  • Hey everybody! Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords Of Saxon. I've had a number of requests for Saxon and this episode kicks off Metal Month during the month of October on the LNL channel - so grab your battle axe and let's dive in!
Saxon are legends of The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal that exploded during the late 1970s/early 1980s, alongside other important groups from that era - including legends such as Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Diamond Head, Budgie, and many more!
The chord-based and rhythm guitar examples in this lesson came from four classic Saxon albums and include tracks such as Never Surrender, Strong Arm Of The Law, Dallas 1PM, Princess Of The Night, Wheels Of Steel, 747 (Strangers In The Night), Crusader, and more!
Needless to say, if you're a Saxon fan, a fan of early metal groups, a player looking for some new chord ideas to stick in their bag of tricks, or maybe you've been waiting for more Metal Month lessons since last October - this episode is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

Hey! Lovely to see Budgie, one of my favourite bands, get a namecheck-why haven’t they had some time on your excellent channel? They had crunching riffs and delicate acoustic pieces-but they were well before the NWOBHM, nor did they consider themselves a Metal band, so you can’t really include them in that list. A wonderful day to all.

Great video Dave! Saxon was one of my first metal influences back when I was starting with metal as a teenager in 1983-84. Denim and Leather is my favorite Saxon album. So glad you covered Princess of the Night. One of the first metal songs I ever heard. Also Never Surrender. I just wish you could do a little more of the other songs on that album, they're all great, great riffs, but also some great solos, so it would be awesome if you did entire songs in the future, like Fire in the Sky, And the Bands Played On, and Denim and Leather. Thanks man, keep it up, love your channel, you rock!

I remember seeing them on MTV early 80s. Thought they were pretty cool metal for the day. I want to say they had one guitarist that had his guitar on a swivel like on his belt buckle so he could swing it to spin like a fan blade. It looked trippy. no one was doing that, or since. idk

Strong arm of the law is one of my favorite tunes by Saxon but there are many. Saxon is the most important bands that never made it big in America. Most people domestically do not know Saxon, sadly, even though they were huge in England and parts of Europe (Germany). Doug Scarratt added a more modern metal sound on certain albums since 90s, IMO. Also, some of their more recent stuff is outstanding, Battering Ram and their most recent album, Carpe Deim, come to mind. Saxon opened for both Rush and Triumph in the early 80s. Thanks for the great lesson. I requested Saxon at least 10 times.

About blew out my speakers in my ‘74 Chevy Luv truck back in very early ‘80’s playing “ Stayed awake all night “ while on top of San Diego Civic center parking structure at after midnight a couple of times in my youth…. Got the cops called on us a few times for “ Disturbing the peace “ as my truck had a sleeper shell on bed and 1200 watts of 3 amplifier and dual crossover 10 speaker system in it at the time ( 😁). Used to rattle the high rises in the area in wee hours of the morning. Loved Saxon back then, along with a bunch of other bands . Thanks David for another great video here 😎👍

Brilliant ,I've been listening to a lot of Saxon while browsing the Net and this Video popped up,I think you have got the songs right, a bit of Cat Scratch Fever here and there, I did see them Live twice in the 90's .In 1978 the 10th Anniversary Tour of Black Sabbath, support band Van Halen? who did not turn up but Diamond Head did weird, now Brian Tatler is in Saxon . by the way a new Single and Album yes another one great.

Great lessons as always my friend. The first band I ever saw live, right here in my hometown of Sheffield. In many ways the reason I ended up wanting to play guitar too. I've had the pleasure of meeting Graham Oliver and him and his family all seem like really super lovely people. Saxon and Def Leppard grew up and started out within 10 miles of each other and both helped get that NWOBHM movement on the road.

Love Saxon … my favorite band from that era … I’ve seen them live so many times and met them as well several times … They actually opened for Iron Maiden me 38 Special in 1983 … Princess of the Night was the first video I saw from Saxon on MTV back in 1981 … That song is played with down strokes and really fast … try playing along with the recording for accurate tempo … Paul is playing the main riff and Graham is playing single notes … so hard to play at tempo 😎 … thanks for the trip down memory lane David … led me to dragging my guitar out of the closet and playing those riffs again … 😎
