  • This video shows best practices for communicating effectively during a telemedicine visit, including making/maintaining eye contact (which is not as straight forward as it seems) and minimizing external distractions. Also included are practical tips on what makes for a professional setup and background, as well as ideal camera positioning.
This video is for research only. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology does not endorse products. Be sure to consult your state and local HIPAA and telehealth regulations as they may differ across the country. A practitioner should also be aware of the limitations of taking a physical exam while using a video platform. This approach will not be the ideal solution for all patient encounters, but it is one tool to consider to meet the needs of your practice and your patients.

Hey! Thank-you for sharing such great information. Healthcare providers should note these points while consulting their patients online. These things can be really helpful for a provider as well as for a patient as this shows professionalism.

Hi! Great video! I was wondering if you could cite the source of the study regarding practitioners being directly in front of a door, and how that's not ideal.

Hi! Great information! Are you allowed to stay abroad during the time of working as a telemedicine MD?

I am reluctant to use telemedical consultation, as I am not sure how effective it will be in diagnosing my medical condition. Patients must be assured that medical practitioners are trained to do so.

This is a great episode and covers a lot of the relevant points, however if you are after more tips to improve your webside manner - feel free to watch this episode that highlights poor webside manner and shows you how to improve it: czcams.com/video/uC_gmmoGvWY/video.html

I found this level of hand & arm movements are so distracting, eye contact and listening are much harder, particularly for me as I am hard of hearing and trying to read lips as well as read closed captions.

If a doctor is only gonna do a video visit they aren't a good doctor. Especially if it's a new patient. There is so much you're not going to know over a video as opposed to doing it yourself. It's bad enough that many patients already feel like they are on a assembly line with doctors rushing appointments.
