  • In this episode I am riding to Dawson City in Canada. This town and all the infrastructure this far north into the Yukon would not have existed without the discovery of gold in 1896. It was the start of the Yukon Gold Rush and I didn't realize, that 125 years later .. they are still mining gold here.

A dredge for someone from the Netherlands has to have to have echoes of home. I remember Noraly visiting an abandoned dredge in Argentina too. Noraly, having been to the Netherlands frequently -- including a couple of weeks ago -- I often saw women who resemble you! Classic facial features that I admire and the same accented English. So, Europe has ridden with you for years. You are an Ambassador who will be remembered and celebrated for years. Congratulations on your remarkable "go-with-the-flow" attitude, which I hope will serve as a model for all who will dare in the near future.

So many descriptives can be applied to Noraly. Such a full life she lives. Tom and I have watched her from beginning to now and have not been disappointed. Her engaging personality and her knowledge base serves her well. She has taken us to so many places that I know, that I will ever be able to go to so I go in spirit with Noraly and have fun and adventure filled time. At times Tom and I are startled with her bravery!

Noraly - No doubt you are hearing this over and over again, but you CANNOT be so close and not ride the Dempster- 773 km of gravel with one stop-off; an incredible experience.
My buddy and I did it in 2006; he on a Kawasaki 650 and I a BMW GS650 - the ride of a lifetime. Don't miss it! If you do, every time you tell someone you rode to Alaska, their first question will be "Did you ride the Dempster?" Best wishes

I drove up all through this area back in 2009 but my memory is terrible and have very patchy recollection of some of these places. So good to relive it through these videos. I remember all the dredgers near Dawson and the funny little border post on the way to Chicken. Kyle is a fantastic guide - knowledgeable and articulate. Great episode.

Hey Noraly, Those mounds of gravel are actually called tailing piles. Pretty sparse population now. Hard to imagine 100,000 people headed to Dawson City back when gold was first discovered. Even having 30 to 40,000 people in the area is hard to comprehend. Ans so to the buckets so full that gold was spilling out and over. WOW. Thanks for your investigation and sharing.
