Barncaster guitar build - Free Reclaimed Lumber! (From the side of the highway)

  • I built this barncaster for a client who wanted something that looked old and distressed. I used a piece of pine I found on the side of the road while I was stuck in traffic on the way home from work.

      Definitely, strategic placement of dowels for extra tone. Hand touting because I’m too cheap to buy templates! Thanks!

      Yeah I replaced the dowels on my guitar with tonal dowels.Best decision I ever made.

    Awesome build! I LOVE❤️ the headstock veneer! The stable where I keep my horse has an old barn they plan to take down. I want to snatch some planks and do the same. Thanks for the inspiration!

      @mcitp mcitp it’s pine. It’s got humbuckers so it doesn’t sound exactly like a traditional telecaster. I think it sounds good, you can hear it in the video!

    Man I've been dreaming of a beautiful natural wood guitar for years now. Like flame maple or poplar burl. "Prestigious" woods. But I always felt that something is still missing.
    Your video was randomly recommended. I saw the thumbnail and I knew that was it. Watched the video while drooling. This simple raw, cheap, torn wood is THE thing I've been missing on every design I saw.
    Thank you for sharing this one, officially the most beautiful guitar (to my taste) I've seen. If I manage to get enough woodworking skill someday, I'll definitely make myself one on this basis

      Thanks! Thats very kind! My advice is just to get started. Don't wait. I definitely need to get better and there are things that I'm not good at but I learn more with every build!

      @@dannylewisguitars I sadly have a very busy life, no room for equipment and few time to woodwork. I already worked on a kit but that's it. Still a medium-term project !

      Thanks! Even if you don’t have all the tools I used here, I’d encourage you to give it a shot!
      You can build a body with a jig saw and a router! Or forget the router and use a chisel if you’re patient!

    Nice build Danny , nice tone also considering the scrap timber and all the guff that goes into having to use certain grades of woods . At first I thought 🤷‍♂🤷‍♂ headstock going to come apart, should not have doubted your abilty , nice veneer 👍👍👍👍

      It was a Mighty Mite neck. It was well made in general. There was a bit of a rise at the 16th-22nd frets that I had to do a lot of filing to overcome.

    This is amazing. I saw a video where a guy built a guitar from a table leaf. Now I’m hooked, where did you get the body template?

      I drew it myself! I used my Stratocaster to start and then I just erased and sketched and erased and sketched again until it look like a telecaster. Then I cut it out and used it as a template!

    I would fill in those cracks along with stabilizing them the way you did, but that is just me. I guess you want them to show. No pretense.

      The client I made it for wanted it to be rough and old. So I left them! Pretense is for suckers!

    I know this is now 15 months old, but I love this! I have a piece of barnwood that I am going to try to do something similar with. What did you use to finish the wood? I love the color of it.

    You didn't coat the inside of the pickup holes with metallic paint to prevent hum and Buzz

      It was a few months ago but I’m pretty sure I did 3-4 coats!

      @@dannylewisguitars Yeah 3 or 4 coats is usually plenty. You still want to keep the rustic look not making it too glossy. Your Reclaimed tele turned out very nice.

    What product did you use for varnish?

      I think I used zinsser shellac that I thinned with alcohol.

    What are those white blocks made out of that you used for the neck pocket?

      Just some scrap wood, they’re off cuts from our white cabinets. I think it’s just prefinished pine.

      @@dannylewisguitars nice, and you just got the necks bottom curve with a file or something? Im gonna try this next instead of a plastic routing template

      @@gnaflethegarthok3074 the pre-fab neck’s corner is about a half inch radius so it matches the half inch router bit I used! When I make my own necks I file them to the same radius that the router leaves. I hope that made sense!
