Legs & Co - Sue Menhenick Interview - TOTP [Story of 1981] TX: 08/01/2016

  • The year the teens take over and 80s 'new pop' is born with Depeche Mode, the teen-fronted Human League, Kim Wilde and Duran Duran all debuting, while Ultravox and Visage master the art of pop videos. The show embraces the shift with a new theme tune and titles and, as Legs and Co leave, invite a swathe of club kids and cheerleaders in to create a permanent 80s party atmosphere. Britain is torn between rioting, unemployment and the royal wedding, a mood captured in the Specials' Ghost Town, which the band perform on Top of the Pops, and then promptly split up in their dressing room at Television Centre.

      She was always my fave, as a young adolescent.
      And yes, she does still look great (or did in 2016). I'm sure hasn't changed that much in 5 years.
      - I still could!!!

      I totally agree with you. I was 14 years old in 1977 and totally in love with Sue. Thursday Night when TOTP was on telly was the only night I didn't see my girlfriend. @@antonystringfellow5152

    Last performance to the Birdy song, that really was a sad farewell.
    I didn't know anyone who thought that Zoo and a studio full of posers was an improvement.
    Thankfully, Music videos were the new thing and shows like the Tube came along.
    Totp's slow death began here, a shame really, when the Eighties had so much great music to offer.

      Couldn't agree more!
      I stopped watching the video at the transition. That's when the program died for me.

      Sue was a top dancer on the show along with another couple of girls. But Sue was unique in that she participated in 3 of TOTPs dance groups: Pans People, Ruby Flipper, and eventually Legs & Co.

  • @002DrEvil

    I don't see the point in complaining that people are watching Legs & Co's performance in the studio, when millions of people will be watching it at home anyway. I would imagine the choreographer would have come up with the costumes. I can't imagine Top of the Pops telling them what they should wear.

    • @78a67h
      @78a67h Před 10 měsíci +1

      Yes Flick devised the choreography and the costumes. Flick, a dancer herself, did a great job of either, considering the very short time she often had to work in. Accusations that L & Co were led to be depravely provocative was nonsense. They managed themselves as professionals and only did what they themselves wanted to do. The fact that they were sexy at the same time was to their added advantage.

    When I Look Back at those days emoji is gone buy I was in the Prime of my life a young man with not a clue but the best thing on a Thursday night with watching top of pops and watching legs and co do their best as young man you could knew you would never meet them in the flash unless you were lucky to be on Top of the Pops but the funny thing is you always went out with girls who look like them without thinking Top of the Pops let us all out to dress and had to dance or to do better realistically everybody is a show-off and loves to party in those days everybody was happy and look forward to the Friday night Saturday night out partying life seemed easier and simple then where did it all go wrong at least I have got some happy memories I'm having forgotten the good times thanks to legs and co on Top of the Pops xxxxxxxxxx

    I all ways thought sue was a happy smiley person ,and I know some of us go through trials and tortures,and experiences bad +good .but I get a very strong feeling that she as been, or is going through some kind of unhappy episode , its just the look and to me she appears very different to when she seemed that happy relaxed sexy dancer

    • @rabele123
      @rabele123 Před 6 lety +3

      terence barrett Sue was my favourite. I'm sure I read somewhere that she had some kind of painful joint condition and she was always battling this to keep on dancing. If this is so, I wonder if it got the better of her eventually?

    What horrible down-grade from Pans People, Ruby Flipper, and Legs & Co. People just seem to have ran out of taste and style by 1981.
