I love how she says to your university that you're not "ready to be a student-teacher"... like excuse me Miss teacher mentor, aren't you supposed to be teaching your student teacher and supporting her, lifting her self-esteem and confidence... I never understood why people take on leadership roles if they can't be caring and supportive leaders.

This reminds me of the navy where on the job training is basically no training at all because your fat, lazy chief who’s getting out in a year to collect his pension can’t be bothered to show you how to do anything more than once. And as we all know, once over lightly doesn’t cut the mustard. That’s how you turn sailors into either civilians or perhaps at best merchant seamen who belong to a union and jump ship to go back to the hiring hall to find a better ship.

You're brave to rake over all this. Cooperating teachers are in a position of power where they can bully and take out their issues on the student teachers. I think this happens quite a bit.

Honestly, it was kinda therapeutic to speak my truth. When I was living the experience, I was very tight lipped. I absolutely did not want my complaints or concerns to travel far. I was not intrested in having a bad reputation. Now that I am more ~established~ I fee secure in who I am as a teacher and I want to support others through their experience!

Oh my gosh our stories are SOOOOOO SIMILAR! I was student teaching while my dad died on top of it and I felt like I got zero sympathy. I keep getting told that I'm "difficult to work with" and I "don't take direction"--which I don't understand because I do everything they tell me to.

I had the student teaching experience from hell. If I ever get into content creation I might make my own video about it because it was WILD. Yours kind of sounds like mine. I withdrew from that placement and went to another school. It was the right choice. Honestly I think some teachers just decide you don’t fit their mold and then take it out on you. It’s not right. But I’m glad you got through it.
If anyone else is going through a rough student teaching experience right now, don’t let them bully you. Don’t let them make you believe you can’t do it. You can. You’re there to learn. Ironically they just don’t want to take the time to actually teach.

My cooperating teacher told me her Student teaching was a horrible experience and so she wanted to make sure mine wasn't like that! We are teachers. We all started at the same point! We all teach differently and we should help and support each other ❤

Yes. I had a horrible teaching experience. I ended up withdrawing for student teaching or else I was going to fail. When I got my evaluation back and I basically failed. Everything was in the not evident column. My partner teachers basically said that I was incompetent and that because I was shy this was going to be harder for me. When my field supervisor saw my evaluation she was pissed. I have one more try at student teaching but I'm not sure if I will be going back. It was so awful. I basically have no skills to run a classroom.

I am so sorry to hear about your experience. As you heard, I was in a similar boat and we both know that this experience will share your outlook on teaching and could change your career derogatory. I say give the experience one more try and make sure you can switch cooperating teachers and schools. Shyness does not equal a bad teacher. You will grow over time as a teacher. No one is "good at teaching" when they first start. All my mentors said they did not feel like a good teacher until year 5! Yikes... have a while to go. BUT one bad experience can not and should not ruin your dreams. Also, classroom management is typically not taught in teacher prep programs! That all comes from years of experience. Are you Student Teaching during covid? Have any questions I might be able to provide support to?

@@SocialStudies401 Hey thanks for replying. I didn't see you reply because youtube didn't notify me. Yes I was student teaching during covid. During my student teaching I found lesson planning, assessing and incorporating differentiating into my lesson planning brutal. When I would ask my partner teachers for help all they would say is just "google it". They were useless and made for an awful experience. Even up here in Canada teacher prep programs don't teach about classroom management or even how to teach.

Your Cooperating Teacher reminds me of my Site Coordinator. I took a mental health day on Friday due to a very stressful situation in my school placement (my first time taking a mental health day) and was essentially told that that was unprofessional of me to do. She advised me to drop out of student teaching, because she "you can't take a day off like that when you're teaching" and "nobody will hire you if that's how you react to things, they'll see you as being unreliable".

I for one will be taking a mental health/sick day this month to catch up on my graduate school classes for my masters. I have a paper due at the end of the month. Teachers do take mental health days all the time, they are built into your contract. This is my third year teaching full-time... Easier said than done, but brush that comment off. Stick with it! You can do this!

You’re not the asshole. Teachers hate on student teachers all the time. I remember when I was an aide they’d call them “the lazy clinical teachers”. You get treated differently based on what role you are in a school unfortunately. I have been it all. Aide, sub, students teacher and now teacher.
Student teachers get treated the worst next subs, next aides, and then finally teachers are the most respected and listened to.

My student teaching experience was awful. My CoOp hated their job - they told me every week that they hated the kids, hated the job, and couldn’t wait to retire. They also just got tenured that year. They also disappeared for hours at a time - to sleep. They complained about my university, constantly said they taught us “bullshit”, and also said nasty comments about my university mentors who came to observe.
The department members also made racist and sexist comments about the students - and complained about each other when the other person wasn’t in the room. Overall very toxic - I ended up getting a different placement and had a much better experience.

First and foremost, I am sorry your student teaching journey started off that way. I am glad you were able to switch placements. Who you CoOp is makes all the difference! I am interested in how many years she’s been teaching in order to just be receiving tenure? At my Uni, your mentor had to already be tenured and have more then 5+ years of teaching experience.

Omg girl! Same! I had such a bad experience in the beginning I cried so much and I was given a score of 1 out 4 (For the first half of student teaching.) My supervisor who would observe me was like “Why is your mentor giving you 1s when as i’m observing your scoring higher”. My mentor even said she couldn’t sleep and was so worried I wouldn’t fulfill the role as full time student teaching. Fortunately, my mentor did not take her personal life on me anymore, still worked with me and I got through my full weeks of teaching. Now everything is going great but it was a rough start.

On the plus side, you are not only learning from your CT but also from your peer. That's a unique experience. The advice I heard for Hybrid or DL Student Teachers is to offer after-hours zoom tutoring or "office hours" in lieu of after-school activities you might have done when covid was not affecting us. I know I would LOVE to have a student-teacher help me out with this job. Could be a way to set yourself apart from the other Student-Teacher OR partner with them! Still, your idea shining through.

This is so refreshing to hear. I also had a horrible student teaching experience, but for a different reason.
My specialization was in secondary math, so naturally, I was placed in a high school.
I was placed under the department head who had never had a student teacher before. Early on, we had a good relationship, but not too long after taking over, my teaching style was drastically different from my mentor. She was constantly negative about this. She babied the kids and they walked over her. I was much more direct and straightforward than she was.
I was begging my university rep to change schools. I’m so glad it’s over. Teaching my own way is so much better.

I would argue an established teacher (CT) taking on a student-teacher for the first time has to face just as much of a learning curve as we do (pre-service teachers). There is a reason why "adult education" is its own coursework area! Hopefully, both you and your CT gained some insight. Glad you are doing well now! I am sure your teaching style is appreciated. :)

I was cringing watching this video. I did my student teaching in the 4th grade in Washington DC and my experience was awesome! My cooperating teacher was fantastic, very supportive, and gave me so many amazing ideas. She and I are friends to this day and she still gives me great advice. I now teach 3rd grade, I have had 4 student teachers of my own, and I always treat them with the same optimism and openness that my cooperating teacher treated me. A friend of mine had a similar student teaching experience as you did, and she likened it to feeling like a caged rat. There was nothing she could do to get out of it and she just had to take the daily abuse. This woman had 4.0 GPA, she was in Teach For America her first year out of college, and she is one of the best teachers I've ever worked with. I know this isn’t the most constructive comment, but man, sometimes shit just sucks and you grow from the experience. With me I learned about how to approach the profession better and communicate with my teaching peers. As long as you don’t bash people and stay positive you can’t go wrong. It’s all almost over. Maybe see if you can get your Principal to observe you? Ask as a favor to get someone else’s feedback to grow? Win the Principal over that way and try to “prove” yourself to them. Their validation isn’t everything in the end your relationships are between, you, the CT, and students. Other schools will want you as well…. People are leaving the profession in droves. You’ll have a job!

SO many problems in education, from beginning to end. I had lot's of experience with staff that if you did something better than they did they didn't like you so much anymore. Especially if the students seemed to like you more. It cost me a lot of money and eventually my home. The biggest mistake of my life!

Relatable. When a teacher because is super laissez-faire and easy going kids tend to “like” that but if not done well, that can really get more stern teachers riled up. It’s a balancing game. Yes it is good to be likable but that’s not the goal of being a teacher.

I also had a negative student teaching experience in a high school English placement. I found out, through conversations with my cooperating teacher and with the students, that he wanted a student teacher that term because he had just found out about some health issues and knew he'd be out a lot of the time to deal with them. He wanted a student teacher so he wouldn't have to write up sub plans, so I pretty much didn't have a mentor teacher 50% of the time. After a few days acting as his sub I did get sub pay for every day after, which as a bonus. When he was there, he was super condescending and rather than helping, his feedback undermined my confidence. Luckily, I had had a wonderful middle school student teaching placement prior to this, so I knew what teaching could be and didn't let this experience deter me. 17 years later, still going strong!

I went through two experiences ‘cause our student teaching was only a semester long- the first one we only had to go two days a week, and then in you’re graduating semester you’re supposed to go every day. The first one for me was second grade and it went fairly well. When I interned for first grade I definitely hit a rough patch with the teachers ‘cause they weren’t satisfied with how much work I was doing. To be honest I definitely wasn’t as into it as I could be since I wasn’t in the best space mentally, but usually I had good days- they mostly liked my lessons and how I could get the kids to engage with me. It only really turned sour-ish when I got an email from my university supervisor that my co-teacher was concerned about my performance since one of the things I routinely did was ask her how I could improve. Like, there was a point where I was at risk of being thrown out of the program. I got through it, though. I didn’t like that it happened to me but I can recognize that I probably deserved that intervention. I don’t think you deserved yours, though. That lady was being difficult just ‘cause she could.

Relatable! It’s such a fine line student teaching! You have to be confident in yourself and build confidence, but you can’t be cocky or not ask for improvements. Your a student teacher for a reason- a learning experience. It’s kind of weird a mentor teacher would just expect you to be great from day one. Takes years to build that. Going in year 4 and I have so much growth to do yet all my evals are maxed out at “highly effective.” Glad your made it through and hope everything is going well as a classroom teacher :)

You just need to know how to best support ELL learners. Focus on making your lesson understandable. Think “comprehensible input” (ZPD) and the components of a good SIOP lesson plan. Focus on clarity and accommodations not modifications. YOU GOT THIS! Make meeting the grade level standards achievable with out changing the grade-level standards/expectations.

Geeeez! I was older when I went through student teaching. During that time, my brother died of brain cancer, my mom developed pneumonia-recovered and then had heart surgery. If we missed any days, we had to make them up. I would go to the restroom and break down. I was older and the mom of six sons-crying in the restroom! The classroom was disorganized and a mess. The teacher had an assistant who screamed at the children all day long. When I had an observation by the principal, she would show up 20 minutes late and then report that I did not introduce the lesson properly. I wrote a scathing response to her “observation”. I wanted to walk away several times. It was truly awful. This is my 18th year teaching and my last. I’ve had some really good years and created some wonderful relationships, but would I choose this path again? No. There is a huge teacher shortage and the number of students graduating with a degree in education is less and less every year.
I still get a little upset when I think back to my early days. I was an older adult then but was treated like I was stupid. I wish it had stood up for me self a little better. The school administration loves teachers who are basically smiling bobble heads-just do what you are told and smile. Unfortunately they are not privy to teacher conversations after their meetings, etc. I have not heard one teacher say “I love teaching”. Not one. Most are looking at other jobs or hanging in there until retirement. Sad.

Your comment really resonated with me. I don’t know what type of district you’re in, but I am an urban setting. I don’t know anyone that sincerely wants to be teaching in my school/district. The first school I was at (same district), the principal would bully teachers out of their position if they stood up for themselves or went against any of her directives. The behavior I’m talking about does not align with being Insubordinate more just questioning authority for answers/change. The teacher turnover is insane.
You’re right a lot of admin just want “yes men” around them and once you stop signing up for every afterschool club, program, meeting, committee you’re no longer of value. Move on to a younger teacher who’ll say yes to everything because they don’t know how to set work-life boundaries yet and feel as if they need to be Superman. Then teach burn out hits and they cycle continues.

I can’t imagine anyone having a good student teaching experience anymore frankly. The concept that you can lecture large groups of unfiltered kids without cherry picking who you want to a teach like in some exclusive private academy anymore today strains credulity. Society has gotten to the point where any public contact job where you’re dealing with people other than trained employees is at best a fairly grotesque concept. The emerging go to concept for public schooling is going to trend inevitably towards something along the lines of brick & mortar online academy. Then even further down the road it will be privatized brick & mortar online academy. The kids are all addicted to their screens, the screens have won, and anyone who’s not inside their screens has lost all credibility. The teachers will disappear to be replaced by a combination of daycare workers and tutors, all permanently locked in at the bottom of the pay scale. If they don’t like that and want to quit they’ll simply be replaced by new hires, kind of like at any day care center because in the final analysis schooling is daycare so the mommies can all work to pay for their SUVs.

Next time , just ask the teacher what they do that works for their students or ask the students what works for them because along with lesson planning comes the management of the students too and the key to it all is teaching the content into the student in a way that the student can understand well .

News websites like “All Sides” allow my student to read legitimate news articles with central/left/right leaning perspectives and come to their own conclusions. Another example is during election seasons, my student use resources like “I Side With” website to find out what candidate alines most closely with their political views while removing party recognition bias.
