Yes I bare handed, no veil, scooped them out of the cardboard box I shook them into. They stung me several times when I shook them off the branch. I decided to treat them better when we got home. And they rewarded me with zero stings and began to march into the hive. I have opened that hive several times since with no suit, no veil, no gloves, wearing shorts & sandals ..... no stings so far. Only when I initially shook them as the experienced beekeeper said to do. I'll do it my way here on out. No shaking unless absolutely necessary.

    Tip :
Better way to anchor them to that Nuc Hive, would of been to get a Frame of Open Brood, from your Blue Hive, (shake all their Bees off.) Take the Eggs, uncapped Brood Frame etc... to your Nuc, then scoop up that Swarm !
    Why you ask ? 👀
Well Bees are Hard Wired to look after 'Uncapped Young' aka keep it Warm and Fed !
So add some donor Brood, then your Swarm (Bees only.) That way you get a Happy Homed Swarm, that wont absconed ! Simples. 😎
    🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
    Happy Beekeeping 2022.
    🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
Also, at the same time, add some 1:1 Syrup inside the Hive Box, at Evening.... Close the Hive Entrance Up ! And leave them for a couple of Days. Bees will Build Wax, add 1:1 Syrup into the Comb, as faux Nectar (Needed Food Resources) And, in these days the Bees are enclosed, they will "Forget" their old location... Bond to that Nuc, and, on opening the entrance, will start to "Orientate" to their New Home. Simples. 😎

  • @eastsussexbeesandwildlife5801

Very nice swarm, look forward to the update. I have sadly lost my bees over the winter, so hoping for a few swarms to arrive in the spring, bait hives already set up. Best wishes from the UK. Peter

Swarms that get caught hanging out in bad weather , cold & rain , get extremely agitated.
Caught one yesterday that I spotted in the rain. It’s been three days since warm weather so the honey they gorged on was depleted, and if they don’t settle down they will be getting a new queen.

    • @StewartFarmApiary

We had a hive when I was a kid. One morning, while making breakfast, mom observed that we were out of honey.
Dad sighed, and headed for his mask and coveralls.
I got up and said, save yourself some time, dad, I got this," and went out and came right back with a frame of honey.
Dad was stunned, and asked how I did that without getting stung.
And mom said, "Because he sits at the base of the nest and reads to them for hours a day."

A couple of things. Nice catch. It's a nice size swarm. The concern I would have is the size of the nuc. Bees that swarm like a specific size hive and a nuc isn't it. Put a second one on for the space they need.

Don't be silly, if a colony is doing the "queenless roar" you can tell by just walking by and listening. But this wasn't a colony, it was a swarm. Almost by definition a swarm will have a queen. Besides, they were perfectly calm and docile before he moved them, and the sound they made after that is called "fanning" and is how you know they have a queen very often, as fanning is their way of communicating to each other where the queen is.

In my opinion, there is little chance of catching a swarm from your hive. Bees don't want compit for food to succeed. That is why they fly away from the place of "birth". Of course, if there is an empty hive in the apiary, there is a good chance that some foreign bees will move into it.
