This desperately needs some STEREO options. Ways to do some stereo widening and ways to control the space of the grains, to separate the behavior of the left and right channels.
People using the plugin for things you hadn't even thought of is the sign of a good product. It must have versatility, which is a strong plus point for any tool. I think I'll be buying this, and I've already thought of some things I'd like to try it out on. Well done!
When I saw your email announcement of this, I purchased it immediately (hadn’t even gotten out of bed yet 😂🤦♂️) cuz I had a gut feeling I’d love it. It’s such a fun and cool plugin. I’ve already used it on a couple of tracks I’m working on, and for the record, it sounds super cool on a trumpet! Thanks for all you do for creative musicians!
Nice, and well worth the introductory price that I just paid for it. You and Cameron have come up with some wonderful ideas over the years, and you're both obviously quite skilled at what you do. I've seen some of your videos on how to create a Decent Sampler instrument, but somehow I always get a little lost in the coding or sample preparation along the way. I wonder if you would ever consider creating a step-by-detailed-step course for old hippies like myself, using Reaper and some basic coding guidance, which would enable even complete newbies to go from zero to almost hero in Decent Sampler instrument creation. Maybe I'm asking too much, but it's something I'd be willing to pay for, and maybe there are others out there who feel the same way: you can let David and Cameron know in the comments. ;-)
I already loved the sounds that your plugin made, but now having you explain how it works makes me want it even more. I’ve got my eyes on a 1980s yamaha synth on marketplace and I think I’ll buy both, I can already see (hear) that they’ll go well together. Congratulations, beautiful work!
That's so cool! I've been waiting for this video ever since seeing Refractions start to appear in your videos; I wasn't sure it was for me but boy was I wrong, it looks (and sounds, duh!) great. Also, if you ever wanted to make an in-depth video/series about writing plugins with Juce, I'd probably even pay for that. Keep up the great work David, and thanks.
Ah, this is really nice and inspiring, awedome!! The sound pallet in your demos reminds me a lot of what I hear coming out of the hologram electronics Microcosm pedal. As opposed to that pedal, though, which comes across as a bit of a black box magic machine, it actually makes sense what is going on in your plugin with the different parameters and how it relates to the sound scapes. I feel like your plugin sits in a very sweet spot between intentionality and happy accidents.
Thank you so much, David! Got the plugin this morning and I’m loving it ❤ my ten year old and I even made a quick song with it this evening. Super fun 🎉
Right after I hit send on this post, I will buy, download, and then explore. Congrats and thank you! I can wait to see what you will create for all of us home base producers next.
This is useful! It's tough to find good stuff in the over-saturated plugin market. The non-stop barrage of plugins turned me off, so I don't buy them anymore and let the DAWless stuff get the most use. This is nice, though.
I started learning music production as a hobby a couple of months ago and have been watching a lot of CZcams guides mostly related to psy trance and techno since that's my main focus at the moment. For some reason the CZcams algorithm decided I should watch this particular video after I had a couple of drinks tonight, and even though it had nothing in particular to do with the music I've been focusing on I liked the sound so you can thank The Algorithm for at least one of your sales tonight.
This seems oddly like it overlaps the chase bliss reverse mode c (the reverse up an octave line at the end) but as a plug-in vs an effects pedal. I really enjoyed seeing how it evolved!
This is really Off Topic, but i've watched quite a couple of your videos lately and just realized you were involved in the creation of Chile la Roja for the 2010 World Cup!! Im from Chile and i really really loved it! I hadnt listened to it in years and it brings back so many good memories!
Very nice plugin, just bought it and spent two hours enjoying how pads can be transformed (oh the random function...) in super good inspiring softly rhythmic sounds. Applause!
Wow. Great work, man. Constantly impressed with you and Venus Theory. I’ve committed to sticking with free plugins unless theres a practical application that I need to find without a free option. This is something that absolutely has utility and I love supporting the creative community. I’m gonna jump on this one!
Thanks for going over your workflow building plugins, it's always interesting to see how people approach these technical aspects of making music(-tools). Do you always immediately build your plugin ideas in JUCE or do you use something like Max MSP for the first prototypes?
Any plans on adding an AUv3 version for ipadOS? I’m slowly moving away from using my mac and while ipad is a great place to make music rn, innovative plugins like this are the lifeblood of the platform. I can imagine using this in Drambo, modulating all the parameters with LFOs and noise. Could be fun!
Seems like a very interesting plugin, it reminds me to the things the Microcosm fx pedal could do only on a totally different way. My only problem is that I cannot get my head around how I am able to mix this with my midi synths or does this only work for samples in my DAW? I don't understand how it would receive the incoming audio signal (yet). Really curious to see where this is going, keep up the creativity in 2024!
@@mooseyard Thanks for the info. Would that work with a multitrack mixer? It would be a great reason to finally try and get Firewire to work in Windows 10
did I just record a single guitar drone note with an E-Bow, processed with Refractions and some SoundToys effect? Yes I did... Thanks for all the hard work!
Hi Dave! I *adore* these effects (and your work overall) and bought the plugin. I can’t seem to make it work, is there a trouble shooting guide somewhere? Also, I’m new to the synth world so it could be user error - I understood this to be a standalone program so maybe that’s where I went wrong? I’m using the same Keystep you use in this video and it’s hooked up to my computer.
It's not a standalone program. I don't have this (yet) but my understanding is you'll need to use a Digital Audio Workstation with an instrument loaded, and feed the output of that into Refractions.
Maybe add a feature that randomizes the pattern from the list after going through it once or twice. I once had a lot of fun using ableton's randomizer with arpeggios to make me feel like I could play a sick guitar solo without effort lol
David, great video and plugin! Just wondering, where did you learn JUCE? Do you have a degree in computer engineering or something? I tried it once but found it very hard to understand for someone like me with little DSP knowledge. Also, try getting this made in a pedal form for guitarists and live keyboardists, it might be just perfect for some people
This started out reminding me of some of the modes of the Microcosm pedal, but you’ve added a lot more direct control. I’m a C++ programmer too, but I’m thinking you could probably have done this in a tiny fraction of the time by using Max or PD, which are specialized languages for audio coding. I don’t know either one myself, but probably even having to learn the language up front would end up being faster. Another question: why does the plug-in need post effects like delay/reverb? Can’t you just chain DAW effects after it?
Wow. Is there a chance something like this might find its way to Push 3. It doesn't do VST's but it does to M4L. Btw I'm a month late to this party. Is there any chance you might reset the clock? I've been a subscriber for a while yet I can't recall your notification.
Hi David, Purchased this earlier and wanted to bring a potential problem to your attention. I'm using it in reaper and for the life of me I couldn't figure out why I couldn't get it to work at first. Every time I tried turning it on with a mic plugged in, it was immediately triggering my "auto mute" function (sound over +18db). Eventually, I disabled the auto-mute and set my headphones on the table in front of me (hah) launched it again and found it was in fact making a reaaaaally loud sound. I figured out it *seems* to be the default setting of the lowpass filter being at max. Once I go into the advance tab, lower the filter, and start monitoring again, it works fine (ie doesnt cause an extremely loud sound/trigger the auto mute) even if I put the filter back upt to max after, but I do have to do this each session I want to use the plug-in. This may just be a Reaper issue, I haven't tried it with any other DAW's yet, but just wanted to bring it up as the auto-mute definitely saved my ears. Now that i've got it working, can't wait to dive in more and play with it- really awesome work!!!
This plugin looks super, *super* cool. Just wondering, does it come with free updates or will major updates cost money to upgrade? I can only really afford the introductory price for the foreseeable future
Coincidentally last week I could get a friend of mine interested in sound design with the (toyish but great) Ableton synth intro course website. From my own experience (and yours, it turns out) it is more fun when you have some sequence, arpeggio or even one tone *) running while you experiment or work with the knobs and sliders. However, would I discourage my friend with having to install a DAW or even buy a MIDI keyboard (and audio interface) to start playing with some standalone synths? **). So I went looking for a decent simple (intuitive) standalone foolproof sequencer. To my surprise there hardly aren't any (anymore, I would not advise a noob installing fifteen-twenty year old apps). I also tried some VST hosts, but they require some entry level and some skills/attitude to programs, settings, installing etc. When I saw the thumbnail of this video I was struck, this is exactly what i was looking for! The sequencer part that is. I do not intend to insult you, and am aware I might, but I think it would be great when the sequencer part could be turned into a standalone sequencer you could use to play with (free) standalone VSTs to get people started with sound design? *) my Akai LPK25 does both last ones, the Keystep does sequences (I have one but I never use it, if feels to clinical to me). **) I found the terms used often confusing: in my opinion a plugin requires a host (DAW or alike) and is by definition not standalone. About yours I'm no sure, seems to work standalone, but does not explicitly say so in the description but does so in the versions history.
The ability to just turn any audio into an arpeggio in real time seems kind of trivial at first. But the utility is pretty apparent once you start demonstrating it. You could achieve something similar with a sampler, but it would be pretty tedious to cut up a sample and arrange on the keyboard every time you want to do that. If you want to change the source sound, you have to start all over. This plugin eliminates all that just does it in real time. Nice work and great idea!
I love to watch someone who is great at music. It is even better when this someone is great at telling you stories with valuable information. When this person is evidently highly intelligent, it gets just incredible to enjoy. David is such a gem for all of us
That is roughly the same time to make a human so this must be good
“I’ve done it faster” - Victor Frankenstein, probably
@@michaelthompson2363 No, it took several lifetimes to make the monster (one for each source person/animal). :)
@@gutterg0d Took a lifetime to form the monster that was Viktor Frankenstein as well!
the most impressive thing is creating that prototype that works perfectly in only two hours. Pretty good coding.

You’d run the synth's audio out into your computer and assign it to an audio track in the DAW. Then add this plugin as an effect to that channel.
