I'm learning how to speak Korean BECAUSE I love kpop. Also I tried learning how to read it. It us really simple. I've been doing it wrong this whole time I would try to memories the romanization. Thank yku

I started talking to my cats in Korean 😂 every mealtime “배고프다? 먹고 싶어요?” “먹자!” “예~ 많이 먹어요”
And YES TTMIK is hands down my favourite learning resource! The free stuff is great but I loved it so much I bought the books and they’re so worth it.
I also make friends through an app called HelloTalk. I even hosted a Korean backpacker for two months while they looked for work.
Disclaimer: I’m still very much a noob but I’m getting better. I’m up to some simple sentences in present and past tense, and really trying to build my vocabulary. (I did learn hangeul first and it is so necessary!)
I do this with my pets too. It's great practice. Although, I'm not sure how useful "hurry up and poop" in Korean will be in the future. 🤣

I’m half korean so I grew up already knowing how to speak, read, and write by going to classes, but I stopped in 5th grade, therefore I forgot most of my speaking skills. My main goal is to be able to speak more in normal conversations.
Omg Im in the same situation as you!! I was born and raised in Korea and after movin to America I forgot so much. It's really easy relearning cuz it just flows back to me at times but I still struggle trying to speak in normal conversations

Im actually Korean,, I watch this video because Im interested in how foreigners learn Korean !! ♡ It's really easy to learn Korean. But English is difficult ( Of course, It's personal) I hope everyone good at Korean!!
Korea and English are not my first languages, and yes i agree with you. English is harder than korean, at least for me 😅
I anyway think that English is the easiest one among Latin languages. Because it doesn't have any accent mark and its grammar is quite easier than others in my opinion
@@dennykim7419 It's not, though... English has Germanic roots, it's just that about half of the vocabulary comes from Latin. But grammar, phonetics, syntax, etc is mostly Germanic or Celtic in origin.
@@sofia_with_an_f Latin language includes German roots. Using ABC is all Latin language.

That is LITERALLY how I learn English. I mean why would anyone thinks that I'd know every word from Eminem song. lol
Good job Sara. You've literally summed up everything I was thinking about learning languages.

Thank you for the subs Jaeho! Muchly appreciated:)

I have a different view: It is still important to understand how people use grammar and pronunciation in different ways. 1) if you like the song, you may be curious what it means. 2) people don’t all speak alike, so learning different ways they use it opens your mind further in that language. 3) Just because you learn it, doesn’t mean you have to speak that way. 4) fluent speakers tend to be able to play with the language (like in rap, poem, or jokes for example). 5) what’s considered proper or appropriate for a language exists on a spectrum (well many spectrums, but that is another topic!). In my own language (called my “A” language) growing up I was exposed to many people saying things in different ways. As a child (or even adult!) people corrected me to help me speak better. Someone learning an additional language needs to be exposed to the spectrum of what is acceptable and taught the boundaries so they know what is correct.
I know, I haven't watched many "how to study korean" videos, but, like, half of the things she said I just started doing in my spare time anyways
thats me too XD i used to watch a lot of english/american animations when i was younger, which some of them had british or southern accent.. I picked it up and used to talk in that accent in front of foreigner lmao

•Moony Gacha• Hellotalk has really helped me learn Korean fast. I conversed with Koreans mostly in Korean, and I forced myself not to use english as much as possible. At the start, I used the dictionary a lot. I also found that studying grammar and sentence structure has improved my understanding despite not knowing a lot of vocab in the beginning.
I wouldn't be going through this painful process of trying to master this language if BigHit would just put subtitles on their bangtan bombs lmao

For someone who speaks 7 languages, having mini conversations in your head is my nº1 recommended tip I give to people who ask me how they can learn languages. I find that by doing so, some responses to certain questions/scenarios become really automatic and will make you sound a lot more fluent and natural (even if you do make a mistake or two), because you're not thinking how to say things, they just come out. You train your brain to flip the switch into the foreign language way of thinking.
Also, on the topic of people being afraid of making mistakes. Don't worry about it. Have you ever realized that you also make mistakes sometimes in your native language? Maybe you're saying one thing but your brain is thinking another and then you just end up saying something weird, and nobody bats an eye. So it's only natural that you make mistakes in the foreign language.
Reading Korean is so easy to learn and pronounce as well. Learn Korean with RIKO Korean
Same, I wanna text while watching and not staring at the damn subtitles the whole time

My mom: stop watching kdramas and listening to kpop and study
Me: Sara told me this IS how i study
i always have korean convos in my head. but, i barely know anything in korean...
As a Korean learning English and Japanese, the biggest barrier for learning languages is shyness. I keep thinking ‘what if I am wrong? what if I sound dumb?’. I didn’t know that even foreigner learning Korean feel the same way. Thank you for sharing your very nice tips! I gained lots of confidence with your video!
Something I like to do is text my friends in English/Spanish but using Hangul characters. So basically I use the sounds and it helps with reading. I would just text in actual Korean but I don’t know enough to form actual conversations yet.
At my secondary school I do Korean classes and we get the talk to me in Korean textbooks
Where can I get themmm 😭
@@alanap6734 you can buy their in there website
I also need to learn korean...And i am learning for BTS💜💜💜💜
I got a children book which had picture to go along side out to help you remember how it is pronounced so ㅏ had an arrow being shot into a stick man's back with him screaming 'ah!'
When I learned English and reached intermediate level I changed language on my phone and computer and I plan to do that with the Korean as well when I feel ready to because it was a great way to make my brain much more comfortable with seeing it all day as you navigate your phone. I have the keyboard installed to already now get used to where the keys are and get used to looking at them. (Get it to be mindlessly automatic in my brain)
I started to learn English in 1996 and I feel so incredibly spoiled right now with all the easy access for the Korean with apps and what not. Studying is easier than ever!
My greatest tip is to not think "x means y" because then you attach all words to another word and you get a habit longer to need to translate in your head all the time which is very tiring and draining. Instead try to take the new words as a name. Just like you know many faces of people called Jonathan you can know several "names" (words) for things. Expose your brain to hearing it loads, see studying as an introduction to recognizing it in the future and don't stress about remembering everything on the first or second exposure. It will stick when you are ready to just like a commercial jingle on TV. :)
Off topic but I absolutely love her voice.

This was so helpful, thank you!
This is actually one of the best tip videos I've ever seen. Thank you for giving me some inspiration to kickstart my learning!!
1. Learn how to read and write Korean, don’t rely or use Romanizations
2. Try to read the lyrics to Korean songs and sing along
3.Watch Korean TV shows and repeat lines from them
4.Ask people to correct you when you make mistakes. Be open to being criticized
5. Have conversations in your head in Korean
6. Talktomeinkorean (Korean website, textbooks and social media)
7. Use apps
8.write in Korean (clarifies understanding of the word)
9.Go to Korea
10.Ask when you don’t understand something
Thanks sara holmes.
Some people think to get used with the sound is first priority than understanding the writing and read system, but for learning Hangul, read and writing system to know seems high priority.
I am trying to teach Korean for foreigner and refer your method! Thank you. Hope your channel 흥하길! - cheers from S.korea
I think, This tips are same as The other international languages..
Thank you for nice tips!
So... basically these are the tips to learn ANY language. Great video! ❤️
So proud of you ^^
I'm doing this for webtoon🤭✊
Omg I am not aloooooneeeeee
I am very surprised that I'm already in the right direction lol. I learned Hangul and always practice by writing my friends or family members names in Hangul. And I always look and pause lyric videos to read them so I can sing them better and faster. I watch dramas with both Korean and English subtitles so I can learn small words and the structure. I unfortunately don't have anyone I can ask if I'm correct or not, there's no one here that speaks Korean so.. yeah.. Also surprisingly I always think of meeting my favorite idols and what I would say and I would do my best to translate that into Korean. If I don't know, I go and learn it. I will look into "talk to me in Korean." It sounds very helpful! I've used apps to see if my Korean pronunciation was okay and tried to (once it was good) make it sound natural. Also number 10... hehehe... I am very poor. But I am saving. By the time I do get enough money I will have already know enough to survive. I'm very glad and surprised that I'm already in a good direction! Thank you!
Sorry this comment was long, _I_ don't even like ready long comments... but quick note: Your name keeps reminding me of BryonsVids videos.. Sara.. pronounced SArA last name, ng full name.. Sarang. I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself. It has no H it was perfect.
how do you have both korean and english subtitles?
sahara aweys
I use the Viki app, a ton of kdramas, jdramas and movies are on there. There they have a "learning mode" where you can have both Korean and English subtitles at the same time. Though, it seems that it doesn't work on phones because the mode doesn't show up. But it'll work on a laptop or computer.
Also, if I'm not using Viki, I just switch the subtitles to Korean and English every other episode. See if I can understand it.

A lot of these are how I learned Japanese. The song thing and the talking to yourself especially.
I learned how to read Hangul about 6 years ago or so and recently I’ve been watching your videos and it’s inspired me to start studying korean more.
Thanks for all the great advices! They are really helpful. I've been interested in Korean language, culture and society for a long time, and finally, I seriously started learning the 한 국 어. What I like to do is to make small dialogues on my own, to see if I can say what I think in Korean. I practice most of the tips you mentioned, too.
I think having a Korean friend would help a lot with the developing of vocabulary and fluency in conversation, so if there are people who read this and would like make a new friend, please reply.
some people in here saying you shouldn't learn korean just for kpop and I'm going to be really honest with the fact that, for me, I have no other reason to learn korean.

Hi i'm korean!! Thank you very much for uploading a video about Korean! 감사합니다
im currently learning and I use an app called ‘coursera’. It‘s an uni course app which includes losts of uni courses for free. It has a course called “first step korean” and if like me you’re dyslexic so you need like a set lesson and an order to learning, it has really good lessons and it’s free. It’s really good when you first start learning korean, especially if you have dyslexia!
I'm learning because Korea looks interesting, its history is also really good! (I'm a little worried on racism, because as a foreigner I'm bound to have some discrimination, but I don't think there will be that much)
Peridot, there's discrimination no matter where you go, it's just up to all people to stop it, we're all human right?
Are u british... I'm an early teen and would love to learn Korean I would also love to be a Korean exchange student... I just think i really won't be able to learn this language I'm really stupid lol

Wow I'm so glad I found your channel!
"Have mini conversations in your head"
Me: That won't be a problem!
Like if you talk to yourself when you're alone. Lol, I'm weird.
I’m having difficulties on learning the formal and informal in korean language 🥺👉🏻🐯
The best way is like you said practice in your head. I do this all with Spanish and I even did it with ASL lol but on my hands like when no one was looking lmao. But it gives you the freedom to make mistakes comfortably, be introspective with the language and form new sentences you haven't before. Then you can tell that it becomes a bit easier talking to someone!
This is an amazing video so pumped!! Keep up the videos
