    It's a video about The Division: Survival. Not the base game. Just Survival. Please stop commenting about how much the base game sucked, I know, it's not about the base game AAHHHHH

    adding to the music section, I want to believe they wisely ignored that "silence = tense" idea.
    the soundtrack Survival has almost imitates a heartbeat depending on the situation.
    It makes us follow that rhythm and our pressure rises and lowers as the situation requires it to be.
    In your clip being used for Vandra where the Player enters and shoots from the second floor, the percussion and the light synth is, I think, represents the heartbeat in tension and the hum in your ears under stress.
    It's fucking awesome.

    • @Soliye.
      @Soliye. Před měsícem +10

      I actually really like when silence is done right, but Ubisoft was always good at making you feel those tense moments.
      For reference, just the scores that used to play at the start of a game in Rainbow Six Siege. Each map had a unique score and a unique one would play upon wining or losing.
      It was like a ticking clock, you felt you were on a timer. That "heartbeat" was also involved in that game. It's so subtle, but it sells that tension so well. Really miss that immersion... Unnoticed to most players, but it gave the game a personality. Even the winning scores had you wonder "what did we really win". Contrasts so hard with all the cheering you usually get in competitive games.

    During the lockdowns of the COVID pandemic me and my friend have bought Div1 and played like never before. The feeling of living in a pandemic ridden world irl and ingame at once added this eerie atmospheric vibe to it. I will never forget. I've never had as much fun as back then, trying to save what's left after the Dollar Flu. The details in most parts of maps were awesome. The peak of this was survival, where the isolation and randomness of the game added a hint of feeling lost to this concotion. The second one is all right, haven't hit as hard as the first. That year or a half was the best fun I've ever had in any looter shooter ever.

  • @zjaeriqsanders1731
    @zjaeriqsanders1731 Před 25 dny +9

    I remember being definitely disappointed by his game, and yet I found myself role playing more in that game than almost any other. You described it very well, that vibe Division 1 had was unmatched, especially as a lifelong New Yorker. I remember being lucky enough to visit one of the places I lived on the very limited map. It was really cool cus it was outside my level at the time but I was determined to do it anyways, enemies were scarce but I never knew when they’d show, so it was very tense as I followed my route avoiding enemies where I could. I finally had a very peaceful moment when I turned around and saw my old apartment building. Good times.
    I think what I wanted out of division was mainly just a few more survival mechanics even outside of quarantine zones, almost all buildings being fully explorable. These are important for encouraging exploration and making it feel more rewarding even if you’re not getting much loot from most buildings because you can stock up on supplies other than ammo and medkits. That plus the improvements division 2 made to abilities, endgame, and weapon/build variety would have kept me playing for hours on end day after day for years
    Survival seems like it should have been how the entire game worked, with you losing any loot you gained since your last safe house visit if you die. Had the division 1 released with the all of Survival mechanics, and a bit more freedom in the exploration, I think the rest would have come very quickly and naturally with couple years of live service support. That’s would have been a sight to see

    God the Survival mode of this game was always peak in my memory. Nothing has topped it yet.
    I will occasionally hop back in just to re-experience the mode and how great it felt.
    I mostly have moved on from the series, but I will NEVER forget the survival mode.
    Part of the wonder of the mode for me is just how well it *re-contextualizes* areas of the game that you might be familiar with from the main game. Like, the dark zone is even more hostile, and areas you might be familiar with are completely turned on their heads with the atmosphere change. It’s wonderful.
    By the way, loved the video.

    Something I've always loved about Div 1 was it felt cold, especially in Survival. I could be playing the game while it is in the middle of summer time irl, and still be be able to picture it.
    Always loved the atmosphere of Div 1 and ngl, always felt Div 2 was more... cartoony in comparison (even if it wasn't really).
    Said atmosphere both carried the game and honestly also carried the story (or lack there of) in itself. To me, it felt like everyone in the world around you was trying to survive the winter more then even the disease that had ravaged the city not long before. The bits of in game lore and side stories really carried this idea to me and even to today I think back to the game every once and awhile. Also the lighting engine did amazing for what it needed too.
    Though, like mentioned many times in this video. Div 1's enemies are... really tanky, sometimes to an extreme. In some of the other content of the game, basically the equivalent of dungeons of other MMOs. You can run into other versions of the hunters, of the survival mode that are mentioned. Whose AI can be extremely lacking at times and healthpools immense, with the ability to basically fully heal themselves multiple times unless.
    Still dangerous in their own ways, since they don't lack damage or the ability to remove a downed player from the fight entirely. But, they are the perfect example of enemies in Div 1 having too much health.
    Addition: Part of the reason I feel like Div 1/Survival did so well in my opinion. Was they made an atmosphere that felt bleak and even the world itself seemed to be fighting against you, and the game played into it heavily in survival. You can't always see your enemy perfectly, they can't always see you perfectly. Hell, its a good part of the reason I've personally come to enjoy Helldivers 2 in this sense. Some of those planets have horrible visibility just naturally and I love it.

    While the story isn’t at the forefront of both games, it is there. As someone who is deeply invested in the lore of the games, I can say that the story/lore is really interesting and the games have a healthy connection between gameplay and lore. If you don’t care for the story then you don’t need to worry about it but if you are someone who wants to know more, then finding the lore based comms which are usually in mission areas and well traversed areas is easy to do. Huge fan of the series and glad to see that it’s still getting traction to this day.

    Holy shit I miss this mode so much! Can't say I miss playing Division 1 (all the grind eventually drained the fun out of the experience), but watching this video reminded me how well put together this game mode was and even made me miss New York having lived there briefly when I was in the US. Survival was a refuge where my gear score didn't matter and I could just soak in the vibes. It's honestly kind of relaxing in PvE mode and I had some wholesome interactions with other players, which rarely happens elsewhere in Division.

    As weird as it is, there was a Roblox game that I had played a fair bit a few years ago, and it involved running out into a snow storm to collect gear and equipment before returning to a base to defend from waves of enemies. Was quite good for being a Roblox game and the atmosphere was always great, especially the oddly high quality music and the properly voiced companion notifying you of different things... never expected to hear that music again after the game closed down. Until, when your video suddenly pops into my recommended and the track Vandra started playing. Always thought that music was just a bit too high quality to be made for some Roblox game. So thank you for this video, as it made me look into getting the game and it just so happened to be on sale on Steam as I write this, so I got the base game and the game mode for a whole 7.50, not bad at all.

    Like your vibe that is throughout the whole video, remember's me the old days with Marcostyle (the one who did the most videos about div1) I played over 4000 hours in div 1 and 2. Left it now because it went a path that is way of the original. I wait for 3 now end of this year and hope survival will return. To be honest I never noticed the great music because I lowered the volume to chat with others. For sure I going to listen to the album now. Division was for me the best game ever, despite of how much the dev's fu... It up. Thanks for this great video. It reflects a lot of what I experienced in my Division days.

  • @TacBans
    @TacBans Před 28 dny +2

    Survival's gotta be one of my all time favorite experiences of gaming in general. Can't imagine how many hours I've put into the gamemode alone. Hell, it's one of the reasons I ended up pre-ordering the sequel's special edition, even though I rarely play TD2 nowadays! (still, can't believe you didn't mention Dock Wrecks in the soundtrack section smh my head)
    One thing I felt worth mentioning, there's a setting that (I believe) is called Neutral Lighting. Setting it to On removes a lot of the artificial lights that are invisible for gameplay purposes. It is pretty much night and day for the lighting, it can be genuinely difficult to make out enemies, especially if you're in a brightly lit room IRL. That said, when you're just wandering the Light Zone with it enabled, scavenging for parts and dodging patrols... it is unmatched. Of course, it does make the game harder, but it's assistance to the vibe offers a risk-reward scenario, imo.
    Anyways, hard agree on a lot of the stuff here. I just wish there was something like it. Nothing has ever really matched the feel of my first Sunrise Run. Seeing the daylight peek through the storm clouds into the Dark Zone, with minutes on the clock, and the Hunter fight waiting... It is a thing of beauty. Modded STALKER is good, but it's just not a 100% match. And, if Ubisoft proceeds unimpeded, I may never get to experience something quite like it again. I do hope Ross Scott makes some progress, can't believe I'm now waiting on _two_ ongoing projects from him. (FM and SKG)

    I enjoyed The Division and the Dark Zone was so cool to experience back in the day, but Survival was definitely my favourite part of it. The atmosphere is top notch and there's some great ideas in it, it needed a little bit more polish and it could have easily been it's own game. As always though a game mode being DLC is always going to have a low player base which is a shame. If it was one of the default modes in the 2nd game, it probably would have gotten more traction with how extraction shooter and battle royale titles were gaining popularity around the time. Great video on this awesome mode!

    You've convinced me to give Survival a try, looks breathtaking. The option of PvP & PvE is EXACTLY what I want in such a game - sweat mode and semi turn brain off mode. I think the rarity of players playing would even make a PvP encounter so much more tense.
    This is a mode that deserves a player comeback with new players joining too. Die hard fans should really push players to join in on the fun, even all these years later.

    "not that hard to kill"
    I was in a group of 3, we found a fourth outside the dz, with a fifth tagging along in the dz. Once you have 3 players in a group, hunters get armor. They become way harder to kill, require coordination to kill, and just one armored hunter can still wreck the entire team. It took us 15 minutes to kill them all. We fought 6 of them. A 6th person came by, but got merced by the hunters and left before we could revive him. The heli only has 4 seats and I was left. I had to go find more materials for a flare gun, fight through enemies, scavenge more shots to keep my timer up by minutes (the more you use, the less effective they are), find a safehouse and craft the flaregun, before fighting my way back to extract. I died 100 feet from extract by a sniper. An awesome and tragic adventure. The hunter's toughness ruined my time. at 100 feet from extract, I had 6 minutes on my timer and the heli takes 5 to fly in. I was cutting it close when i died.

    I have been pleading and begging for survival 2.0 for 4+ years. If it’s not in Division 3, then the devs have no clue what they are doing. I used to reply it every night for about 8-10 months. Me and a friend. We loved it. It was amazing. The presence of danger. Others trying to steal your supplies. Then once you get to the dark zone it gets just crazy. Omg it was so good. The need for meds. The need for warmth. The thirst for a good gun early. I remember so many Amazing memories playing this game mode. And yet… they didn’t add it to div 2. I will never understand why. I figured it was because they had “heart land” coming. Until they cancelled it. Now all I can hope is they just added heart land as a game mode in division 3
