Envy is ruining your woodworking

  • It's easy to jump on to CZcams, watch some woodworking, and feel inspired. The opposite is also true. You jump onto CZcams, see someone crank out a mission style coffee table using those "red tools" and festool gear and you don't think there's a chance you could do the same with your average woodworking tools.
    Stop comparing.
Realize that many of the biggest influencer woodworkers on CZcams are just that--influencers. And often really good woodworkers. But they're influencers. They're sponsored by companies to use their gear so that you'll see their gear and envy it.
    Oh, marketing.
Instead, focus on the gear you have, the skills you have, and developing your work one project at a time. When you can afford a $600 disc sander, great--but don't think it's what will make you enjoy this hobby.
Thanks for watching. I hope, as hobbyists, you have fun in the shop and try some fun things along the way. Just don't get caught up in thinking you need all the green and red tools to make something kick ass.

Awesome! Thank you for the reality check. Sage words from an unsponsored fellow Woodworker. I will keep using my old Beaver 4" jointer that I tuned up. Cheers.

You bet! Love hearing from us hobbyist woodworkers. A 4" jointer can do plenty I'm sure. Thanks for watching!

More wood working channels need to be like this. So much of it is just tool marketing, gets old quick. Cheers man

Thanks a lot. I appreciate it. And fully agreed. I'm tired of channels being commercials.

Great advice. Really important for people to realize that the fancy bandsaw that is always in shot for big time youtubers is probably not one they bought themselves. The tool that "you can't live without" was probably given for free to be used in promo's. I've seen some incredible things being made with the simplest of tools. I've built up my shop and shop tools over years and years. Buy once cry once may be relevant for the cheaper sub 100 dollar tools but if someone doesn't know they want to do woodworking for the rest of their lives should absolutely not spend 5k on a sawstop right away.

Those bandsaws. I can only imagine some hobbyist going out and buying a 17" bandsaw...total overkill to get started with. Thanks for watching.

I started with my old dad's tools, basically a drill, a set of screw drivers, a hard teeth saw and a plane, did I get to do something? Yes, lots of small things and a workbench. 20 years later I have a rather big amount of tools, as a hobbyist, 20 years of saving, buying and gifts and, the most important thing, the learning curve, you won't be Jimmy DiResta by having Jimmy's shop.
Being honest, most old timer woodworkers, around early 20th Century, had less tools on hand than any starter today with a couple of hundreds to spend and built somewhat basic, shakers style, but technically perfect and serviciable forniture.

So true--Jimmy DiResta with limited tools would be something to behold I'm sure. Thanks for watching!

You can make fantastic things with a handsaw, plane, hammer and nails....
