    You flew over Lake Tanganyika at some point that night, likely in those thunderstorms. That would be an interesting technicality, except that the terrain east of the lake is mostly below 3500' MSL, but just east of the lake there is a substantial ridge up to around 7000 to 8000 feet. Following the ground through there could have led to some excitement as the terrain jumps from 3000' MSL to the ridge at 8000 MSL. There's a gap along your direct route but given your circumstances, it would have been dumb luck if you had flown through it and missed the sharp ridge. Climbing into the thunderstorms put you above that, but it sounds like a hell of a lucky coincidence...
