    The first PRS SE McCarty 594 I tried had a dodgy fret, so that one is going back, but I wanted to try another to give it a fair shake - this one from ‪@PeachGuitars‬ is VERY clean.

    The original McCarty guitars were designed at the request of David Grissom by adding a slightly thicker back for more depth in tone. It evolved into the DGT after they built David a McCarty w a trem. The 594 using the four knobs and high selector switch came in the wake of them building their single cut guitars.

      Which one would you choose between this or a DGT?
      I am trying to choose between these two models and I think your opinion would help me.

    • @chrispygingerpie
      @chrispygingerpie Před 2 měsíci

      @@rommelprz7I tried both today side by side, I had played the 594 a few weeks ago. I preferred the 594, it’s lighter and I felt the thickness of the neck suited the slightly shorter scale length.
      The dgt I played was slightly darker sounding than the 594, I get the 594 was more classic LP sounding. However these are all minor changes (apart from weight). Just more what switching you prefer and if you want a trem. Try to test them both at the same time.

    some of the 'very many' songs done by the talented and gifted Phil Keaggy ...albums going
    way back to the 70's 80's 90's and so on ! Listen to one song called 'Happy' all the way through ... very nice indeed !

    Picked up an SE 594 singlecut standard ... first humbucker guitar. Was looking to get a humbucker guitar for years but nothing seemed to meet the price point till now. Been playing fender telecasters for over 20 yrs. Blown away. Paid less for this than for a tele 20 yrs ago. Quality is way better. Just amazing. All my fenders are in their cases, this is all I've been playing. Similar to my experience when I picked up a boogie markV 35. Its the fender amp I always wanted and way higher quality on all levels. Given the price point of these I'll probably pick up an SE DGT as well.

      I have a similar experience. I’ve played Tele’s for 20 years. In 2019 I had sold my last Telecaster and wanted a humbucking guitar. I bought a PRS Custom 24 SE Roasted Maple and also switched my amplifier to a Vox AC-15c1. It is the best thing I’ve done for my playing and tone. Musical midrange with chiming, sparkling high end and defined percussive lows. I have a modest pedalboard with Keeley, Xotic and Peterson pedals. I have my sound. Cheers.🇺🇸

    We certainly know that the SE 'McCartney' 594 is a true winner ! What Gibson did years ago on the Les Paul looks and sound and playability ... well it really just cannot be beat !
    Clarity and tone is what you are hearing ! John , you and Bryan Ewald (PRS specialist) are a treat to listen to . Ya'll do have the playing style and ability ... much like the talented and gifted Phil Keaggy shines through on many of his fabulous albums produced over the years past ! Just before the holidays PRS offered a 1 time run of the 58/15 LT pups made in Maryland USA. They were pricey, $500 USD, but I got a small discount and bought a set. My plan is to buy a 594 SE and rewire it using the same pups as the core models. There is a PRS dealer 100 miles from me that has 18 594's in stock. I'm just waiting for enough time to drive there and select one in person. If that guitar does not meet my expectations, I'll remove the pups, and an "S" model 594 is next, although I'll probably play both first. They use the "import" pups in the S model also. I don't understand that but whatever.. LOL. Thanks for the insight! --gary

  • @GuvnaOnSpotify
    @GuvnaOnSpotify Před rokem +3

    The other main difference (that almost no one mentions) between this (and almost every PRS) and the DGT is that the DGT has a "less wide" fret board (1 21/32"). Most other PRS's are 1 11/16" - its only a 32nd of an inch difference, but it makes a difference. I find it challenging to the more complex open chords cleanly due to the size of my fingers on a DGT, with no problem on a board that is 1 11/16ths. Worth keeping in mind if you have fingers like mine 🙂

      @@xx-----------xx873 I always find this interesting when it comes up. I own a mid-eighties Squier Strat, maple neck and rosewood fingerboard I've had for around 30 years. A few years ago I swapped out the neck for a Carvin replacement I had lying around, maple with ebony fingerboard. The change in the upper-mids of the guitar tone was small, but quite noticeable as I'd been playing this guitar for years. PRS himself has often said that everything that goes into the guitar makes a contribution to the output. Otherwise I guess he'd just be making doors with necks.

    • @xx-----------xx873
      @xx-----------xx873 Před rokem

      @@roaringscot PRS has a financial interest in proving wood makes a difference, maybe he doesn't get that he'd sell the same number of guitars if he just said they were functional artwork.
      Changing the neck probably reduced the distance between the string and the pickup, and that likely caused the change. Or perhaps the strings were from a better batch. You'd get a bigger difference from removing the tone knob.
      I did the same experiment myself, I had a rosewood necked strat style guitar with Lollar pickups and swapped the neck with a chinese maple scalloped one. After adjusting pickup height they sounded the same when recorded. That was enough for me.

      @@xx-----------xx873 Really? I’ve never seen “better sounding wood” listed as an up charge option. I do see big up charges based on finish and look of the wood. In fact once you go past a standard core model to the insanely expensive ones the differences are all about aesthetics and can double or triple the price. I think the real tone wood myth is that people are paying more for better sounding wood. People pay more for what they think is better looking wood or finishes.

    Personally I find the clean tones on both these PRS guitars rather bland and lacking character when compared to the fender single coil guitars. Humbucker tones are excellent though.
    I wonder which of these PRS' is a better all round workhorse, with better single coil tones. can't wait for the comparison video mate.
    PS - your videos help a lot in narrowing down the guitar choice, especially living in India as both online and retail stores don't stock on these guitars, they're only available on order, not enough demand and the return policy is shite. So thanks for these videos. Helps me make a more informed decision 🙏
    I wonder if you'd be interested in comparing the single coil tones of the Sire T7 and one of these PRS'. just a thought

      That's a good point about split coil mode. I own a core DGT and I bought it for the humbucker tones. I appreciate the flexibility that I can get away with single coil tones in a one guitar live situation, but it's not a classic strat tone.

    I found the neck very thick and reminiscent of a '59 Les Paul. The frets are tall and fairly thin...excellent for bending but not so great for sliding. It's a beefy guitar. The tuners are disappointing.

    Why the "4"?
    The default blurb is that 594 comes from the 24.594" scale length. But each string has a slightly different scale length, and can be intonated, so stating the scale length the nearest thou is BS.
    Clearly this model has a "59" vibe, so that bit I get. But why the "4"?

    • @johnnathancordy
      @johnnathancordy  Před rokem +1

      Source: Music Radar -
      It takes its name, primarily, from its scale length of 24.594 inches or, as Paul Reed Smith told us earlier this year, "It's a '59 spec guitar with four knobs."
      Smith expands: "In the 50s, Gibson's scale length was 24.594 inches [624.7mm]," not the quoted 24.75-inches and is "three thirty-secondths of an inch longer than our 24.5-inch [622mm] scale," used primarily on PRS's Singlecut models, and 0.4-inch (10.3mm) shorter than PRS's standard 25-inch scale.
