Lever action/revolver combo for survival

  • Cowboys and others on the western frontier in the mid-late 1800's often carried a lever action and revolver chambered in the same cartridge. 150 years later, preppers should consider doing the same in order to simplify logistics. Lever actions and revolvers are as effective for hunting and defense as they were back then. www.selfreliancepublishing.com

I had the same thoughts. In a pure survivor oriented situation. Or a long term bug out, one bullet to rule them all. 357 baby. It is a Best All Around decision

    I have a Rossi/Puma .357 20" carbine, and a 6" S&W .357 revolver. I like the combo, which I bought in 2003... so twenty years ago.

I reload 15 different calibers, cast my own lead bullets and have been saying for a long time that if I ever had to narrow everything down to one caliber it would be 357 magnum for all the reasons you mentioned.

      Why not .45😭😭🥺

    • @Prepare2Survive
      @Prepare2Survive Před 9 měsíci +2

@@oscarbear7498 I still reload 45acp and like the caliber, but I don't reload 45LC. The main reason I would choose 357 mag instead of 45acp is because the ammo is lighter weight which matters if you're having to carry ammo in a backpack in the wilderness and from a 3" barrel or longer the 357 mag has more energy than 45acp. From a rifle barrel the 357 mag has over 1000 ft lbs energy and with many loadings has more energy than a AR15 shooting 556. Plus 357 mag bullets have a higher sectional density meaning they'll penetrate deeper or break through thicker bones than 45acp. When it comes to 45LC I don't reload it because I already reload 44 mag so I don't see any advantage to having another caliber that uses very similar bullets that are only 5% wider. The other main reason is because 44 mag brass is 10 times easier to find for free at my local shooting ranges than 45LC brass. The reason why I would choose 38/357 mag vs 45LC or even 44spc/44 mag is because the kinetic energy difference isn't very much, the ammo weight is heavier and 38 special wouldn't damage as much meat on small game as 44 special or 45LC would. Plus in an emergency if you needed to pull apart ammo of different calibers that you find to make your own ammo, the chances are much higher the ammo you find will have small primers as opposed to large primers which means it would be easier to reload 357 mag from scavenged components than it would 44 mag or 45LC.

      @@Prepare2Survive very interesting.
Personally I just went all in on .45 cal.
45acp is basically a fat 9mm , extending the cartridge you get a 45colt, and can be loaded to 45 colt +p which is slightly more energy than 44mag, you can extend the casing to 454 casull which is pretty much all you need for hunting ,and to go the distance of 200 yards you can go 460mag that's flat shooting at that distance. Basically a 45-70 thats more efficient in shorter barrel , 45-70 could be loaded hotter but there's no need if 460 is already over kill.
It has the widest spectrum of velocity for a size bullet.
It is heavier, and you'll need a 460xvr, 460 encore.
A Redhawk in 454 casull is probably the best option that's rated at 65psi, you can skip the rifle and just carry that with a mounted scope. That's where I see it shining in that you just take 1 gun vs 2.
357 is more comfortable and compact, cheaper to shoot so you get more practice. Since I only focus on .45 it's not so bad, but if I had other caliber it would just sit there. I love guns but unfortunately it's best to stick to 1-2 calibers max and become the best at those vs having 8 different calibers and shooting them ever so often... which is what I first did.
Plus for ammo stock piling, it's a nightmare to have to stock for 8 different calibers vs just 1 or maybe 2.

@@oscarbear7498 Yeah, the one gun that does it all is a great concept. I think a lot of people are getting into 10mm Auto for that reason. The 460 / 454 / 45lc offers some good versatility, but the firearm and ammo weight is considerably more AND those calibers do much more damage to meat on small game. During an extended disaster where people are starving, depending on where you live most of the medium to large game will be hunted away first and it's the smaller game that'll still be available. In a situation like that it's probably also a good idea to use small game traps like 110 and 220 conibear traps because they won't draw any attention from starving people like the sound of a gunshot will. That's essentially the sound of a dinner bell going off. That also makes a good case for having a silencer on a handgun and/or rifle. 45acp, 38 special, 44 special and 45lc can be subsonic and very quiet with a silencer.

@@Prepare2Survive 45 cal from what I've look at us the closest thing to a do it all gun that doesn't exist. You can also shoot cowboy special which is basically a 45acp in a revolver to slow down even more.
Also 410 being of size to shoot birds, the weight is an issue but if it can replace a rifle enough in most situations I'll skip the rifle.
Rifle being used for shots over 150 yards, If a revolver can take shots at 150 yards with a shooting stick, I'll leave the Rifle and just bring the revolver vs a handgun and rifle.
Taking 2 guns is just ridiculous, as you'll just use the better gun, the back up gun is dead weight, and if you have to switch to the back up gun your probably dead or wished you just packed more ammo for your better gun for shtf. How i got to the conclusion to just focus on 1 caliber.
For small game like rabbit, I rather use a bow, trap, snare, something that isn't a gun. Keeping ammo just for combat, angry dog, and sometimes deer in shtf.
The only thing I don't like about the 357 magnum is the energy it carries at 150 yards. Now 350 legend.... look intresting, it's like a 357 magnum but more modern and has a flat shot at 125 yards.
350 legend might be the better pick , I don't have experience with it but there's alot of hype and on paper has the velocity, energy, and flat trajectory to even hit out to 200 yards, perfect.
Unfortunately I'm too invested in .45 and extra funds I rather just stash more ammo or use it in other areas vs buy another gun xD although very tempting.
If I did buy a new gun it would be in 350 legend just to try it. I think you might like it since you already have the bullets, sharing the same diameter to a 357mag.

You have made a very valid point! I appreciate that you took time to mention you own a few other weapons of different calibers, however, the ammunition you have to actually accumulate and store is one caliber. I also appreciate that you took some time to actually research and present the historical evidence to back your argument/case. Thank You. For a well researched, thought out post on this topic. May you and your Family have a Blessed Day.

If a situational problem presents itself I have a .45/.45 Thompson combo. I also have AR and handgun combos in 9mm. Reason I have so many various combos - I can hand off some to family members to enhance our survivability.

An often overlooked advantage of revolvers and lever guns is that ammo quality is less important than with semi-autos, so you can load anything that fits and won't have problems with the action as it is all manual. It's why I like bolt action hunting rifles and break/pump shotguns over self loaders.
The people going on about magazine capacity clearly don't hunt - if your first shot doesn't hit, most animals won't hang around for your 20th!

@@graymadden8707 Nice video. Bob Gone Wild's on to something. I carry the 3'' Ruger LCRx revolver in 22 mag. with my 18'' Ruger American bolt in 22 mag loaded with the standard 10 rd mag and keep a 15 rd mag for backup/capacity. It's a great light combo for long distance hiking or backpacking, when packed-weight really counts. If I want more power in the revolver, I take the 3'' 38 special LCRx along with the 22 mag bolt rifle.

Yep. That's what I've been telling them down at the office. These guys with 20 different guns/calibers...too much. If you got friends you coop prep with, consider standardizing your choice of a caliber so you can share. If I had to choose only one firearm and no sidearm? 20 gauge with a 20-22 inch barrel and a wide variety of ammo: Birdshot, BB, Buck, and Slugs. 12 gauge tears up small game too much but a 20 gauge will kill anything in North America with the right load and shot placement. It's like the "intermediate round" philosophy: Reasonably powerful and better weight/firepower ratio for carrying lots of ammo.

Very good info. I have always thought this same thing. High-speed low drag semis are awesome. But I like to also think about many years after SHTF. I think this combo can be the best and easier combo to keep running for years after all the plastic guns have started to run down. I also believe in reloading, and with that learn to reload with hand tools like the original lee loader.

The never find yourself in a scenario that needs more then 3 shots is a myth self deffense shootings end in an average of 3 shots not a majority of 3 shots most self deffense scenarios end in no shots and you rarely end up in one to begin with but that dosent mean you can't or won't end up in one that requires more if you end up In a shooting self deffense scenario where the bad guy dosent run away the probality of you using more then 3 shots is fairly high the reload statement is true as gun fights don't last long and you don't have time to reload under fire so what you have in capacity is what you have drawing a back up is actually more common then reloading so that's worth mentioning I don't hate revolvers I love revolvers especially for self deffense but all guns have limitations advantages and disadvantages the revolvers is capacity and its advantages are reliability and not being able to induce a jam if someone grabs it
