🤩WOW here is a HUGE kitchen island build. And I’ve got plans available.
czcams.com/video/kr0HLAOUCQ0/video.html
You video is helping millions of kitchen island DIYers still. Simple yet important steps of you work motivate myself to do huge Kitchen island. Many thanks for your skills Bra
Decent 💯
Just bought everything today gonna start building it tomorrow! thank you!
Love all of the explanations!! 💯🔥💯👏🏾
I love this idea. Think I’ll do pretty much the same but use uppers on a step up frame on the other side rather than a bar. With a natural butcher block counter top. Thanks for showing it step by step.
Genius. Gotta save some money on renovating my first house. Definitely doing this project to bring up house value.
I’m no appraiser, but I bet this does add value. What type of renovations are you working on now?
Great frigging idea
Thank you
Thx for this video. Im about to finish my island very identical I took pretty much every single detail from here. Again thank you much.
dude, I am only at 2:30 mins in and I had to stop and say thank you!!
This was a generous share and you did it so imply!!
Thank you!!!!!!
Just finished my island with your plan. Turn out great.
That is awesome!! Glad for your success
Such a great explanation. Just the video I was looking for. My new kitchen is going in mid February and I was thinking of doing just this type of island. Now I have clear directions. Thanks
Awesome! Good luck with your project.
Awesome island! This looks like a high end island. I’m gonna build one just like that one. I got your plans! Thanks for sharing.
Awesome! Glad you got the plans. Good luck on your project
Impressive, that thing looks bombproof!
Thanks! It’s definitely built to last
Wow!!! Thank you sir for sharing this....RESPECT!!
totally doing this and got the cabinets at local restore. Score. They are 4 feet long. Only 2 cabinets. But still pretty sweet!
Heck yeah that is an awesome score!
This looks amazing! You did a good job of simplifying it and making it seem like anyone can do this! Probably save a lot of money in the long run doing this build yourself too
Thank you so much! You can literally save thousands of 💵💵💵. Thanks for watching.
What a versatile and highly practical video! So nice of you to give away the free plans. Super cool Tony! And yes...wanna see the countertop lol.
The ADS Agency thank you so much. Overall, the island was simple to complete. But I felt many people might have a hard time visualizing the step by step. Thanks for watching and here is the countertop video...
czcams.com/video/YCMr5UmwmLs/video.html
Tony great design what are the dimensions. also are the cabinets raised off the floor. i made a wet bar similar in basement , made a big mistake forgot to paint kick plate.
💥 What do you think of this build? What kind of stone too would you put on here? Let me know!💥
Damnnn wish I was that talented, who knew a simple kitchen island would require that much work, cool vid dude!!!
You could do this. Start small and build your skills...just like any hobby. Thanks for watching.
Tony great video. Quick question, how do you make a more contemporary island usually seen in highrise New York kitchens. More of a euro look? Where there is more stone look all around. How do you build that out?
Awesome video! Thank you!
You are welcome
Thanks for sharing this I'm in the process of flooring a floating vinyl floor and understand you aren't suppose to put base cabinets on top of this floor but was thinking I could place this type of island on top of the floating floor. I'm not using a heavy stone top or screwing the island to the concrete foundation. Do you recommend flooring around this island or should I be ok to just set this island on top of the floor? Thanks again for posting this video
I cannot be sure of what the weight of the island could do to the floor in your situation. But if you are not using a heavy top I can’t see where there would be an issue of just putting the island on top of the flooring.
Cool video!
How did you fasten your prefab cabinets to the hardwood floor you have?
L brackets within the cabinet base?
How did you attach the frame to the cabinets?
Looks great..
What did you use on the sides …
One or two sheets of plywood
I’m building the same thing, looks like yours but currently missing the side covering…not sure what exactly you used on the side’s.
I used birch plywood trimmed with pine
Hey I’m new to this but My cabinets are 34.5 so what dimensions on the other pieces do I need to scale down in order to recreate this exact same build? I’ll also be using granite instead of the lighter quartz you have will this be appropriate to hold it or should I add more reinforcements? If so what?
So, standard cabinets are 34.5”. The countertop is typically 1.5” for a total of 36”. So take that into account with the plans I’ve published. This should be similar to what I’ve done here. Also, the granite you are using is the same weight as the quartzite I’ve used (I did not use the lightweight quartz).
Love this! My girlfriend wants one ASAP. What did you attach the plywood to the frame with? Brad nailer or regular screws? Is wood glue needed? Thank you!
I just used 18 gauge brad nails. No wood glue.
Hi, this is pretty cool, great job, also well done and well spoken, keep it up.
Royal 1 Graphics thanks for watching and commenting! Really appreciate the vote of confidence!
Do I need that frame if I don’t have an overhang, or can the cabinet itself support the countertop?
You don’t have to frame exactly this way, but with the overhang you will need some type of support. They make thin metal brackets
amzn.to/3vMF8AX
or you can use corbels
Did you secure the frames to the floor or secure the cabinets together or to the frames? Curious to know
I did not secure the frame to the floor, but you can (and possibly should)...it’s up to you. I did do a video about securing to the floor, here: czcams.com/video/_sW2YlDWoI0/video.html
The cabinets are secured to the frame at the back of the cabinets and into the blocking. I also secured the cabinets together at the sides right under the top.
Nice!!
Thank you
You did a heck of a job. I wish I could do this. You didn’t even need to use Pine. This looks amazing. Thank you for sharing.
Downtown on 7th Avenue Handbag Adventures thank you so much! I promise you would be amazed how easy this is to do. This is another one of those projects that you only really need a couple of inexpensive tools and then just some simple planning. Thank you for watching!
Hi. I just wanna let you know that you did an awesome job on your island table. Its really nice and I like it. My wife and i been wanting to make one but don't really know where to get the cabinets. Only place i know is homedepot and lowes. Any advice of specific place to get the cabinets? But the butcher block i will get it at home decor. Pls need your help. Thanks
I got the cheap oak cabinets at Lowes. Really any cabinet of your choosing will work though
Ok. Thank you.
Hey Tony, I just built my island today. I would like to send you pics of what I have so far. It's looking pretty good. Thanks to your video. Thank you so much man!
That would be awesome! You can send me some pictures to this address tonycollumhowtohero@gmail.com
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Hi Tony, great video and project. I was wondering what size thickness of plywood did you use for the end pieces?
It’s approximately 3/8 (slightly smaller). Thanks for watching
Okay, thanks. Now just one more question with the H-Frame that seems very solid do you recommend a plywood base for a quartz countertop. My project has come out fantastic using your plans. The slab would be approximately 54” deep and 93 3/16” wide? I don’t think it needs it with the solid H-frame but wanted your thoughts. This island base and cabinet looks great and I’m ready for the top. Thanks again.
Rich Seyer, just so I’m clear...you are asking if you need to use plywood (like I did), right? If so, I would say no. In this video I show where the h frame is just sheetrocked. czcams.com/video/WLqxINnmN2o/video.html
I went with plywood for durability but all your strength and stability should come from the frame. Good luck 👍
Thanks Tony for the reply. I am subscribed to your channel and will continue to follow, you made what looks like a complex project simple and easy to follow your steps. I’ll send pictures of the finished project but my wife is amazed and very happy, so life is always better when momma is happy.
Rich Seyer thank you so much! I’m happy to respond when I’m able. This really is a simple project. I’m glad your wife is happy! After all that is what most of this is about! Can’t wait to see the pictures.
This is amazing what was your cost w material
What was the total dimension of the slab of quartz you sat on top of this? I’m thinking going with this same exact size build.
The slab is exactly 72.5” x 51.5”
I tired to get the plana but i didnt receive the emaol. I signes up and got a welcome email but no plans, please help
Thanks for the interest. The server shows that you were sent, and that you opened the welcome message. In that message is a thumbnail of the island and under that is a link that says Download your free kitchen island plans. When you click on that link you should then get the plans. Please let me know if you need further assistance.
Hey Tony, very nice video, could you send me the link of the next video? I can’t find it
Awesomr job, I will be doing something similar
Good luck with your project.
Super idea! new subscriber 👍✌️
Awesome!! Thanks for watching and subscribing!’
Do you screw into your tile or just let it sit on top of the tile?
Great question. I just let mine sit on top of the floor, but you can attach to the floor of your wish.
Code requires electrical outlets if the island is built greater certain sizes. If the island is attached to the hardwood floor to allow for shifting position of the island later, is there a way to run power that can sift with it, at least for short distances, like a few inches or so?
NEC (national electric code) requires at least 1 outlet in the island. As far as a moveable island that allows for moveable electricity…I can’t really imagine a situation where I would need that. I’d want it to be a fixed piece (unless I’m building a mobile island and in that case I’m not putting in an outlet)
Looks incredible! who knew this was even an option. Curious on how you secured the 1x trim to the plywood, did you use nails or wood glue?
Wood glue and brad nails is the best option, I just used brad nails though
What is holding it down? Is it screwed or glued?
In my application, nothing but the weight of the finished unit. And trust me it is heavy enough to keep from moving
How many inches did you leave between the fridge, stove and dishwasher from the island?
Enough space to open the door for the dishwasher and stove…approx 32 inches from that fridge (maybe a bit more)
I been looking for video like this so that i can build my kitchen island, my question to you did u build a island base for it ?
I don’t know if I fully understand the question. I built the entire island but used pre-built cabinets. Make sure you check out my other video where I give away free plans to this island
I’m sorry tony did you anchor the island to your existing floor that what
Meant to say.
@@tonyvee8181 no problem. No, I did not anchor my island down. It’s so big and heavy it takes a deliberate attempt to move it...but it can be moved...so keep that in mind. I wish you luck with your project. And please send pictures of it when it’s complete
Thx tony I will
I really like this video, where can I find the plans?
First of all, Thank you for posting your video. I am in the process of creating my island, but I have a little issue: on the plans, you say to cut the upright braces (10) at 31 to be even with the cabinets. I purchased the cabinets at Lowe's, just as you suggested, but those have a height of 35, so if I cut the braces at 31 and add the side panel top and bottom which are 1 1/2. The total is 34, about 1 1/8 short of what it should be. Don't all cabinets have the same height, or were your shorter? and I just learned that when they say 2X4 it is actually 1 1/2 X 3 1/2. Again, thank you for everything
Nelson Palencia thank you for watching and you are very welcome. So, you should definitely match your sides to the cabinets you purchased. My total height is approx 34” or maybe a bit over...just measured again (you had me worried I put the wrong measurements down 😅). Also, Lowe’s has them on their website at 34.5. But that is a good catch and I will update the plans to reflect the possible differences.
I built all my pieces with the cabinets in place to “match” what I have, and you should do the same. And hopefully this will reduce the chances for variations in the plans to what you actually have (in the event there are some factory differences in the cabinets and the thickness of the lumber).
Yes, a 2x4 is a measurement for the lumber when it is initially sawn from the log. The final product that you purchase is a 1 1/2 x 3 and is the industry standard (pretty much all lumber is sold this way).
To summarize, build your island to match what you have and you will be good. And again, thanks for watching.
I just got a bid for something similar for $8,000. Looks like
its gonna be a DIY!
WOW!! 8k??? I’m gonna be rich!!! But seriously, you can do something just as nice. While this island is a basic setup, building custom cabinets/island is considerably cheaper than 8k and that is including purchasing all the tools. Good luck on your DIY project.
Did you fasten this to your floor somehow or did you just sit it on top. I’m thinking of doing a DIY kitchen island and we are on a slab. Also can’t wait to see the finished product after you paint it.
AMPORA EWING I did not fasten this to the slab. I considered it, but the weight of this thing is pushing 800lbs with the quartzite top. So I decided not to. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to secure it if you think there is even a chance it could be moved. Thanks for watching and I can’t wait to share the finished product...once my wife picks a color😂
Did you put something down under the wood to protect your flooring?
AMPORA EWING no. This is a “permanent” structure. Meaning I don’t plan on moving it and it doesn’t move easily at all. I did this incase we ever wanted to get rid of it...you’d have to know my wife🤷♂️
Lol. Ok.
How did the paint job come out?
Believe it or not...we have not painted it yet. I still think my boss, I mean wife hasn’t picked a color. I’m hoping to get it done this spring.
I loved your video, plans, and how easy you talked through everything. How do you attach the birch wood to the 2X4? Would it be wood glue or nails? I feel like nails would be visible
Thank you for the kind words. I mailed the plywood around the perimeter so it would be hidden by the 1x trim boards. The only thing you have to fill then is the nail holes in the trim. I use an 18 gauge trim nailer
I've looked for the plans and cant find a way to download them.
Here is the video where I give out the free plans (link in description)
Custom Kitchen Island Build | PLANS | Tony Collum the HOW-TO HERO czcams.com/video/XFiEF2rb818/video.html
Hi how are you I did the instructions that u asked and but I dint get nothing.
Thanks for watching. It shows that you were sent the welcome message (check your spam folder).
Would the dimensions for this frame and same counters work for a 74x35 butcher block counter?
I would suggest downloading the free plans and then adjust everything as needed. When I built this island it is approx 5x4...but I have had many people reach out to me and show me their modified setups using the plans. Good luck and I cannot wait to see the finished product!
@@TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO thank you. I have downloaded the plans. This will be an interesting project for me. I’ve never done one like this before, but my boyfriend has challenged me so of course I need to do it 😳😂. I just need it to be prefect! Thanks again for responding.
You can do it!
@@TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO what type of screws did you use? I don’t believe I saw these listed on the material list.
@@barbararodriguez7 I used what I had laying around ...3” exterior screws on the 2x4 skeleton, 1.5” screws (I believe either Sheetrock screw or Kreg screws) to mount the cabinets to the frame, and 18 ga. Brad nails to add the outer plywood and the trim boards.
You don’t have to be real particular as long as whatever you use, does the job.
When you say one by for plywood, do you mean 1” thick? Thanks.
Yes 1x means 1” thick.
I used 11/32 plywood and a wainscotting on top
How could I work a sink and dishwasher into the island
That would require a little different setup than what this island was intended to cover. For the sink part you would just buy a cabinet made for.a sink (has the false drawer front and typically a double door) on the dishwasher side you would need to omit one cabinet and keep the framed leg to create a “void” for the dishwasher. It would take a little more planning, but it’s not far off from this design
How did you secure it to the floor?
I didn’t. Secure it. The side and weight keep it from being (easily) moved
We are in the middle of doing ours, with the same cabinet. We are also going with an "H" shape but we did a 18 in a 30in and a 18in. And on the back we did the 12in wall cabinet so ther 12in Deep Instead of the 24in, 1 on each side. So we can have a to tears. This is another reason we bought a wall cabinet and not just a cabinet.
Cool. Pretty good idea using the wall cabinets! Good luck with the build and I’d love to see the finished product. I’ll be posting a video of the island top install in the next couple of days. Thanks for watching!
@@TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO I'm looking forward to that video. You did a great job.
Thank you so much! I really enjoyed the project. Glad you did too.
Great vid! I subscribed!
How did you connect the cabinets together?
The cabinets attach at the back (frame) and on the upper insides of the cabinets (where it’s hidden) I used screws to attach the sides of the cabinets Together.
Have you painted it yet? Trying to convince my wife ot let me build it inside and then paint. Are you (did you) going to paint the insides of the cabinets??
Unfortunately I have not painted it yet. But I do plan to. I will not be painting the insides (except the doors).
Love the video but I can't get the download after subscribing can you give me email or another way to get the plans. Thanks for your help.
I just checked and it shows you were sent the welcome message. Check your spam folder for the email (I’ve had several people have this issue) and In that email you will find the link. Let me know!
@@TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO i just checked and signed up with 2 other emails (gmail and hotmail) same thing. I also just sent you a direct email to your gmail address for this channel asking the same question. Is there a way you can send to me? I appreciate your help
💥💥Check out the #Quartzite countertop install!!💥💥 czcams.com/video/YCMr5UmwmLs/video.html
I thought you were going to actually show step-by-step what you did the talking is not giving me a visual . a lot of people like what you do, it does look nice but for me it’s not helping me to build one
More frame structure will be stronger
ome emo thanks for the feedback. You are correct a beefed up frame would be stronger. For my use This thing is pretty strong especially with the wood panels and cabinets. This thing is super solid!
How much did this project cost you?
Not counting the quartzite, about $600. The stone itself was about $1600 if I remember correctly
Hello, i heard that its against regulations, if an island doesnt have a power outlet. That it is a safety hazard
Not a safety hazard. However, it could be a code requirement depending on the jurisdiction. The outlet in the island is a convenience outlet to prevent someone from needing to use a drop cord. But honestly, our island is more of an entertainment spot than a meal cooking spot. We know that off we need an outlet we just turn and put it on the countertop
I'm seeing more and more cheap empty kitchen cabinets, wondering if I can just go ahead and buy a countertop
Where is part 2?
WHERE IS THE FINISHED PRODUCT? Trying to show show my wife before I begin tomorrow but perhaps I missed it in another video.
Alright alright hiiihaaa 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
🔥💥Ok, I’m giving away the free plans for this island, here:
czcams.com/video/XFiEF2rb818/video.html. 🔥💥
Tony Collum the HOW-TO HERO I love these plans but was wondering your thoughts on using the sink base 60" cabinet and building a U-shape frame behind the cabinet instead of H. Reason being the framing on the sides of the cabinet would make the overall size too large for my kitchen and would like to use the 60" to save $$ and maximize the storage space.
Wondering if you think this type of framing would be sufficient for a granite top. Thank you in advance!
(My island would be floating)
Heather Mella the great thing about building an island like this is that you can modify it however you wish. Now , to answer your question...
You need to do your homework with the weight and the ability for the base to support it. To help you make the decision, kitchen cabinets are usually standalone units that support the granite top. You may find that you need more blocking at the top of the cabinets (just under the granite top) whether it is front to back or side to side, to add more strength. Plus it sounds like you are going to build an additional support piece and that will bear some of the weight.
There is so much to think about in this build and I hope you are able to build the island you want. Doing it yourself can be intimidating, but research and learn as much as possible.
Thanks for watching!
hmmmmm..........Wife couldn't make her mind.......that has never happened to me............
It’s a constant battle, right?
2500 ? Sounds like Lowe’s ripped you off . You must of paid 2000 just for counter top cause the cabinets don’t cost that much.
😂😂😂...yeah I mention that in the videos. Cabinets and lumber for framing approx $400-$500 and the the quartzite was approx $1600. Then add any paint, trim, and hardware you decide. $2000-$2500 is a good round about cost for an island this size.
Appreciate that it's somewhat custom but you didn't actually build the cabinet you just bought cabinets and added a back to them.
That’s why the video is titled custom kitchen island and not custom kitchen cabinets. Custom means you cannot go and buy it from the store…thanks for watching!
Your island cabinet doors dont match your kitchen cabinet doors.
That is true. Doors can be changed at any time though.
lol. you coild buy one at that price
I’m sure you could buy something for $600 but it won’t be this size with this structure. A quick check at Lowe’s or Home Depot at their “pre built” kitchen island at approx half this size...$2500. The top you choose is what pushes the price up on this particular build. I can also rip these cabinets out and build custom built ins. Thanks for the feedback!
Bootleg Peloton
I guess you could ride it like a bike if you want. But I don’t offer any subscriptions right now.
Tony Collum the HOW-TO HERO my bad. That’s was for another an add that played during your video. Sorry. Nice job tho.
Thanks man!!! It’s all good, I just wanted to have a little fun. Thanks for watching and good luck if you are looking to build an island.
I very rarely comment but this is not a great video
Yeah, it’s kind of like the sex education video we were forced to watch in the 7th grade...poorly produced, a little uncomfortable, but it gets the point across and the beginners can still get something accomplished if they follow the directions.
