prince isnât with us anymore to to verify, confirm these stories or counter them not in defense but in setting the record straight.
As for the âfat storiesâ, well, in the context of that time, not only career, but society, culture, Prince was building an empire. He was on the cusp of crossing over into a wider audience into one household name he had to make sure that his image was in line to compete with other acts. And keep up. No is there anything wrong with exceptionalism like that, thatâs what made Prince a success because he applied the same disciplinary self-esteem to himself and expected it of others.
I think he was being disciplined and making sure his associated artists were the top of their game and looked fantastic. Look at Apollonia, sheâs still dressed to the nines and looks fabulous! Miss Starfish & Coffee comes in looking like she went from shopping at Erewhon straight to the Studio 6!
Weâve gone, as a mainstream culture, from looking great, having pride, to being and celebrating looking like slobs.

Thanks for sharing. Prince loved foreplay, you can tell by his lyrics. That's why he waited until she (being many) was finished with the project before he had sex with her. Because he loved the flirting, he knew if they had sex before the project was finished, she wouldn't look at him with lustful eyes afterwards, Because he would act like nothing happened the next day, after he got what he wanted. Their were exceptions like Susannah, I think they really loved each other dearly. It was his fault for sure that they didn't work out. I wish prince could of found his forever girl. He did deserve one. So you're saying "wonderful Ass " was about Vanity?
@@Modernaire Yes it was definitely about Vanity and he even said that they loved each other deeply, I think and this is my personal opinion that a lot of his music was based off of his love for Vanity
@@sharakanelson6965 Agreed. Convinced a lot of his early catalogue is inspired by Vanity. Just read "Strange Relationship" was about Vanity, released on SOTT. One of his first loves, a prototype that he was obsessed with, couldn't control and never make work.
sa a: Yes, Jill J confirmed that Prince wrote Wonderful Ass for Vanity. Not really a love song if you listen to the lyrics. They are pretty harsh. He's basically saying that he stays with her because of her "wonderful ass". Strange Relationship is most likely for her too, based on the initial tracking for the song. Supposedly, Vanity said to him at some point that they had a strange relationship.

SR was never slotted for ATWIAD. Yes, Prince often recycled songs for his latest album. W&L were part of MANY songs during the '84-'86 period. Look up the Dream Factory project. The Crystal Ball project was huge and mainly featured W&L and Susannah. The SOTT album was definitely a reflection of his relationship with Susannah. She was the first person thanked in the liner notes. Listen to In This Bed I Scream which Prince wrote for and dedicated to W, L, & S. They were important to his life and music.

Prince didn't want to give W&L the $$ and fair credit for their contributions. They spoke up and he fired them - same story with many of Prince's associates. Dream Factory and Crystal Ball were a complete 180 from Prince's trajectory up to that point. He was bringing new instruments and stronger lyrics into the mix. A completely different vibe than the more rock/funk based style he had been doing. The music was obviously important enough to Prince for him to release the Crystal Ball album in '98 which included many songs from that period, including the title track which was Prince w/ Susannah's vocals.
The SOTT record was literally a pared down version of the Crystal Ball record. Prince picked some songs he had done on his own and songs he had already recorded with The Revolution or Wendy, Lisa and Susannah. Cat Glover stated that the SOTT band just had to learn the songs - they had already been recorded in '85-'86. Yes, it was a reflection of Prince's growth....WITH The Revolution. Go back and listen to In This Bed I Scream which Prince wrote in '96. It clearly explains how important W, L, & S were to him and his music. Sometime prior to his passing Prince hand wrote a list of people who had inspired him during his career. Someone had posted it on FB. W, L, & S were all on that list. Also, when Prince won the AMA Lifetime Achievement award the first 3 people he thanked were Wendy, Susannah and Lisa.
Engineers wanting to be Prince??? Nah, they devoted their lives to him 24/7. Susan Rogers was the one who set up and organized his vault from '83-'87. Subsequent Engineers continued what she started. They were music lovers who supported Prince's music in every way. Prince also confided in them from time to time. Hans Martin-Buff, his Engineer in the late 90's stated Prince told him some very private things that he will take to his grave.
