  • I built another Warre hive, out of five pieces of 1"x10" x 10 foot boards. You will need a tablesaw (unless you are very good with a hand saw). I used galvanized nails, 6D and 4D. I predrilled most of the nail holes. It took about 8 hours. I still have some work to do, mostly scrounging up some scrap cloth for the quilt.

The hive seems to be doing well. During the day, when it is warm, you can see the bees flying in and out of the doorway. I don't intend to open up the hive this year, I want to let the bee colony grow and have enough honey to make it through their first winter. Next fall I will take the top hive body off and harvest the honey. In my more recent Garden Tour videos you can see the hive.

that's super cool! please let us know how it works out!! i'm thinking of doing this myself. i'm not sure if i'm going for the warre hive or the kenyan or tanzanian top bar hive design... i live in canada so it's pretty cool here in the winter and i don't know which will be better for the bees.
i'd love to see a vid of your hive in action this summer :) good luck!

like each box of a warre hive I bought yesterday, from the photos the dimensions like like each box was about 1' height and 18" wide

to make it easier I have chosen to use these measurements and they are working. 11 3/4 x 8 1/4 so I don't have to fiddle around with 16teens and 32nds. My spacing is 1/2 inch instead of 15/32 and 1 inch instead of 15/16 for top bar. The 16th and or 32nd is not much difference and the bees are fine with that.

Believe it or not. But the metric system I find is easier to work with than the standard american system.
The only thing I don't like is our wood (American) lumber is slightly off for metric plans. But I think it is usable. Or if a planer is available. You can just plane it down.
      But whatever floats your boat

I don't understand the top lid for the hive. I though the quilt is supposed to be open. How can it get ventilation if there is a cover on top?

the quilt is insulation and it allows water vapor to pass through. it is not intended to allow a lot of air through.
