  • Federal Q2B... If I ever video that again, I will probably back the camera up a little more and zoom in. The camera was about 8 feet away and it sounds like it was giving the mic some trouble...
    The squealing you hear at around 2:00 was some guy driving by in a truck with maintenance issues, not the siren.
    To any fellow Firefighters and former Firefighters, I don't have to tell you about how your heartbeat kicks up a notch when you hear one of these, or how you can tell just by how the operator is running it whether they're responding to a medical call or a sho' nuff structure fire. Enjoy!
    Anyone with a line on a STH-10, leave me a comment, I'm looking for one.

    The best and loudest mechanical siren ever made, with a very distinct sound. Many of these come with electric brakes. Without applying the brakes, these things will spin for a long time. I was at a car fire once. The fire engine responding had a Q2B. It arrived, the fire was put out, and the siren was still spinning enough to make a sound.

    I have one of these in excellent used condition. They are the most powerful vehicle siren to my knowledge. A wonderful mechanical siren sound. All of our fire engines here have one on the bumper. These sirens have been used for years on firetrucks. They probably sell for over $2,000.00 today.

    Nothing makes a fire rig sound as good as the Federal Q mechnical siren. It gets you noticed and pepole used to get the hell out of your way when you used it. The only other thing that some times works are those new low end Rumbler sirens. thanks for sharing. Now all you need is the rest of the engine or ladder to put that on!

    There was a man named John Dorgan aka "The Siren Man", who was widely recognized among collectors as the authority on sirens and vintage warning lighting. He passed away a year or two ago but his family is continuing his work, I believe. CZcams won't let me post the link here but google sirenman and it should be the first result.

    What makes the "wavering" "pulsating" sound, heard more easily starting at 1:40 ?

    • @GeorgiaFF
      @GeorgiaFF  Před 8 lety

      +Robert Gift I don't know... probably something to do with the shape of the sound waves, the size of the apertures, and the speed of the rotor all coming together in a particular way. I'd like to know, myself. It sounds that way in person, it's not just the mic.

    • @robertgift
      @robertgift Před 8 lety

      +Jeremiah Shaw The sirens on our apparatæ do the same. But I do not recall hearing the effect from my Federal Signal 2t22A tornado siren. Its 10 and 12-port rotors are nothing like the Q's beautiful 14?-port rotor.
      (Years ago I told Federal Signal their Q rotors should have 1/4 the ports to produce a tone two octaves lower at peak rpm.) Lower frequencies travel farther through air and penetrate vehicles better.

    • @friedmanirit
      @friedmanirit Před 7 lety

      The wa-wa-wa-wa is because the Stators are made in a mold, making them not perfect, and the rotors are not perfectly balanced.
      B&M makes their sirens on a lathe and have perfectly balanced rotors.

    • @robertgift
      @robertgift Před 7 lety

      Edaan Friedman How can one lathe a rotor? Rotors are balanced by drilling shallow holes in them.
      When I line my rotors up with their stator ports, they are almsost perfectly matched.

    • @friedmanirit
      @friedmanirit Před 7 lety

      You misunderstood me. What I'm trying to say is that the rotor on the Q is not perfectly centered, causing it to make that wah-wah sound.
      The other thing I was saying is that the gap on a Q between the rotor and the stator on one side can be 20,000th of an inch, and on the other side it can be 50,000th of an inch.
      On a B&M the gap is exactly the same everywhere because it's lathed.

      Our Q has absolutely no problem clearing traffic, I don't think it's the siren

    • @robertgift
      @robertgift Před 8 lety

      xArkAngelx We approach some big intersections which could clear _earlier_ if the siren were at a much lower pitch. Lower pitches attenuate less in air (travel farther) and penetrate vehicles better.
      Federal Signal made a mistake in making so many ports in their sirens.
      (As it winds down to lower frequencies, you can feel the pressure pulses from my Federal Signal 2t22A tornado siren.)

    • @MrMcbear
      @MrMcbear Před 8 lety

      +Robert Gift Tbh intersections don't clear fast enough not because people don't hear it. But people just don't give a fuck anymore. Here in NJ people freeze and dont move at all or just ignore you.

    • @robertgift
      @robertgift Před 8 lety

      Mathew Festoff People do care. They try to help but often get surprised and do not know what to do or can't quickly figure out what is best. Some freeze.
      Yesteray I'm in left lane (#1). Approached a woman in #1 ahead. No other traffic near. She easily could have changed lanes to #2 or 3 or 4 and continued. Instead, she slows to a stop. (As a forner (AAA) driver instuctor, many people are afraid to change lanes, especially to the right.)
      Another problem is people not hearing the siren. Fire kept their siren peaked at top RPM (steady tone) Wife and I did not even recognize a siren. Must go up and down in frequency.
