Purchased a SOG Pentagon OTF end of April. No issues whatsoever! Razor sharp. Nice weight. Solid sized firing mechanism. Really like the design, so I am going to purchase the fixed blade version as well.

  • @MarkRVillano
    @MarkRVillano Před 2 lety +35

A self-dulling knife. Ingenious! If they're going to have the blade rubbing on the way out (and in) they should have it rubbing up against some 6,000 grit material, so it sharpens itself.

I just got a lightning otf (first Otf) with a dagger blade. It self dulls the blade from slight rubbing on the upper side of the blade. I find it slightly disappointing, but it was $30.
If I had that issue on a “good” knife it would not be acceptable. That’s ridiculous.

My hopes have been high for this model. I’ve been cheering SOG for the attempt at creating an OTF with virtually no blade play. Such a sad thing that they’ve come close to doing it only to fail in other areas. I hope they can get the bugs worked out of it and make it more reliable and fix the blade dulling issue.

I just picked one up today. The blade on mine doesn't contact the inside of my handle. This has less blade play than my microtech halo 6 at less than half the price. I am a cnc machinist by profession and SOG machined these very well. I make orthopedic implants and hold very tight tolerances. This is a great dual action OTF auto.

the reason for the position of the clip is so it doesn’t sit all the way in the pocket, so its easier to get quick access. That centimeter or so makes a difference in that area. I have the kiku xr, and I always clip the clip into the mini pocket on my jeans, and tuck the rest of the handle in the pocket. Quick access is important.

Just in regards to materials - I got that fancy-pants M390 Bugout, and I immediately want to petition every knife company to offer their aluminum scales in bare metal. Aluminum anodization offers zero resistance against abrasion, and the slightest misstep ruins the entire look of the finish. Bare aluminum saves a manufacturing step, requires much less babysitting by the user, and it looks awesome.

It was the TR-4 that I'd wish I would have bought idk. My thinking is that, if I'm gonna legally carry my TR-3 with a 3.5 inch blade, might as well have got the TR-4 with the 4 inch blade plus i like the looks a tiny bit more, along with that feathered handle which my TR-3 just has this smooth grooved aluminum handle. :( So now I'm gonna sell it for a big loss. I really would like to have that knife, even if it is not legal where I live, BUT:
You are talking about some issues about the knife, starting with the bladegrind... and you say, that these are just small acceptable "faillures". On a knife of this price-range, I expect a perfect, symetric grinding and no heavy edges at the bottom. This knife is in a price-range, where we all should expect a perfect product(beside the typical weakpoints of an otf).
This knife costs nearly the price of a custom, in a quality you can also get on wish/ali/dh... and all of us customers just agree with that shit. (I also have some high-pricing knives from different brands, that are not symetricaly grinded, are a roughly fitted together, came dull like a spoon and so on...)
If this knifes would just cost up to 40/50 dollars, I would not give a f***...but anything higher priced should have a quality for that price....and most of the bigger brands do not give a shit about. We buy Spydies, Bokers,SOGs,CRKTs etc. for hundreds of dollars...and some of the cheap replicas from the mentioned plattforms have the same/better crafting-quality for a tenth of the prices. ...but no one wants to have a clone, eh?

For the most part the benchmade has worked flawlessly barring normal cleaning.
Anyways I'm done with otfs....way too much maintenance....
And I will never buy anything from microtech ever again for the rest of my life even though I probably got a dud.
They need to re-evalute their quality standards if they are pushing $350 knives.

I bought a $30 lightning OTF 5 years ago and have had zero issues with it. I’m actually pretty impressed with it for the price. Carry it almost every day and use it regularly. Haven’t done any maintenance to it. I also own a G&G Deadlock and while it’s really nice, I don’t want to use it that much because of how much it cost.

No way for me. There just no way I would pay more than a microtech ultratech for something that’s not a microtech lol

This was made to be geared towards LEO and Military wanna be Operators and Mall Cops but it’s a solid Knife and true Military are wearing Gloves 75% of the time so there’s where the Girth comes in lol. I prefer a great Fixed Blade as do all of my Brothers in “Real World Applications Abroad” great review my friend Semper Fidelis

Sog doesn't honor their warranty so bear that in mind. I'll stick with benchmade or microtech at this price point

Biggest disappointment in a long time. Bought it, wouldn't fire out of the box. Replacement took 3 MONTHS through the new company. Got it back and still the same dulling issue as everyone has reported.
