- It was this time when sir Mike taught us about respecting the artists and their music. We also discussed about some disciplines about putting a show for yourself and when is the right time for everything (solo, groove, emphasize others). Because it's really not always about ourselves.
After the discussion, he told us of his experience long ago being reprimanded and being put to humility by his teachers when he shred a song from start to finish. It's all about the heart issue, we're talking pride here. He said, "be effective and be a blessing".
After that, he chose this song as an example to play as is and so we broke down the sections together and he taught us how to play the song Rosanna by Toto.

Santi Cuyugan Well, it depends on your standard. This song is technically very difficult to pull it off even for elite drummers.
People who disliked are just jealous and frustrated drummers. This is perfection from a fellow musician!
He has better technique than I do, but that is not the Rosanna shuffle. Watch Jeff Porcaro break it down and you'll see.

There are some grooves that are “off limits” in regards to trying to instruct other drummers or even just trying to show what they can do. IMO the only drummers that are qualified to show the Roseanna groove are the ones that have had to play it as a member of Toto. The best one to learn from and is about the closest to Porcaro’s feel is Shannon Forrest.
I don’t dislike it.... and it’s a good effort.... but it’s not perfection ..... but to be fair the Porcaro shuffle can only be done by the man himself..... this is good but it doesn’t flow smoothly... and looks a little awkward doing it which doesn’t help the feel.... but definitely doesn’t warrant hate comments 🙈

This Groove ist so awesome. Playing it at that tempo and still maintaing this chill feel ist really really hard. But when done correctly it's just a gift from heaven :D

Being a semi pro "air" drummer, I would think playing any of the older Toto songs are the most fun. They have a great beat and rhythm! Nice job Mike on this one!

Porcaro and Toto were pure magic in the 80's. I recall hearing Rosanna for the first time in '82 and it sent shivers down my spine on first listen. There just isn't much music that does that.

That single handed 16th note beat on the high hat is a Jeff Porcaro signature and this guy nailed it. Great funky, steady beat and extremely clean and tasty. You’re the man on this one!
It's actually 8th note triplet based not 16ths, playing the 1st and 3rd triplet and ghosting the 2nd triplet on the snare and accenting beat three on the snare. It's a halftime shuffle. It was first heard done by Bernard Purdie in Home at last and also Babylon sisters by Steely Dan hence it's also sometimes referred to as the "Purdie Shuffle". This is like a faster version of it Jeff Porcaro did in Rosanna.
Absolutely perfect! The attention he has for the detail of ghost notes is uncanny. Just flat out amazing playing and skill! I watched it several times.

That was a beautiful straight up version, very good mechanic on his drums, he's obviously very serious about his craft which all of us should take our drumming very seriously, just imagine if they let him loose on that song and he played it the way he wanted, that would have been awesome!
