Varun Soundararajan G S Rajan ji plays Carnatic music on a Bansuri and NOT on a venu, but he has done his own customising on the Bansuri for playing Carnatic music.
rishishenoy GS Rajan is my guru and the only living flute exponent of the saraba shastri bani. He plays the 6 holes flute otherwise called bansuri with a gear to produce the lower gandharam. His style is also unique as it involves deep understanding of music and gamaka aspects and difficult to follow and produce. His music is breathtaking!

But Rajan ji is playing it in F# scale by keep the 2 holes closed position as sa (as opposed to 3 holes closed position of Sa which is hindustani style). 2 holes closed sa is Carnatic style of flute playing. There's not much difference in both techniques, it's just that each method suits the style of music it plays. We can do vice versa also. There's no hard and fast rules as long as correct sound can be reproduced.
