On this episode of HOT ROD Garage, hosts Tony Angelo and Lucky Costa are going to take on the legendary Aussie engine, the Ford Barra. It’s a beastly 4.0L six-cylinder turbocharged unit that churns out enough combined tire smoke yearly to blot out the sun! These engines are the best that Australia has to offer, and they reign supreme in the land down under. The boys think that Chevrolet might have just built something in the Vortec 4200 that could be a better Barra! Both engines are around four liters, both are inline-six cylinders, both have 24 valves, so there’s only one thing to do, and that’s build a couple of these Vortec engines up, bolt turbochargers to them, and see what they can do!

@@Silkmaster4200 It's not the torquiest of small i6 engines but they do lend themselves better to lots of torque than pretty much anything else. That's why commercial haulers use i6s and v12s so much. I6 crankshafts are so easy to balance and therefore don't flex much. Ill take a strong v8 any day but IMO v12s (2xi6) are the way to go for durability and potential.

@@trailspeed7037 Quite a few people have already done it, I think they are basically limited to 400 horsepower or lower though for reliability concerns. Some people have swapped these into old I6 cars, like the Dodge Dart Sprint, and reliably gotten high 300 horsepower from them. The problem is that nobody makes aftermarket parts for these, so everything has to be fabricated. its much easier to pick up a junk yard LS motor and make way more horsepower for far less money and with out the need to custom make everything. But, at the same time, the LS swaps have gotten stale, and hopefully enough people start looking at the Vortec 4200 and maybe someone will start making parts for them.
I also have a Trailblazer, its my daily. I wish I could put a small turbo on it just to gain some HP in the upper RPM range, but I also would have jsut bought a V8 Trailblazer if I actually wanted power. The 4.2 is just a reliably boat anchor, and thats all I really want out of it.

They have another 4200 with some reground cams, making over 772 horsepower at the wheels, through a 4l60e. It's an awesome channel in the explaining exact detail of what they do. Its good to see a non-V8 build!
Next season, please consider the High Performance version of the Ford 2.3 Ecoboost. It was only available in the Focus RS, but now its an option in the Mustang as well. The HiPO 2.3 Mustangs are beginning to show up in salvage yards and they are cheap because most people want the Mustang V8. The 2.3 makes 340HP/350FtLb out of the box and can easily make over 500HP with just a larger turbo and tune. Turbonetics has a package for the 2.3 Ecoboost. The 2.3 is a easy swap because it bolts up to the same motor mounts and transmission as the Ford modular V8. Drop a light weight 500HP 2.3 Ecoboost in an old trashed Lotus 7 kit car and have a 1200lb thrill ride!

While everything was out I swapped front diffs with one I had rebuilt and put a trailblazer transfer case in it along with a trailblazer TCCM and a few extra wires so I could have selectable 4wd with lo range.

Love the show, especially the 2jz/LS/12v shootout. Sooo glad ur doing 1 of these atlas inline engines,as theirs a ton of interest just no aftermarket support. Give them a little support in the aftermarket I think theyd smash a 2jz. Nothing against a 2jz, they're awesome motors but, these 4200's have just about as strong bottom ends from the factory. GM used this 4.2 w turbo in Baja 1000 race. It made 650hp w zero issues. Alot of people, inc myself have wanted to build 1 of these, especially a turbo 3.7 i5 but no support cuz everyone goes LS. Anyway, look forward 2 seeing the rest of this show (only seeing preview now). Love the show. On another note, velocity selling to motortrend really screwed my favorite channel up. There were also complaints of worse fuel economy than the 5.3.. lol and it only has vvt for the exhaust, but the head and block look pretty stout, probably a good platform to make custom parts for, but who's gonna put out the money and r&d?

    • @Drake5153
      @Drake5153 Před 4 lety +2

@Meta World Peace I'm not sure tuning would be the end of the world with how cheap they are to get, nor is a basic stand alone if your shooting for what the barra can do with a bit of work, it's more about how much hp the stock unit can take and what can be improved without going billet/custom everything. But the biggest thing MT forgot to recognize was the driving force behind the rb/jz/barra delevlopement, the lineage and followers the V4200 is clearly lacking. I have a feeling theres a reason GM dropped this engine from its future plans of using this engine in place of the 6.0 ls, mainly the cost of a stock ls vs the upgraded rods, pistons, piston oil jets, injectors, high flow oil pump, exhaust, bigger turbo/s and intake vct... so basically a whole build for 400hp and torque.. on 8.5 psi mind you but still, that's a LOT of work to make decent, tunable power. And large hp? Out of the question without a destroker kit, you'd run out of rpm for your turbo before you'd hit head flow limitations. There's already proven platforms out there and with tech advancing you'd be better off with a b58, you'd get more efficiency niceties for your dollar, not to mention a platform to enjoy it in.

It also comes with a main girdle, which I don't think the barra does.. but it comes down to what your looking for, and how much harassment you wanna take from the GM and ls boys lol. And I was referring to what they say in the video... they said in the video that comparatively, a barra makes around 410 hp with more boost and fuel(meaning at the crank), and that was the goal with the atlas 4200. Assuming that the engine they were referencing was on of the ones that makes 360 flywheel stock, upping the boost some and adding fuel would be somewhere in the realm of a 50 hp gain, hence the 410 power number. Summary from the full episode: The stock engine with stock manifold and up-pipe, STS "like a big T04B", injectors and tune it made just over 400 crank HP and 400 lb.ft. Not bad! The "built" engine didn't start. No info or video of the internals or the block.
In my opinion there are 3 main concerns when building a big power engine: block, crank and aftermarket support. Everything else, pistons, rods, engine management, fuel system, etc. can (and will have to be) replaced without breaking the bank IF there is aftermarket support. Billet blocks and forged cranks however are often very expensive and require a lot of machining.
The LL8 Vortec 4200 might check one of these boxes, the crank. The LL8 is a aluminum block with a "semi-open" deck design therefore not ideal for big power. It has next to none aftermarket support. I have no info on the crank though.
Is it possible to make a 1000HP LL8? Sure. Is it feasible? No. Just get a Barra, 1-/2JZ, RB30, M50/M54, M104, whatever floats your boat and is available in your region.
That said, it was a interesting experiment. Someone has to go first! I would just like more technical info on the engine next time.

MCM isnt free, they have many sponsors and because they take money and resources from other companies much of what they do is focused on making them happy rather that on you as the viewer.
The fact is anybody trying to make this kind of content will run into the money issue before long, and not everyone can take the same route, a single episode of Roadkill can cost between $500 and $700K
How many other shows does motor trend produce? How much can you possibly think they make off youtube?
Look at it this way, when you pay for something you are the customer and you have the power, when you seem to get something for free that meant you are NOT the customer. In the case of youtube you are the product.
Why do you think youtube only ever makes changes that benefit their actual customers and not their viewers?
If you actually paid your way through life you would have an actual say in what you get.

I’m in the land of aus and dont the stock bottom ends handle up to 600 rear wheel kilowatts? It was mentioned in a street machine episode at one of the performance shops that they found the limit is 600 rear wheel kilowatts. That’s roughly 800 wheel horsepower. Getting close to 900 ish crank horsepower. I don’t have the time to look it up to reference it but I do remember it being mentioned

You can pick up a used Barra for about 400 Bucks in Aus also{about $290US}. I have no idea where you were looking to get $8K but it wouldn't have been stock. Good luck making 1500 rwhp that the missus will also drive down the shops for the bread and milk without attracting any attention. I can't wait to see this unfold
