    I started on a Z400 and 100% would recommend it to anyone just starting out. It's got enough power to have fun, can keep up with pretty much anything, and long rides are still comfortable. The only big drawback I ever saw was at highway speeds you really do have to battle the wind. Tucking in helps but a strong enough gust will make you feel like you're at the mercy of the wind.

      When I bought the Duke 390 I was looking for a naked. I was 285lbs when I started riding it. Lost 40-50lbs since then, but I had no problem hauling me around. I was awesome! I never wanted a “sport” type starter cause I’m not really into super sports. Maybe if I start track riding. I test rode the Kawasaki z400, BMW G 310R, and the Duke 390. I chose the Duke over the BMW (close second) cause it has a snapper throttle which to me helps more with throttle control when you upgrade. I LOVED the 390. I was a blast to ride. Reason I traded it was because I live around a bunch of highways and interstates. At 70+ the bike is at its peak and I wanted more power to be able to pull my self out of situations if one arose. Other than that I absolutely loved riding it. Kinda wish I didn’t trade it in just to have and ride around.

      How is the street triple in your opinion after riding the Duke 390? Just wondering as I also started on a KTM Duke 390 but I went to a Yamaha R6 after looking at both naked bikes and supersports, and it is an awesome bike! I was not used to the super sport's aggressive seating position but within a week it felt as comfortable as the duke. What i love about the R6 is being able to tuck in (also the insane power at 14K RPM)

    I recently picked up a 2016 Yamaha MT-03 with only 3000kms for a dank price, and I love it. I'm an experienced rider but it's my sole mode of transport, so it's super practical but still hoons on mountain roads like nobodies business. The power band is super linear, so theres ample low end torque and still feels great at high revs.
    I was looking at getting a Duke 390, which definitely felt a tad faster, but was told by several mechanics that the plastic fuel/oil? pump is prone to fucking out and they see a lot that catastrophically overheat. That could be here-say, but here in Australia, Japanese bikes are definitely cheaper to maintain in general.
    I can't recommend the MT-03 highly enough for absolutely any type of rider.

  • @timothycoyne5874
    @timothycoyne5874 Před 2 lety +2

    After many years of having to remove the left fairing (and slider) on my VFR for 2-3 oil & filter changes annually, I finally moved to a naked bike. So much easier to maintain, but much more time consuming to clean. Still, I like it.
    One big point regarding naked vs. fairing bikes for lane splitting - While the naked bike itself is usually narrower, the handlebars are usually wider than a sportbike with clip-ons, negating the advantage of the narrower bike. Add to that the fact many naked bike owners install bar end mirrors that stick out even a little further, and you might have a bike too wide to lane split (or filter), not that it’s legal in most US states anyway.
    One big advantage to a naked with it’s more upright ergonomics is being able to see around you more easily than in a sportbike crouch. Your more upright torso and head sticking up makes you easier for other motorists to see you, too.

In about 25 mins + 2 sockets/1 allen wrench, i can turn my naked monster into a fully equipped touring bike! not to mention the stock 12v outlet serves well for GPS/Phone charging. It just really is such a good bike. I will say, however....It's biggest downfall is the fuel economy. If you are riding with people on bigger harleys or touring/adv bikes, you might be pushing limits for gas stops while they are still at half a tank. As for which naked bikes I like the most,at least when it comes to looks,I'd have to go with modern retro nakeds (like Bonneville T120, R Nine T, CB1100, W800, Z900RS and similar bikes) because they look cool,or older naked bikes from the 90s and 2000s (such as ER5, Hornet 600, SV650, GSX1400 , Monster 620, etc.) because of nostalgia,since I'd often see them riding around town back when I was a kid.

I drag race my bikes and a supersport was the way to go obviously. Both have pros and cons, just find the bike you like and do you. I think everyone in the motorcycle world should stop buying what everyone else tells them to. Buy a bike that you love to look at and a bike that matches your riding skill and it will be a match made in heaven.
