    Great video! I'd keep the Aputure. It may not be "industry standard" but your test demonstrates it currently functions better, which'll save time. When you save time, you save money. You made a great point at the end too. Owning every piece of kit possible isn't a sustainable business model. It really only makes sense to own the gear you'll use on a regular basis. It's worth investing in the essentials, especially if you're green so you can practice and hone skills in preparation for paid gigs. But for stuff you only use a few times a year, utilize rental houses and factor it into your rate. That's my two cents anyway haha.

    I feel like as long as you know the limitations of the Cream Source, depending on the project it can help achieve a "look" in camera, whether more prominent and achieving a Matrix vibe, or more likely, again, using it in the background. I know when I'm grading my footage I tend to separate skin tones and warmer colors from the rest of the image, specifically to push the greens and blues a little more green, while still preserving healthy skin tones. Having the Cream Source in the background and usinging a Nova or a COB light as a key would already push that look into the footage.

    Great video as always Justin!
    Even though the Cream is 15 years old and has really been used on big sets, I doubt that it was used as a key light, or in any situation where color rendition matters (they would've used Tungsten fixtures or maybe an Arri SkyPanel at the time for that). Considering the extremely strong green/yellow cast, they were probably used to light green screens, or as an ''fx'' light/fluorescent ''enhancer'' or something. Maybe to shoot some disturbing scenes, SAW style when the goal is to disgust the audience lol but I've seen street lights with better color rendition! The output is insane though :P
    HAPPY NEW YEAR to DTP!

    Is there a correction gel that could help that color cast and still have decent output?

    • @jacksonpetit1212
      @jacksonpetit1212 Před 6 měsíci +1

      Was thinking the same. Considering the output it's worth to just have a few sheets of minus green gels and some CTOs as well when needed.

    • @dudepersonvids
      @dudepersonvids Před 5 měsíci +1

      No, that's actually not possible (except maybe theoretically with a very precisely engineered gel that would cut maybe 2-3 stops of light in the first place.)
      This is because R9, the part of the red spectrum in the tests that's very important for skintones, is very, very low. Gels can only cut out parts of the visible spectrum, and since that color is nearly absent from the light, gels could not add that part of the spectrum back.
      I mean, you could try some minus green, and maybe 1/8 CTB to get it closer to 5600K. But it still won't look right on human faces or anything red.

    I like creamsource as a brand, but I never got any chance to have some discount, or proper partnership with them. And seeing the results, I am impressed by this Aputure. I got a few 120Ds and I never was a big fan. My LED Kino is something else, I love it!

    Isn’t it all about SSI?
    That’s why the Amaran s series is so great. Even though the build quality is not necessarily professional grade and built in v mounts are missing, the SSI scores are crazy high and impressive
    Same for the Ifootage anglerfish series, and the zolar panel lights

    • @JustinPhillip

      SSI is spectral similarity. Thats just a comparison to other lights.

  • @tptrsn
    @tptrsn Před 5 měsíci

    This video is confusing to me. The images made sense to me in that the tint of the creamsource light seemed to be way over toward green, which I thought matched the CRI charts where that light was way down on red (and also the lavender and magenta color bars). But then in the RGB parade, it seemed to be showing overly red... Confusing.

    I'm in the process of down scaling as well. While I have a lot of grip gear, I find that I'm really only using my 4x4 mat lights, the two Nanlite FS-300s for lighting through windows and some of the Zhiyun or Nanlite 60s's for fill and hair lights. I'm not really bringing all the big heavy panels or my super heavy Aputure COB lights these days if I can help it. Occasional I'll bring my two foot tube light kit, but it depends on the gig. If I need a 600 or a 1200, that's a rent now-a-days.

    The R9 is the worst I've ever seen!! Still def worth keeping it just to use it as light through a window. Crazy output!!! As per other comments, maybe a correction gel? I have also just acquired a used C800 from Gaffer and Gear and I'm crazily and obsessively checking every light source I see.
