We had the absolute perfect opportunity last night to cement our credentials. A no.2 spot beckoning. Great teams just go out and do the business. With Gawn and Petracca missing it should have been a hard day in the office but a sign off! Alas ....
Forget wet weather, good teams know how to play those conditions.

Yes we beat the pies but let's not forget they weren't fielding there best 22 players due to a lot of injuries! 😔

Wright has been scared of the ball since he was suspended and Draper is taking the piss . Move these 2 on while they have some currency.

Another great video guys! I tend to write a fair bit on these, but I'll keep it to one main new observation that is now becoming a concern of mine for our future: Where is Draper's development? From VFL days to AFL, sure. But he is no further from a crash and bash goof than he was in his debut game. Melbourne knew he has zero ruck craft so we didn't even hold the advantage in the ruck everyone assumed. Like you said, Draper is unpredictable and refuses to ever just palm down to his mids. Apart from that, classic Essendon not playing wet weather footy.

@@absolutelyessendon If we finish the season out of the finals with significant losses then I’ll likely swing onto your side. That has happened yet.
Losses happen. It’s a two horse race. It’s the manner in which we lose that is under discussion. The manner in which we lose hasn’t significantly been called into question yet in my estimation. The Port loss was a bad week, but we responded and didn’t lose again until about round 9 or 10 from memory. And I’d say our Melbourne loss was our worst for the year. A real shocker of a performance that calls for a big response this week.
The fact that it could be argued that “we blew it against Carlton”, bodes well for what we’re putting together and there was clear trends in that game and the Geelong game that suggest we’ve progressed along further in comparison to 2023.
My argument is strengthened by looking at the wins we have had. We were rank underdogs in 7 of our first 9 games. Yet we went into round ten, 6.5 and 2.
We’ve set up our season with the next month turning 3 games at Marvel and one at the MCG.
Yes, I winced at the Melbourne loss and as an Essendon supporter I agree such losses remind us more readily of our decades long frailty.
But we still have to be awake to the trends that have been present throughout the season. I’m not going to mumble through them now, but in my view, there’s been significant progression in our game style and the general buy in from players, that I will continue to remain optimistic about until I see it collapse.
In season 2024, that collapse hasn’t happened yet.

I now officially have ZERO faith, and even less trust, in our side. This week was the test, not last week, and we failed miserably.
The way we work so hard for our goals, 10 mins of hard fought buildup, only to let the opposition score so easily within 30 secs of the next bounce...so often. Shocking. Must be so disheartening as a player.
The forward line is dysfunctional, but to be fair I dont think they're getting good entries from the mids. Bomb it in long and we get beaten every single time, in the air and on the ground. Imagine that.
We need a shake up. Nobody's spot should be sacred. IMO...Perkins, out. Wright, out. Cox, out. Jones is right on the edge.

Capable of making game-breaking kicks and we let him walk. Roberts is super by foot and an assured decision maker. Back the youth now.

    Hi Smokin & DT
This was our chance gone begging , with Gawn and Petracca missing .
    Excuse my spelling ….
We picked the wrong side for wet weather , in my view too many talls and not enough smalls .
We should have learnt from the Geelong game , but I don’t understand , wet weather footy , kick long , kick along the ground , no backwards and sideways , and hand balling TOO much in the wet .
We could have secured second spot .
I don’t understand why the coaching team are telling players to kick to pockets , not long and direct , I saw stringer pass from 40 m out rather than shoot at goal in front like the old stringer .
Last week I said , bring in Setterfield , and last week I said bring in Hobbs , and drop Perkins back in two s , and again I do believe Wright has lost his way since the suspension .
I agree Davies would have been perfect to be brought in .
The boys looked flat as a tack , but the over possession was so frustrating I had to leave 10 mins into the last quarter , not hard to kick long to the talls like peter Wright and he can tap it down to the smalls like the old days , Salmon to Mercuri , Bewick , Ezard ,Calthorpe , leon Baker , daisy Williams , how about Gary Moorcroft 😂
How about giving Gavin’s son Tex Wanganeen having a go in the wet ??
I agree with Smokin , you should stay to the end of the game but I was embarrassed that’s why I left ……
I was the one to raise Bewick last week , and I agree D Ambrosio should have been kept and let him grow after he kicked the winner vs North last year .
I have an original 80 s retro bombers jacket from my wife’s uncle , great memorabilia , correct DT !
Great job boys very honest , and telling it like it is , as I said last week , do a live pregame show , Dockers game perhaps ?
DT you said where did Napoleon go wrong ….. when he left Josephine his strongest supporter , follower , his wife .
Where did Essendon go wrong ….. not spending on recruiting dropped to fourth bottom and below on the ladder , and all the old people going in 2005 onwards ….. Harvey , kevin Morrison , etc etc Kevin Sheedy ….. not a lot of success since then …….
    Signing off

Thanks for the review. Once again, DT, your thoughts echo my own.
As I mentioned in comments in previous videos, big Pete hasn't been good for a long time (in my opinion years). I'm still very annoyed at the large contract he was awarded. He can't mark or crash packs. He can't always have it delivered on platter.
    My thoughts on the match:
    - Too tall
    - Skills seem poor (e.g. fumbly and panic)
    - Scott is destroying Martins career in the backline. Amazing the difference when he goes forward.
    - Draper is not improving which is concerning. He doesnt appear to have ruck craft.
    - Backline was fairly solid, except for Heppell (why on earth Laverde was "managed" is bizarre).
    - Midfield was ok. But they seemed second to the ball all the time for some reason. Draper just seems to knock the ball anywhere though, including straight to the opposition.
    - Forward line disfunctional, particularly no pressure or defense. With the amount of forward entries, they should be able to convert at least some of them.
The following should be dropped for a stint in VFL: Cox, Perkins, Wright and Heppell.
Agree with DT. I know exactly what will happen this week: They beat a weaker side in the Crows, at Marvel and Wright will kick 3 goals on weak opposition. Always the same.

Even if we kicked the ball long into our forward line we had no players to compete. Draper just knocked the ball forward to Melbourne players. I said months ago that Wright is a liability and last night Scott realised it too. I think he will be managed this week. Cox, Gresham and Perkins should join him. I've been fortunate to see Essendon win 4 premierships. We had players that played for the jumper, gave it their all for 2 hours. I'll celebrate the wins and nothing more. Someone of Wright's physical size are used by up the ground players to 'hit' - and a goal to be kicked. Yet Wright simply has NOT either been consistent [ok injuries I get it] nor has he - for his sheer size - 'imposed himself' physically on marking contests on a consistent basis. We should drop Perkins and get Tsatas or Hobbs. Draper was ok, but hes not talking to our mids, he should dictate where hes tappig and then the mids move there instead of him thumping the ball in random direction to opposition players. Wright needs to go back to the VFL, the forward line just isnt working and i wouldnt mind langford going to the VFL (call it managed) and Martin being in the forward line, bring laverde back into the side in the backline.

I think we have decided to go for draft picks so we can use them and future ones to trade for Harley reid. End in the middle 6 and get a similar draw next year, except not play port in the bullshit round. We play 3 above us on the ladder which we lose, 3 below us, probably lose one, maybe 2. Then we end on 11 or 12 wins (no better than where we finished the last 3 seasons worsfold coached) and get a top 10 pick. Won't get top 4, pointless making finals. Pity cause if Sydney stumble, there are 6 or 7 teams that could win the flag, if they get top 4. Now that we are playing to get ready for next year, stop playing players that are going to be delisted at the end of the year, like Goldstein and heppell. Experiment with Roberts, Hobbs, maybe see how we go with Bryan and draper in the same team without Wright. Maybe try wanganeen in the back pocket, before we delist him, maybe it could work

@@bernierossi8062 yeah mate it's called the Essendon finals curse. We have been living the experience for many moons now as supporters and it starts wearing thin. The remedy is simple, go out and play each game as a collective 22 with some heart and competitive edge. I never thought Melbourne would've ran laps around us and exposed us like they did. If we show up to Marvel this Friday night against Adelaide with the lack of enthusiasm, it could be a long night for the boys and another season with missed opportunities. Sometimes the selectors have to make tough love calls on the team so to speak. Waiting for players to find form and costing us games due to poor decision making and lack of ticker in the contest needs to change. Several VFL players would've been much better selected in the way against both Geelong and Melbourne but yet again we adopted a talk forward line. When I served in the military (Infantry) only the strong survived the rigours so to speak. I believe the same theory applies to selecting our best 22 for each game.
