- Unemployment has increased youth suicide rate by 33% in last 6 years: Prof. Santosh Mehrotra to Karan Thapar for The Wire.
...........................................
In an interview to discuss the situation in the unorganized sector of the economy and the consequent impact on jobs and employment, one of our most highly regarded labour economists points out, relying on NCRB data, that the suicide rate for unemployed youth has increased by 33% between 2018 and 2024. Prof. Santosh Mehrotra says that NCRB data shows the suicide rate was 3 every 2 hours in 2018 but today it has increased to 2 every hour. He says this means that not only are the young failing to find jobs but are opting out of the labour market and their frustration and unhappiness is pushing them to suicide.
In a 34-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Prof. Mehrotra, who is a Professor at the Centre for Development Studies at the University of Bath in the United Kingdom, said that between 2015-16 and 2022-23 we experienced jobless growth in the unorganized sector. During that period the number of establishments increased by 2 million but the number of people employed decreased by 1.7 million.
Relying on calculations he has done, Prof. Mehrotra says that if the rate of growth in the unorganized sector had continued as it was between 2010-2011 and 2015-2016 right up till 2022-2023, we should have seen 7.98 million new establishments (as opposed to just 2 million) with 6.3 million more jobs (as opposed to a decrease of 1.7 million).
Prof. Mehrotra says the reason why the number of establishments increased by 2022-2023 but the number of workers diminished is because a very large number of these new establishments were Own Account Enterprises i.e. one man operations which are probably like roadside vendors. In other words, pakodawallas. Prof. Mehrotra says: : “This predominance of OAEs is the underlying symptom of, and a reason for, widespread poverty and a distressed job market condition.”
Within the unorganized sector the segment worst hit between 2011-2016 and 2022-2023 is manufacturing. Here the number of establishments shrank by 9.33% whilst the number of workers shrank by 15.03%.
Prof. Mehrotra said there are three explanations for what has happened to the unorganized sector. They are demonetization, a poorly thought-out GST and Covid.
Given that the unorganized sector is said to be effectively 45% of the economy and 80-85% of jobs this is clearly not good news for the Indian economy.
In the interview, Prof. Mehrotra also discusses what steps are necessary to create jobs and boost the economy. He explains how efforts to create jobs will boost consumption, create demand and thus provide the incentive for private sector investment to grow. He then identifies three areas where the Finance Minister should take steps to boost jobs. I will leave you to see the interview to find out more about this.

I personally know people who have committed suicide in last one year. Thank you Karan for discussing this. 🙏
Its unfortunate how Modi & his bjp men have washed their hands off all responsibility of any sorts ,zero governance Is what people are getting specially youngsters - exam paper leak& cancellation & NO JOB CREATION.
"Youth suicide in India is when young Indian people deliberately end their own life. People aged 15 to 24 years have the highest suicide rate in India, which is consistent with international trends in youth suicide."
There are no jobs, I've done BTech from a good college still all I get is customer support jobs paying 10-20k per month.
@@paulzavier6420 and still India's GDP keeps on growing strongly. I have a theory this GDP growth is due to black money being spent by corrupt govt employees. For example the real estate prices have grown astronomically due to black money being used to buy properties.

"The duty of the youth is to challenge corruption" !
So sorry for the families that have lost a loved one ! 🙏
Sadly your sentiments to the families is misplaced. It is the parents relatives friends neighbours communities are the culprits for youth suicide. Parents have children for their own ends to lift them out of poverty and provide a better life. Incessant pressure to achieve by mothers have fuelled suicides.
Unorganised and MSME sector is the backbone for employment generation. It is estimated that 85% people are employed in these sectors. The shrinking of these important sectors is a matter of great concern.
We are always with neutral and intellectual media and Karan Thapar.❤😂🎉.
Although unemployment is a key measurable factor, Indian citizens need to understand that the youth commit suicide not just because of unemployment, but also because of intangible metrics : namely, the enormous constraints that society puts on them in aspects of what to study, where to work, who to love, who to marry, what to eat, what to wear, who to pray.
Am an Indian migrant in the UK. Your excellent comment is my constant mantra on all comments as far as Indian society is concerned. Left India in the late seventies for all the reasons u mentioned. Parental control when challenged children are ostracised. Do not mix with Indians but have to explain to my white friends this Indian mindset which they are unable to comprehend.
Totally agree! Societal norms and parental control are some of the major factors especially in the case of females. Marriage, ideally a partnership between two people, is often unnecessarily influenced by parents, religion, and patriarchy. Employment also plays a crucial role in these dynamics.
@agnescraig2912 UK is not far behind. As this report shows:
Suicide is a significant national social issue in the United Kingdom. In 2022 there were 5,642 registered deaths by suicide in England and Wales, equating to an average of 15 suicides per day.
74.1% of suicides in England and Wales in 2022 were males.
The study suggests that recession and relaationships, with female partners in particular.
One dies either way.
But yes the west being a liberal society it has, what i prefer to call as motel-relationships. And has the convenience of picking one on the way at a motel to drop her at the next. And pick one afresh.

Sensitive and hardworking students are doing suicide on the other hand over pampered and lazy students are killing their parents for money because these kids wants to earn money in short term by doing trading on cricket and other apps with no knowledge.

Instead of showring abundant money on cricketers and film stars who are already very rich, government and industrial houses should generate employment for unemployed youth with this money.
exactly 💯
Modi has made India into a nation of Traders and not Manufacturing. Today, Bajaj buys electric presses from China and sells them in India. They have virtually closed their factories in India. We had a booming Clothes stitching and exporting industry a decade ago. Today, they have closed their factories and are now buying from Bangladesh and exporting to America. We had 17% of our GDP contributed by Manufacturing. Modi's policies have brought it down to 14 %. The make-in-India LOIN is now seen eating grass in Lodhi Gardens in New Delhi
Hindu kathre me hei
The government keeps reporting higher levels of revenue collected after implementing GST. This makes no sense if the government doesn't increase spending on public investment (to make up for the impact of higher taxes on private investment). We need higher expenditures on education, agriculture and infrastructure. Both demonetization and GST were policy induced shocks which should have been followed by increase in public investment to counter their impact on growth.
If i were a PM, i would do 2 things immediately.
1) reduce price of petrol & diesel to Rs 75/litre (this would reduce inflation)
2) fill the vacancies within central government. (Increase jobs, thus consumption)
In these kind of discussions, please bring in contrary opinionists like Panagriya, Sanjeev Sanyal, Krishnamurthy subramaniam etc to get a debate, other wise it may all be a bit one-sided..or interview them separately

I am victim of unemployment.... Last month i applied for a job for rupees 3000 yes just 3 thousand for a month but still didn't get it..... It was a work from home job of telemarketer but they told me they can not hire me because they have a English major for the job against me. Being a single mom with ongoing education this economy is cruel for me and my family but i hope future is better for us
Seriously this is sad.. they have high standards and requirements for job...if u dont fulfill a certain reuqirement they don't select you.
@@Recoverycounselling_1 thats not my point! What i am trying to say is a person who is well educated is applying for a job which gives three thousand rupees for a month and it is a 7 hour job. I applied because i was not a degree holder so i didn't mind the pay but for a person who spends so many rupees on a degree and earn that little is concerning
Govt should make govt jobs less attractive compared to other professions .
Nice information sir
Unemployment is not a last 10 year product and it is not a simple crisis that it could be solved in short 10year period.
So a good govt need at least 35 year to tackle any such problems including poverty.
Reservation has failed to give any result contrary it has harmed quality of services.
I am also suffering becoz of unemployment
Things will only get worse in coming days, months, and years ahead. There is simply no solutions for the unemployment.
Yes, when annual production is 15 million. No country Has solution. India should target 1.2 billion in 2050, 1 billion in 2075 and 0.8 million in 2100. This is the solution
@@anjanadas2105 what you say no country says as solutions for unemployment. Rather, countries find it hard to find people to work jobs. Getting rid of unemployed is no solution, it's advocating for genocide.
No solutions ? Making pakoras? Working at construction of Mandirs ?
There are solutions all over. If one could only open ones eyes.
[ I hope you can see my sarcastic]
I agree that the future of my country is bleak
Change the government. When their are so many vacancies in government. Still Modi chooses to ignore.
Modi is Vinaash for India, the more you vote him to power the more destruction of India and Indian youth will happen, the problem is that Media , social Media and even movies are not allowed to show the dark and negative side of india, in pervious old Hindi movies there were many show cause of social issues inflicting Indian society were shown like poverty, unemployment, untouchability so people used to get awareness and socialism was also a part of society, but now if you see everywhere there is only show cause of rich and famous people like Ambanis, Adanis, Cricketers, Filmstars and so on , people are not knowing that are there crores of people who are suffering in india, that is totally hidden now from general public
Pressure
When there are 3 million vacancies in central government. Why cant Modi government fill it ??...why he always have to be told what to do every time. Just being an underperformer everytime.
Very sad the Country is reduced to this ,while huge monuments are built to foster EGOS

What is TN , KARNATAKA, KERALA, DELHI, WEST BENGAL GOVERNMENT DOING ABOUT IT???
Why not introduce a Civilian Construction Corps and a Civilian Conservation Corp for building and maintaining infrastructure, which should include our the regeneration and maintenance of NATURAL infrastructure . We badly need to regenerate and preserve the quality of our soil, or sources of water, and the air we breath. These two, together with similar organizations for PUBLIC health and PUBLIC education, can provide GUARANTEED jobs to all those who may be looking for work, within easy distance of their homes. See the work of Jean Dreze (a French born Indian citizen who was among those who designed National Rural Employment Guarantee) and Pavlina Tcherneva in the US.
Minimum wage semi/unskilled work available for max. 100 days with delayed wages and skimming from officials is not what people want.

Serious issue but some comments always twist any criticism as an attack on Indian nationalism. All statistics like World Hunger Index/Migration Index/illegal migration/Remittances/Poverty/Suicide Rates are dismissed as anti India propaganda and Western Jealousy/Racism.
