Racing Versus Cruising Sailors

  • Cruising sailors tend to prefer things like swimming from their boat;
    Racing sailors prefer the water on top of their boat instead;
    They will spend as much money on sails as their boat is worth;
    They will sail so close together you could jump to the next boat;
    They will remove their dodger so they can fully enjoy all that water on top of their boat;
    They will crawl onto a pitching foredeck to lash down a sail because they don’t have a furler;
    They will climb onto the boom to install a reef line so they don’t have to slow the boat down;
    They will fly a spinnaker in 20 knots of wind or more;
    They won’t even bother taking down their own spinnaker, and will just let God do it;
    And they will do all of this whether it’s day or night, regardless of whether they can see or not;
    All for getting their boat’s name engraved on some stupid trophy, and getting some yellow flags to boast about their accomplishments, and for some unforgettable moments with friends - priceless!!!

      LOL - I totally agree! The only people who really buy into the “I don’t care about that last 0.25 knot” are the slow boat manufacturers trying to rationalize their products. Exactly! One of my most memorable "God decides" moments was flying the symmetric S4 in a building breeze on my heavy monohull. We were doing 10-12 knots steady through the water, and the wind indicator read 25 from dead astern (i.e. the true wind was over 30). We had to sail slightly by the lee for about half a mile to clear Race Rocks. It was also in the middle of the night so we felt it was too dangerous to gybe, and of course the boat started to death roll. The oscillations got bigger and bigger until the helmsperson had the rudder all the way over to the lock and said "That's all there is boys!!!" as the mast plummeted towards the water. We braced for a massive wipeout, but somehow the rudder didn't stall, the boat stood up, and we were able to head up slightly as we passed Race Rocks. Thankfully God decided not to take our spinnaker down at that point!!!

    Forgot one item for weather. It is just not the best day to sail so it's a good day to race. The bob and bake is a race favorite. A race boat will drift in 95° sunshine for an hour barely making way praying for a wisp of wind. The flies love the human banquet. After all, the humans need to sit still because weight and balance are everything in light air. You kind of had coverage of it's blowing snot sideways so let's put up more sail. I’m a cruiser, with cruiser friends and I’m dying to race, as I have friends who have already attended a few races as crew and won. Frankly, I’m finding most of the local cruisers I encounter in my area don’t know their rudder from their keel, and I’m starting to get desperate for more experience/skills when it comes to sailing. I’m a strong believer there’s always something new to learn, and I definitely have plenty to learn when it comes to racing. I’ve singlehanded a few boats with friends onboard just watching and had them keeled over going fast as hell while steering with a tiller.
    I’m ready for a challenge, and I miss the adrenaline anyways.

If the mast is keeled and the headsails are keeled academic stem to stern the boat does not have to heel The boat can sail top speed without heeling.. The deepest point of the hull should be the stem between the mast and forestay and have lateral resistance that is related to the sail area. A headsail that is two booms forward would have three times as much lateral resistance as the mast at the mast. On keel.

    Cruisers sail around the world. Racers sail around a buoy. Cruisers take pleasure in adventure, are pragmatic and then they have a beer and enjoy life. Racers take everyday stress life with them to the sea. Cruisers smile to you and are very helpful. Racers are arrogant bullies when they sail in tight waters with other boaters. I would trust a cruiser any day before I trust a racer including skills. Cruiser’s are often very experienced and have a healthy respect for the force of nature. Racers are like crow’s, they do anything for a shiny object and they are proud of it.

    • @SailingTipsCa
      @SailingTipsCa  Před 2 lety +4

      Frank, tell me what you really think about racers LOL!!! Actually I think both camps are filled with all kinds of people, with all kinds of goals, skills, and objectives. Half the racers I know have raced 2,000+ NM to Hawaii, or 650+ NM around Vancouver Island or to Ketchikan in the R2AK, and half the cruisers I know don't dare set foot on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. There's also a local boat crewed by a combination of racers and cruisers navigating the Northwest Passage at this very moment, so your characterization of racers staying in protected waters and cruisers being skilled adventurers doesn't necessarily play out in my world. I also know lots of racers who have used incredible seamanship to rescue other boaters. Unfortunately some racers are also arrogant bullies, which is unfortunate and gives everybody a bad name!!!
