The sky is gray because of all the forest fire smoke in the air. At one point there was more than 100 fires burning in Alberta this spring.
Great video. I feel very lucky to have experienced hiking with you and your group! Learned SO much. The best laughs/experiences/new friends.
This is great Marty. I appreciate the chair comment. It makes me realize I’m the guy that brings the chair, then feels bad sitting in it! ;-)
Funny how that is. That's a real-life example. We talk about chairs before every trip. Never used to bring one. It's a game change, especially as I got older.
That’s a very good video to make Marty. Not often discussed but crucial for sure. I’ve seen you in action as “leader” and it’s a nice added layer of organization and safety. Seeing these old footage really makes me miss the group and yourself! Hope we can hike soon!
Great tips, you elaborated and explained everything so nicely! 🔥🔥
Great tips, buddy!
Great informative video, thanks Marty.
Ahhhhh some REALLY good Tips here Man, makes me wanna Start Hiking... 🤘
Glad to hear it!
Good points. Thanks
Your stats need a little work. The odds for a single person =1/4 then the odds of something not occurring are 3/4. Four identical people then the odds of something occurring are 1-P(not occurring) or 1-(3/4)^4=0.68. So your logic is correct just not your implication that a problem would occur had a probability of 1!
Cool. I over-simplified because my audience is generally not interested in long discussions on probability. Question for you. Based on this math, would you say that the odds of something that can ruin a hike becomes quite significant for a group larger than 6 or 7 people? I know there's a lot of factors (severity of the even that would lead to a cancelation, length of the hike etc). Anecdotally it seems that large groups always have problems.
@@Martyupnorth I agree, it has been my experience that with large groups there is always someone who has a gear problem or gets hurt. Speaking for myself, a sample of 1, I know that I tend to take bigger risks when people are around. Ford the creek rather than walk a kilometre extra up the drainage or balance along a thin log rather than crawl through the devils club to traverse a blowdown. When you are on your own, and before the advent of satellite communication, you tend to think twice about each identifiable risk. Now with relatively cheap satellite communicators we all carry our courage in our backpack 🙂 Therefore I think that human nature actually increases individual risk o injury rather than reduce it when in a group. Only a supposition. I have no data to back this up. 😞
