    I don't mark my bibles, I enter the text into a spreadsheet. As you grow, different verses will jump out at you but if you have them marked all you will note is the highlighted text.

    • @richardryan8462
      @richardryan8462 Před 2 lety +16

      I don't think your comment is going to get the attention it deserves. If you use a spreadsheet, your notes are not limited by what the margin will allow. It allows for referencing across different Bibles (yeah, Douay-Rheims psalms are numbered differently but that's hardly a show stopper). Many spreadsheet applications allow for versions so as you change your mind about what should be "highlighted" you still have your previous notes in the same place you have your current notes so you not only don't lose your previous notes you have convenient access to them with information on the time and date you made changes. You don't need to buy new bibles for more "highlights" or highlight over previous highlights where you might as well get a paintbrush with translucent ink to sweep over each page. You can share your "highlights" and "margin notes" with any number of other people. And on and on and on.
      As for the "romantic" aspect of using a highlighter because spreadsheets might seem too "tech" I'm old enough to remember when highlighters where a new thing, a technical innovation, if you will, so even the romantic argument really shouldn't hold much water especially since spreadsheets have been around for several decades nowadays. Come to think of it, around 1980 I remember working on an Apple IIe with its killer app, the VisiCalc spreadsheet. Isn't that as romantic as a highlighter pen?

      I appreciate this comment. This describes EXACTLY my thoughts on the matter. I struggle with the same thing when I borrow a friend's book with underline markings. I spend more time trying to figure out what they were thinking, rather than trying to gain my own insights. Just how my brain works I guess.

      Second thought: I use Verbum for notes. I actually haven't come up with a perfect way to document my notes, but Verbum seems the most flexible so far for Bible notes. I may try a more generalized tool like Notion at some point.

    I have a small “travel Bible” (KJV with NT and Psalms.) I bought it in college and have had it for years because it is zippered, so it completely closes and the pages can’t get bent or crushed when I toss it in my backpack or suitcase. I wish more Bibles had this feature.

    Brother. Praise be to Jesus Christ! I came across this video of yours and looked at a few others on your channel. Great content man! Keep fighting the good fight! A video made could be a soul saved! Do not get discouraged with only a handful of likes, views, or any negative flack for your videos. Even when you question if making these videos ‘is worth it’ because they take so much work and you see so little fruit... Persevere! Christ needs you in this fight for souls. He needs your videos to reach His children. May our Blessed Mother keep you always. Ave Maria!

    Nice review. I have been considering the Didache and the Ignatius (the pretty one), and your review helped me see that the Ignatius is the one I should buy, because what I need is a family bible for readings after prayer, and to keep on our home altar. The fact of it being so pretty might even encourage some of us to take it down and read it more!

    You forgot the most important, the Douay Rheims. If you are serious about the Word of God you need the Douay Rheims. Forget about the thous and the thees and all that nonsense, check it out and the notes and the depth and great for preaching. Beautiful bible powerful. I have all those bibles everything from the esv to the Kjv and everything in between and even though I love all them nothing comes close to the Douay Rheims bible for me. Thanks for the upload. 🙏🙌

    I agree 100% with your choices. (I have all of them myself!) My only suggestion would be to add a fourth bible to your list for referencing certain passages that might be translated too loosely in modern versions. So, I would add the DOUAY RHEIMS BIBLE to the list. Great review and channel! 👍

      [1] Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
      [2] By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

    The problem with external tabs is that, if not careful, you might tear it out with half the page. Speaking from painful experience :) So if u need indents, buy a Bible that has indented tabs. But better is to buy a Bible without tabs so u learn where exactly the books are.
    Also, i recommend the NIV Cultural Background Study Bible. Though it's Protestant and missing books, the notes do not hesitate to make references to the Deuterocanonicals. There's nothing like this is u want to understand the literal sense.

    As for study Bibles - I like the Navarre Bible Series. Extensive commentary from the Church Fathers, CCC, St J. Escriva. As a bonus, it offers the Latin Translation of the Scripture below the commentary. And the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible. Dr Scott Hahn helped put this one together. These 2 complement each other well.
    Which translation is the Didache ? Seems like most study bibles use the RSV. The Douay-Rheims is my favorite. It seems to contain more a more detailed translation.

    Didache is more about the CCC than about the bible. Great for linking the two, but not a good study bible in itself. Like everyone else I either have to look to the past like Haydock (the fathers commentaries referenced there are timeless after all) while looking with anticipation to the future of the Ignatius Catholic study bible OT. Also, I don't write in books generally, much less a bible. Notebooks and journals exist for a reason. (And the recent run of Exceed brand journals from Walmart are surprisingly high quality for the price, so I don't carry a 70¢ spiral bound with pages falling out with my leather-bound gilt-edged bible. )

    For my fellow TradCaths, there is a Duay Rheims Bible with the Vulgata side by side. It's pricey, but it's stunning. I also recommend the NRSVCE, Illustrated Catholic Bible for the folks that want a premium Bible. There are many that are not into that translation, though.
    For my fellow Spanish Speaking Caths, there are a couple of them I recommend. The Great Adventure Bible is available in Spanish, same with the Illustrated Catholic Bible (finally a premium Bible in Spanish). There's also a little one I take to mass, the letherette "La Santa Biblia" Editiorial San Pablo. I also love "La Biblia de Jerusalén", big print edition.

    The Confraternity N.T, frin the 1940s is the superior pocket N.T. in that format to carry around for travel use. It is far and away the best N.T. that the 20th century produced and is very orthodox, elegantly worded, and the most reliable Bible, Catholic or Protestant, that the Romish Church produced and authorised.

    Great job on the video. I like how you kept it simple. I am just starting to read The Great Adventure Bible and I am finding it intimidating. I am not to familiar with the Catholic Faith and I thought I was. I had to order a copy of The Catholic Catechism because The Great Adventure Bible does reference it on certain articles. Prior to the Great Adventure Bible I was reading a Christina Bible with 66 books . It still my favorite Bible. Its called the Living Insights Study Bible by Charles Swindoll and its the NIV version. I understand it better and Charles Swindoll does a great job of explaining how to apply Scripture to every day life. That Bible is no longer in print but you can still find it used. Please let me know if there is a Catholic Bible in NIV as I understand that better. Once I understand I would like to get the The Didache Bible or Ignatuis Press Study Bible.

      The NIV Bible is a Protestant translation. I like it also, but they don’t make a Catholic version of it. It doesn’t include all the books in the Catholic canon.

    Can I ask what highlighters you use in your Bibles? Have you found any that won't bleed through?

    • @PopeCulture
      @PopeCulture  Před 4 lety +1

      Such a good question! I have found a few on Amazon that work really well for me. They aren't typical highlighters in that they're more waxy and gel-like, but they bleed a lot less than a typical highlighter would. They're not perfect, but the best solution I've found. Here's a link: www.amazon.com/Twist-Glide-Gel-Bible-Highlighters/dp/B00NF6PAJC/ref=sxts_sxwds-bia-wc-drs1_0?cv_ct_cx=bible%2Bhighlighters&dchild=1&keywords=bible%2Bhighlighters&pd_rd_i=B00NF6PAJC&pd_rd_r=e981fe8c-d9d5-4c24-9b55-377a0da39661&pd_rd_w=3lL5X&pd_rd_wg=Z9qAt&pf_rd_p=f3f1f1cd-8368-48df-ac69-94019fb84e3f&pf_rd_r=K79YA9BZ0F16P1K1KQAN&qid=1599593721&sr=1-1-f7123c3d-6c2e-4dbe-9d7a-6185fb77bc58&th=1

      I’d just like to share mine. I’m using Zebra Mildliner, I think the color is called lemon yellow, which leans toward light gold yellow. I find it warm and pleasing to the eyes. I’m not sure if “bleeding” is the right term, but I guess there’s a little of shadow at the back of the paper - nothing too distracting though. It works perfectly well for me. I also use Frixion PASTEL highlighter, the goldish one, to highlight verses but with less emphasis than the Zebra which has a stronger color. And it’s erasable btw if you don’t know. I couldn’t find the link but you maybe you could.

    The Great Adventure Bible unfortunately has a glued binding. Not good! It's also "red letter," i.e., Christ's words are in red. I like black letter only. The red letter is light and difficult to read. And the GAB around $60, which is way overpriced. A much better everyday bible is the Ignatius Press RSV2CE leather one, which you showed. It has a sewn binding, and is less than $30. You can buy two for the price of one GAB.
    The Didache is great. Unfortunately, it lacks the translator's notes. That's it's only drawback IMO. I like the Ignatius NT Study bible a little better. (It's only NT now, but I understand a full version is on the way, probably sometime in 2021.) The notes by Curtis Mitch and Scott Hahn are terrific. (The RSV2CE is the best modern English translation IMO. But it's still a Protestant translation. Every Catholic needs a copy of the Douay Rheims Challoner version.)
    I agree with you about the Ignatius NT travel version. Great little bible.

      @PopeCulture  Před 4 lety

      Trad Cath I am finding the synthetic leather binding on the Great Adventure Bible to be a bit disappointing long term-there are just so many really quality resources inside it for beginners that I still have to recommend it!
      For a more “adult” or mature reading I do love and recommend any of the Ignatius bibles-I also love their NT Study Bible and I’ll definitely be picking up a version of their completed Old Testament one too if/when it comes out!

    • @tradcath2976
      @tradcath2976 Před 4 lety +2

      @@PopeCulture Hi. I do not find the GAB to be much of a "study bible." There are a few articles, but very few verse notes. Nothing like the Didache or Ignatius Study Bible, or any of the Protestant study bibles, e.g., the ESV Study Bible.
      Another bible you might want to consider is the New Catholic Bible, ("NCB") put out by St. Joseph Press. It's a new and fairly literal translation. I find its rendering of various verses (e.g., Isaiah 7:14) to be much more faithful and orthodox (small o) than the NABRE. It's not as elegant as the RSVCE, but I think the NCB is solid. (The NCB is not as wildly gender-inclusive as, e.g., the NRSVCE or the NIV. It takes more of a middle ground, like the ESV.)

    • @freda7961
      @freda7961 Před 3 lety +2

      IMO I think GAB is a solid study bible WHEN coupled with the online study and/or the Walking with God book. By itself, yeah maybe not. But since I’m using it with other references such as the ones mentioned earlier, and other commentaries, I find it excellent. Plus it uses RV2CE and that’s always a big thing for me. But thanks for pointing out the NCB, I’ll try to get a copy!

      RSV is protestant translation. But RSVCE is different, it had been modified and adapted by Catholic Biblical Association.
      The editors' stated aim for the RSV Catholic Edition was "to make the minimum number of alterations, and to change only what seemed absolutely necessary in the light of Catholic tradition."
      RSV2CE =
      The Ignatius Edition "was revised according to [the norms of] Liturgiam Authenticam, 2001" and approved under the same [i.e. 1966] imprimatur by the Secretariat for Doctrine and Pastoral Practices, National Council of Catholic Bishops on February 29, 2000.

    The Didache Bible has some very troubling Modernist notes. For example, Genesis 21, the notes say "The Church holds both the Jewish and Muslim faiths in great respect"
    Picking up my copy of the Clear Quran, going to 4:231-232 for example, there it says "The Messiah, Jesus, was no more than messenger of God...So believe to God and His messengers and do not say 'Trinity" Stop!"
    This is only one example of the doctrinal errors in the notes of the Didache. In fact it has entire pages of apologetics that contain messages contrary to the Dogma that you would find for example in a copy of Ott's Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma. I bought 3 copies of the Didache bible. Two were for giving to others but now I don't know what to do with them since I can't give someone a Bible that contains things that don't follow basic Catholic principles.
