    Andrew Carnegie Documentary: How does a boy born into poverty become the richest man in the world? Andrew Carnegie is the personification of the American Dream; an extraordinary rise from the very bottom to the absolute financial top. However, I must warn you: there are two different sides to Andrew Carnegie. On the one hand, Andrew Carnegie was a hypocrite - he preached about workers rights publicly, and yet privately he slashed his workers wages, significantly increased their working hours, and essentially exploited his staff as slave labour in barbaric dangerous conditions to build his fortune. Carnegie destroyed unions, and his actions resulted in countless unnecessary brutal deaths - for example the tragedy of Homestead.
    And yet, on the other hand, Andrew Carnegie may be the greatest ever philanthropist - after becoming the richest man in the world, he then spent the rest of his life giving almost all of that money away via philanthropy. He funded universities, schools and nearly 3000 free public libraries around the world to help others improve their own position in life. Many believe he inspired future billionaires to give more of their money away and embrace corporate philanthropy. Andrew Carnegie is also responsible for incredible innovation that helped build America and change the way we do business - we’ll look at his rise through the corporate ranks and how he built his fortune in the steel business. Andrew Carnegie’s story is both an inspiring rags to riches tale, and a controversial business documentary. And the history of Andrew Carnegie involves several other business titans - for example Carnegie was bitter rivals with John D Rockefeller, and also ended up making the biggest business deal in history with JP Morgan, which is how Carnegie became the richest man alive. But before all that wealth and drama, we need to travel back to Scotland in 1835, where Andrew Carnegie was born into abject poverty…

    This is a fine example of the complaint I have about self improvement and business improvement theories. Andrew Carnegie is often used as an example of how good daily habits, self belief, perseverance, networking and other positive behaviours create success, when in reality his success was created on the basis of exploitation, corruption, insider trading, with disregard for the destruction of the environment and human life. Basically every unethical practice we know is the basis of huge success in business- but this reality is denied.

    Carnegie definitely left a very impactful legacy, especially in the Pittsburgh area. The nuance of his impact is very important to touch on like you did in this video. Even my family has been largely affected by both his philanthropy and wrongdoing. My grandfather's family were immigrants that came to Pittsburgh and his brother died at around thirty in a fatal accident at one of his mills. That being said, my grandfather still routinely visits the Carnegie Public Library and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. The irony being that the library was supposedly installed for the workers of the dangerous mills. On top of this, my parents both graduated and met at Carnegie Mellon University. So, in a way the same person who led to my great uncle's death, led to my birth. Great video keep it up!

      Your comment somehow does partly answer one of the greatest, if not the greatest moral issues concerning human society.
      Does the goal justify the means?
      In your case one could easily assume that the answer is yes.
      But then again I have my doubts.
      If the brother of your grandfather had not died the way he did, his progeny today may have equally shared the fruits of the labour of their grandfather, just like you.
      But then again, Andrew would not have the great transformative effect on millions of American citizens.
      Guess such things will always require sacrifices, martyrs, injustice and appalling life for certain segments of our fellow human beings.
      The same principles apply today to those who work for Jeff Bezos, as does the increasing use of robots and AI. Competition and profit.
      However as people like Steven Pinker will assure you we are going forward. I agree in this case. The conditions at the workplace are not remotely akin to those that your grandparents experienced. But they still can keep some at the bottom of the social hierarchy, they do not guarantee the education of their children, especially when the public education is being neglected. No wonder they are increasingly producing a generation of believers in conspiracies, people succumbing to warbled guttrals of demagogues and snake oil pundits, people who are completely abdoning the existence of objective truth or the legacy of the founding fathers.
      Yes I can see progress in your case here.
      But in general a regression for the American society. Hope I am mistaken.

      The end doesn't justify the means, when the means are literally the END of someone else!
      A work related accident could be just that, an accident due to neglect. Next time we should improve work conditions. If we ignore it intentionally, the next work accident becomes intentional.
      We shouldn't justify evil ever. No matter how big or small!
      To answer your question "does the end justify the means", no it shouldn't.
      Would I steal from a supermarket to feed my kids? It's easy, but it hurts the owners and the economy.
      I rather work hard to feed my family! That way I support my family AND the economy.

These guys built these systems, and thus had the ability to control how these systems view them. it's hard to say if they did more good or bad, I reckon I don't know enough to make that judgement. But they definitely used their positions to affect how we judge them, and for that I error on the skeptical side of how I view their character. While watching this I just realized the real reason he gave away so much money to create libraries all over the United States. I was watching this and started to think it was a little bit of an extreme attack on him. And then I thought about why I thought that. And that was because I had read a biography of him when I was younger. That had been a book that was in a LIBRARY. He donated so many libraries to the United States so that he could dry up any possible market for a book that might be critical of him. Libraries would not want to bite the hand that created them. And libraries are main customers for books. Carnegie had created a safe way to make sure that his narrative of his life would be the one that would prevail. Thank god for the internet.

Major corporations do it all of the time. How much money did Steve Jobs donated to charities throughout his life? Meanwhile, in China... Btw, I heard that Foxconn is a workers utopia. 😂

    In the last few years, "content" on the internet has been becoming cheaply made trash. CZcams used to be a place to find amazing and interesting videos. This is the second video of yours that I have watched and I'm subscribing. This is the content that I want to see on the internet. Captivating, interesting, well-written and well-edited videos. The thing about music that you mentioned is so true. Everything about this video is perfect; from the cinematic visuals and music/sound effects to the words you use and the tone/emotion in your voice (compared to the monotone voice that many creators use nowadays). You tell a story better than any CZcamsr I've ever seen. Massive respect to you, I'll be watching more soon.

    It makes the story more compelling and your voice over only adds to the drama, well done 👍🏾

      Yes, great delivery, but a lot of nudging. Not really a balanced view or anything other than the approved message on Carnegie. For example, he glosses over that the government militia provided the real muscle behind ending the Homestead strike. It's always that way. Blame business for everything. government for nothing--straight out of the strategy of Herbert Marcuse.

Someone one who doesn't want to read books can still gain knowledge by these Netflix like documenteries. Really appreciated.

    • @friendlyfire7861
      @friendlyfire7861 Před 9 měsíci +5

      He didn't present a balanced view. This video was full of "nudging" toward thinking business is bad and by implication government good. Did you notice that the real muscle behind putting down the Homestead strike was by government militia? Go to 35:20 if you missed it. This is the same stuff I heard all the way back in high school; the author apparently never grew intellectually. It's informative, but it's not "balanced." You really need to step back a little. My high school teacher said almost all the exact same things as this fellow; it's well presented, but the substance is tendentious. Also, try watching some of it at 2x without sound. The Marxist imagery and propagandist nature of the video will be apparent, I think.

    Crazy, I remember reading in both the "Law of Success" and "Think and Grow Rich" how much Napoleon Hill idolized and showed reverence towards Carnegie. Constantly used as an example in many teachings. I wonder if he knew the true nature and character of Andrew Carnegie, for his writings and some of the lessons are contrary to who Carnegie truly was.

    • @gm2407
      @gm2407 Před rokem +3

      Hill was a conman. It is unlikely Carnegie tasked him or provided him anything for his work. Like all the modern conmen he said enough to keep you on the hook and nothing that anyone hadn't seen or thought of before. What useually stopped people growing rich is a deficiency in ability, contacts to raise finance or willingness to screw people over. One or more of these things.

    • @gm2407
      @gm2407 Před rokem +4

      @@jpmoney91 Characterisation and true character can be very far from each other. One is spin and the other is based on actions taken. At best we have a detailed picture which is incomplete. At worst we have charactisations painting on the historical evidence. Much like every historical figure really. If you want to be the rich magnate the he would be a hero and role model to mantel. If you fall short in that regard and do not want to be exploited then he is an opressor of people. Seems like a good thing to remember, that everyone is in competition, do not undersell your worth, or you never catch up. Also I can't imagine Hill would want to impart a negative characterisation on Carnegie when he is trying to sell a dream to people to buy his book. But that might just be an assumption I have of the desperate audience of the time period. I have seen others sell their systems as never mind the morals and ethics, if it is legal, or you can get the law changed that is all that matters, do what you need to. But probably seen to much Dan Pena. He has a much catchier way of putting it.
