Okay, I give you an example of how powerful an actor Sir Anthony Hopkins is. I thought this was Sir Anthony at an actual AA meeting! I had no idea he was an actor delivering lines in a movie! You don't get more realistic, believable, convincing, and authentic than that. IMHO, he is better than the great Olivier, Brando, or many others. I place him in the hallowed company of comparable thespians as Peter O'Toole, Michael Caine, Dame Judy Dench, and Dame Maggie Smith. His voice is hypnotic. Bravo!
I thought this was a real testimonial until the end. The others said ”Thank you, John.” My father was an AA member for many years. He said they used first names only, and in this snippet they thank John. Knew the great actor was a sober man though.
@@melissasw64 My apologies, Melissa. I probably should not have offered an unverified answer. I have never seen either movie so kindly disregard my guess. Sorry
He is estranged from hs daughter in real life, maybe that's where he got the emotion from? But I do agree with you, he does put his heart and soul into his acting.
@@desertmandan123 I mean his performance in the father has got to be the best acting I’ve ever seen and I’ve watched a significant number of films in my life time. It felt so real to a point that I started questioning if we were looking into someone’s own private life.
It was not until I started reading the comments (and I’m still not sure) that I realized he was acting. Everything about his delivery is so genuine. Great acting is simply about being real and vulnerable.
In other words, you were not sure whether it was a character or himself. Could it be because he tends to play himself rather than adapt to the character he's palying?
Good actors play parts that well represent themselves; Mel Gibson comes to mind. Great actors play any part as though they are playing themselves; Antony Hopkins,Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Judy Dench.

I would say that a great actor doesn't say the lines as if they were his own thoughts. He says them as if they were the own thoughts of the character. I think the problem with Hopkins is that he does what you say. They sound like lines AH actually thinks. There are some comments down below that argue whether the scene is from a movie or from an AA meeting. What creates this confusion? The fact that Antony Hopkins is often indistinguishable from the characters he plays. They become him rather than the other way around.
The greatest actor of all time. If you have not watched Shadowlands in 1993, he plays CS Lewis, it’s a masterpiece of both powerful and emotional acting. Truly his best work. He and Debra Winger are astounding. Breathtaking performances.

Like Anthony's daughter, I am an only child whose parents divorced. It was horrific because they hated one another. My mother turned me against him. One day, I got a call from my dad asking if I would like to spend a couple of days in Puerto Rico, where he was working. I went. But we reach the top together learning different things that we were meant to learn and meet Jesus and move on hopefully. Just my opinion as an older man today at 63.
Love & light!
I felt each line as he was saying it. That's great acting.
I know of a portuguese poem that goes like this (free translation): "A poet is a pretender. And occasionaly, he pretends so sincerely that he pretends to be pain the actual pain he sincerely feels".
Grateful for the truth (+search, +doubts) of Anthony Hopkins (Sir).
Sir Anthony is one of the world’s best actors.
My all-time favorite actor. Brilliant man!
Thank you for sharing, Sir Anthony Hopkins. Yes,this is is an old clip, but you never know who, when, how or why someone is gonna touch your heart when you are in need of just a bit of hope. This dis-ease is progressive whether in or out. And this thing called life? It's a bus stop. Life happens while I wait for the bus. But it sure is easier with the wisdom of the Elder Statesmen. My name is Raqui. And I'm an alcoholic. My recovery date is May 2, 2000. Thank you.💜
Being blessed with a Welsh mum and a dad of Welsh/Irish heritage therefore forever wearing my heart on my sleeve, I am so reassured and reminded of what it is to be so.
Usa ??
Prayer, short for praise is a way to tell God you love him and you are thankful for everything. It’s not a tool to ask for gifts like an adolescent. Get that straight.
I never heard this before but it's so incredibly true. When you finally have done all you can and throw your hands up... God steps in.
Colonel Ludlow. Legends of the Fall. Legends are lesson..they ring with truth..those eyes and elephant candles on piano. Good Welshman this..🙌🙏🔥💥

Take all the loveable things that you adore from your closest loved ones and friends ,and I would say that is what Sir Anthony Hopkins manages to portray in his acting persona.I think my Generation (I’m 66 years young ) have been so blessed to grow old along with so many great actors, including Richard Burton Richard Harris Laurence Olivier John Gielgud Glenda Jackson Judi Dench..
