- The idea of the Super League sucked...but it did remind me of a championship of a similar name. It was called Superleague Formula...and it was one of the strangest motor racing series' ever created. Did it have some merit? How did it die? What has this got to do with football? Well, let's find out, shall we?

Yooooo, I used to watch that League back then. I even remember as a child wishing my team (Panathinaikos) to make a team in Superleague in order to compete against Olympiakos.
So basically since Panathinaikos has nearly 0 chance of winning the Greek Super League against Olympiakos so you switch sports just to see your team beats the rival?

The teams that we support are Sports Clubs, not just football clubs. They have departments in many sports, most importantly Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Water Polo and handball. We want to beat our rival teams whether it's men's Football or women's handball.

A1GP was a great idea, Tommo is right, how about a one-off end of year event at a random, pre-selected venue raced in the winter or at a time when not much racing is happening and literally have it as a motorsport world cup, would be a great idea.
We kinda have one right now.Granted,it's olympics instead of world cup,but the idea is still there with FIA Motorsport Games
What's not to love
- Based on football teams
- Uses V12 engine
- Guys from F1 races there.

I literally just got into the F1 super League just before I saw this video
A1 GP but with Football teams. I'm pretty sure that's not all there is to this sport, but it sure felt like it. (I only watched one race, and then got bored)
I think one of the league's biggest problems was it's tv package ..... Like here in the States it was on Setanta which if I remember correctly was buried in like a third sports package you would have had to purchase to see the races

I went to a Superleague Formula race meeting at Brands Hatch once (the year that Chris Van Der Drift did a backflip into a bridge) and I was impressed with the cars. The one thing that stuck out was how damn loud they were!! I've been to a lot of races with loud cars over the years but these cars actually hurt my ears!!
Have to say, that team NZ car looked mighty fine!
Omds I use to have this flashbacks of formula 1 spec cars branded by football teams in my head thinking it was just me being crazy and it actually happened.
I was a kid probs like 6,7,8 years old
I’m not sure if this will be mentioned in the video since I’m commenting this before the premier, but F1 nearly had a Superleague of its own.
Back in ‘09, there was a buget cap proposed that saves costs from the economy crash, with the smaller teams getting more resources, so they could build a better car with less buget.
The teams of course, were furious, and all the teams that were in FOTA announced in June that they’ll be withdrawing at the end of the season to form their own breakaway series.
The leak calendar for 2010 had prestigious f1 events (Monaco, Canada, Silverstone, Italy, and Japan) and tracks they haven’t been to in a while (Argentine, Jerez, Mexico, San Marino, Indy, Magny-Cours, and Adelaide.) and tracks f1 has never been to (Portimao, Eurospeedway in Germany, and Helsinki Thunder in Finland.)
Thankfully after multiple meetings, the teams in FOTA came to agreement with the Concorde agreement in Augest, killing off the breakaway series, at the cost that Max Mosely didn’t run for re-election as FIA president.
i remember i watched one race of this series when i was a little kid and i found it interesting that there were countries competing.
after that i never heard of this racing series again always wondered where is this and what happened. now i know why :D

I'm just happy you used a clip of our local touring car championship the TC2000 in Argentina at the beginning of the video.
And as a funny side fact we also had local football teams sponsoring cars in another racing series for a time, called "Top Race". My club sponsored a beautiful Alfa Romeo and we won a race ^^
The title made me think this was going to be about how F1 nearly had a split for the 2010 season with at least 7 teams considering leaving, and taking all the important races with them, which would have seen F1 either fold faster then USAC did after CART split or seen it relegated to a 2nd rate series that, while higher then IndyCar, would have been second fiddle to the Grand Prix World Championship.
A1GP kinda does exist as a one-off event every year, the FIA Motorsport Games

00:01, that's Super TC2000, a motorsport competition in Argentina, my hometown, and football (soccer) is our most common sport
These football racing teams were also in Scalextric slot car sets. Around the late 90's. I still have the insert from my original Scalextric set where they advertise the different available cars and their was a Liverpool, Arsenal car that I can remember.
Great as that v12 sounded, it was all noise and no trousers as that thing didn't accelerate very fast. As for the series I think I heard of it once in passing and never even realized it started

I remember watching this at Brands Hatch. The cars sounded fantastic but the racing was pretty boring

I watched the first race. I remember the commentators mentioning that a number of the clubs were playing their football matches that very moment. It was a pretty boring race and I’m surprised it lasted that long. A1gp was similar but better, and I wasn’t really a fan of that either. The driver was just an afterthought, I hated that they weren’t even mentioned in the standings. There was also little driver consistency race on race and a lot of them I’d never heard of.
A1 GP is like Sail GP and as a fan of both motorsport and sailing it is a very interesting concept which has definitely succeeded in the sailing world
This was the first big event that came to my local racetrack, they came with the fia gt1 in 2010 in Navarra, just a couple of months after the opening and I was 12 by then, now Im a racing mechanic and it could be thanks of this

They were uncomfortably loud in the flesh. I went to one of the rounds at Donington and even with ear plugs in, my ear drums went all itchy on the first couple of laps.
Agreed I've never been so happy for a race to end!!!! I didn't have ear plugs.
It's a shame the A1 Championship isn't around anymore, the drivers in the 2021 line-up would attract so many more viewers this time around.

FC BARCELONA had a go in World Seies by Renault (then F3.5).Barcelona was a sponsor in 2001 or 2002.something like that.
AC Milan did as well back at early 2000s for F3000.Though afaik it was a driver's personal sponsor (driver was Ananda Mikola if you're wondering)

As an Arsenal supporter it’s nice to see someone dissing Tottenham and not us.
The concept looks fun and as a fan of both sports I'd love to see an FC Barcelona racing car but in reality it wasn't that impressive. The countries race on the other side would be more fun I think, maybe not as a category in itself but maybe one race every year after the end of the F1 season.
