Outro: Ravel - Ondine (Gaspard de la nuit)
Hello, I'm Rousseau, I make piano covers of classical and pop songs with a reactive visualizer. New videos every Monday and Thursday!
#Rousseau #Piano #PianoCover
Scarbo. Gaspard de la nuit. Ravel. One of the most important works of the 20th century, and no other I'd have as the debut Ravel piece on the channel. Some of you may remember the commentary I wrote on the 'Top 10' video, this piece was named in the "actual Top 10" and is truly (with the rest of the suite) one of the most demanding piano works of all time, both musically and technically. Although Halloween has just passed, this piece is like a horror movie in piano form, almost like the musical encapsulation of a nightmare! With this one we also welcome M.I. to the channel - there are quite a few special videos coming soon. I hope the start of your November has been great so far, and see you next week â„
How many pianists do you have on the channel?
They have accepted me on piano lessons in my local music school so now I can say I am offically learning to play the piano.
There are way better Ravel pieces than this.
What does ravel mean?
Seems like you have a humongous competitor... within Rousseau!!!

Not sure if you've heard any of Ravel's other works but I strongly recommend giving him a listen. He's often compared to his contemporary Debussy and while I'm sure he's of significant influence, Ravel definitely offers a more structured sound (as he himself would've proclaimed [according to some source that escapes memory]). I'd consider him one of my favorite composers for sure.

Amphetamines combined with psychedelics most likely.
For those of you who don't know, here's the accompanying poem that this piece was based on.
by Aloysius Brandt,
SCARBO, dedicated to Rudolph Ganz
I have heard him and seen him again and again, Scarbo the Dwarf. In the dead of night, when the moon was a silver mask on a dark wall, the stars a swarm of bees with stings of pircing light; heard his laugh in a dark corner, and the grate of his nails on the counterpane. I've seen him drop from the ceiling, twirl and roll across the floor like a spindle dropped by a dark enchantress at her wheel. Did I think he had vanished? No. He rose up between me and the moon, high and narrow as a Gothic steeple, a great bell swaying in his head. And then his form utterly changed?now blue and transparent as candlewax, his face as pale as the molten drippings?and into the dark he's gone...
Is this the full poem
Interesting, this sound like the description of a night terror!
Reading this dramatically enhances the experience of listening to the piece. Same with the whole suite, really.
Make sense
the poem is beautiful but it took mme a solid minute to compose (haha get it?) myself after reading "SCARBO THE DWARF".

This sounds alot what anxiety would sound like if it's made into music
If you read the poems that Ravel based this off of you may understand why the entirety Gaspard de la Nuit sounds the way it does
That is why the time period following this piece was called the Age of Anxiety. During the time of 2 World Wars and the largest economic depression ever, meaning and purpose were lost in peoples' everyday lives. His work became even more important during that time. Look up the philosophy of existentialism.

Imagine the GORE of a sheet music of this piece! đ±
Search the "Schmitt Music Memorial" in Minneapolis - the sheet music is painted on to the side of the building. Prince had a series of now-famous photos taken there as publicity shots for what would later gain him a Warner Brothers recording contract. I've always wondered what the piece would sound like - a frenetic and moody piece for sure.
Is so sad that some people think this is just wrong notes. We have to know that this was made on the Impressionist era, in which the extended tonality was a thing (among of Bartok, Debussy, Schoenberg and others). The harmony used is a not really complex but more than usual for sure in what I call a âRomantic earâ. Btw, is a pleasure that a Channel of this category uploaded on movement of this delightful masterpiece. Thanks a lot Rousseau!
Wait, people actually thought that? Wrong notes I mean.

Rousseau, you made me love Mondays again.

Should be a warning with this video, DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!...
It's great to see a more obscure piece (obscure to the general population) tackled, and great musical poetry throughout. A true piano masterpiece by Ravel, although I think these more poetic/abstract complex advanced works require a more refined ear to appreciate and enjoy, something I feel for the majority of listeners comes only with age and maturity. It starts with stuff like fur elise and HR2 I guess, easier on the ear with more prominent themes.
Mark Fowler Definitely. I see a lot of people confused by this piece and I felt exactly the same when I first heard it. Would really like for Rosseau to post some more Ravel, particularly some that is more approachable for less refined ears - this piece is far more intense and mysterious than almost everything Ravel wrote.
I disagree about acquiring a more refined ear with age and maturity. I think itâs just what your interests are, and oneâs appreciation towards music and acquiring that refined ear. That being said, I totally agree with Ravel needing a more refined ear. Debussy too, whom is my favorite, has quite a bit of dissonance at times as well. Both composers and their music are brilliant to say the least!
What does refine ears mean?
@@lunagabriella5162 it's when your ears are habituated to music that is less accessible to the average listener, due to dissonances for example. Scarbo is really not accessible, because you must have an amount of experience to understand the piece (also knowing the story of the piece helps : this is from a poem by Aloysius Bertrand, and its about a maleficent gobelin who haunts people).
I am not mature to be honest, I am 10 years old and I love and understand this piece.
The piece that makes Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody No 2 look like twinkle twinkle little star...and you completely dominated it!

IMO no way Ravel is the greatest composer for piano when there are such composers as Chopin or Beethoven
Krzysztof Q Depends how you look at it. Ravel is completely unique to this day when it comes to piano music despite writting a relatively little amount of it.
Chantal Ward Yeah Ravel is certainly something. Iâm very jealous that you are yet to discover the world of classical music outside of the big names.
Krzysztof Q Who the greatest is is really a subjective affair. Music is an art form, and will speak to everyone in different ways. But thereâs no denying that Ravel certainly has a lot of skill (not that Iâm saying youâre denying that). Also, Iâm aware you began with âin my opinionâ.
In MY opinion, Chopin and Debussy are my favourites so far.
Is this person just a human library of all piano repertoire? I swear every video, itâs like a near perfect performance every time.
Dear god. Listen to this and then listen to most movie orchestras.
This song is incredibly dynamic in the sense that it could accompany a tense scene, which considering the poem, it essentially is. But to think we had this music before we even had silent movies makes this feel even more ahead of its time. Ravel was a genius.

Honestly, this is the thing you play right before revealing you are secretly a Vampire. What a piece. Never heard of it or seen it anywhere, thanks for showing it off.
People who don't like this piece are clearly deaf. It has a very clear motif and theme that gets repeated and it's difficulty is justified with Ravel's ability to create such contrasting sounds on the piano. I like to think that Ravel was focused much more on texture in this piece. (Not to say the a harmonies arent amazing) This has always been one of my favorite pieces to listen to, it just takes many listens to understand. Also, without context from the other two pieces that come before, some motifs can sound strange or out of place, but even still, I think the piece holds its own very well.
Well explained..
