Total loss of all basic motor skills, blurred vision, no balance, numb tongue - the mind recoils in horror, unable to communicate with the spinal column. Which is interesting, because you can actually watch yourself behaving in this terrible way, but you can't control it.

    • @georgkiesbauer337
      @georgkiesbauer337 Před rokem +4

      Koh and Naoh dont really prevent the formation of peroxides, from what i read they make alkali metal peroxides fall out of solution. So if you destill your ether ( what you should do regularly) you dont end up with a concentrated solution of your peroxides. Alkali metals and other stabilisers seem to reduce the peroxides.

    Love the videos and your sense of humor! Especially, the BYU peroxide crystals! Having seen their safety “measures” I gotta say I’m not exactly surprised.
    One little suggestion I might give (by no means a critique) is to lower your thermometer down further into the neck of the distillation head. Lowering the bulb ensures good contact with the vapors and the temp difference of a few cm that close to the head is theoretical at best. When I was an Ochem TA we noticed a lot of students getting really varied temps on their distillations, so we had them lower their thermometers and the problem disappeared. Might be why you had some ether come over before the boiling point.
    Keep up the good work I always look forward to watching your videos!

    WATCH TIL THE END PEOPLE!
    I am glad you gave me that last bit of information that I had not thought of. 2 days ago I did a fractional distillation of like 9 cans of starting fluid. Took me all day. First 3 cans I stored in plastic reagent bottles my wife brought me from the lab she works at. Before I was done collecting the next 3 cans worth, it had made those plastic bottles porous and looking like frosted glass; the plastic had cracked and it had leaked out into my freezer. Yay! So I cleaned it up and continued on and have stored all of my ether into a 2000mL flask until my glass reagent bottles arrive from Amazon. BUT I did not put any NaOH in the flask. 😮😅

    Only BHT can inhibit peroxide formation - additionally to dark storage. The hydroxides can remove peroxide if already formed.
    And ether has to be tested on peroxides with a acidified iodide solution everytime before heated.
    Where possible DEE should be substituted by MTBE which cannot form peroxides, is slightly less volatile and therefore less flammable - otherwise you also need a dark, continously cold and xplosion safe place to store the DEE (a normal kitchen fridge isn't such a place...).

Also, next time, instead of spraying, penetrate the can (carefully, small hole. Cool down the can) & let the propellant gas out, then pour it into your flask. You'll get more of the starting fluid out, and waste less.

    That picture of the crystals at 5:18 is not diethyl ether peroxide. Diethyl ether peroxide is a brown sticky goo - it doesn't form solid crystals like that. That could have been something like THF but why was it yellow? That honestly looked like a nitropropene/ nitroaldol result.

    • @chemdelic
      @chemdelic  Před rokem

      That’s what the source had down for peroxide formation. Interesting that Diethyl ether is a goo. Usually peroxide formation has any of the following
      − Crystals
      − Cloudiness
      − String-like formations
      − Stratification
      So that’s interesting!

    • @refluxcatalyst7190
      @refluxcatalyst7190 Před rokem

      @@chemdelic A lot of ethers (especially the cyclic ones like THF) form crystalline peroxide solids, and are genuinely scary. They follow the scheme you proposed - you aren't wrong at all. Solid ether peroxides like to collect under the threads of the cap of the bottle/jar it's kept it and detonate when unscrewed. Diethyl ether peroxide isn't like that, it won't explode on you even if its been sitting in an oxygen environment for a year (for a crazy example). It doesn't form a crystal, and is genuinely like a tan/amber goo, sort of like what BHO from a marijuana extract looks like. Yeah it's super flammable and sort of unstable - yes all of those things - but because it's technically still in a liquid state it's not friction sensitive, and just stays a sticky amber goo.
      That does not mean one can be ambivalent about ether peroxides though, because more or less every other common ether (maybe not MBTE) other than diethyl is sketchy and solid. Except benzyl peroxides that are used as polyester resin catalysts, but those still burn readily.

  • @NicholasA231
    @NicholasA231 Před rokem +1

    From my experience with several different starting fluids, including a couple "50%“ advertised ones, you were probably better off keeping the first fraction separate, and fractioning the 40-70° bit, as by 40° you're already at ~20% heptane, and by 50° it's ~50% (mol%). And that's the VLE on N-heptane, but most of the content is branched chain with a lower BP, and probably comes over at even higher rate when much above the ether BP. Basically your ether is probably like 1/3+ alkanes. I never end up with more ether than alkanes. The 70-90° components are typically the majority of the volume. With a good column the “50%“ stuff usually gets close to 50% in volume of pretty pure ether, but not quite. Adding cold to a 2-neck through a straw/gas adapter with the setup already assembled and keeping condenser and receiver ice cold helps measurably (but not dramatically) with losses.

      NO2 is Nitrogen Dioxide and it’s a brown poisonous gas with fatal consequences… N2O on the other hand is a semi-enjoyable inhalant that is possibly the shortest acting narcotic ever
