I was very glad to hear Dan address the relationship topic. Meaning (to use his words) human "selfish desire to maintain the current relationship with Fiona..." but that is not what is best for her". Her care team deserve so much credit for handling Fiona and her needs in the most unselfish way imaginable.
@Margaret Temple Yes!!! And many exotic wild animals die, live in horrible conditions in private residences, and end up in captivity for life because people selfishly take them from the wild where they should and need to be and try to make them their house pets! Not to mention how may innocent people are killed or maimed.
I agree, I think that they truly wanted what was best for her and you can see them walking the line extremely well by taking themselves out of the picture more and more and taking those "leaps of faith" reintroducing her to bb and Henry etc. They really bring up a good point about the imprinting time period for hippos and how important that is. I know that they can never know for sure, but I would like to believe that bb knew Fiona was hers❤️❤️
@@everydaycliche1529 I would like to think Bibi did also. She seemed to know that she couldn't care for Fiona since she was easily distracted with food which allowd keepers in to assess and finally intervene. Normally not even a favorite food would have distracted a mother from her calf and to the extent keepers were allowed in to handle Fiona. But there were a couple of hrs before keepers intervened that would have given both Fiona and Bibi to become familiar with at least their scents. And Fiona's area was kept close to the enclosure so she could get used to the sounds and smells. I would imagine but am not positive Bibi could have still picked up on Fiona's scent from time to time. And you are right. They did an outstanding job walking that fine line. That could not have been easy for them but they always made sure what they did was what was best for Fiona.
After raising her, looking after her everyday and having that relationship, I really think Dan and Jenna are there for life. I could never leave her, even if I won the lottery.
@@jackycook64 LOL Animals are way better at that than human... animal moms know damn well when its their baby. and BB knew Fiona was her baby. Even if she didnt, animals have amazing maternal instincts. Either way BB knew Fiona was a baby in need of a mom.
I like how they slowly close their mouth to let the kid know "hey i wanna close my mouth you need to back up baby"
That mouth can bite a crocodile in half! It's incredible to see BB stay so very still and gentle that tiny Fiona has nothing to fear.

Isn’t it incredible how their instincts are just in their DNA?? Fiona was raised by humans as they said before, but she knew exactly what to do, her instincts just kicked in naturally! Animals are incredible!
This also explains Bibi’s current behavior in keeping Fiona at a distance from her new baby until she knows it’s safe.
We are animals too. Newborn human babies actually have a dive reflex - if you drop a newborn in water it automatically holds its breath
But do we know the route of a migration that is thousands of kilometres long. Do newborn babies know how to do such a migration. Monarch butterflies and many other fascinating animals and insects travel such long distances and how they do it there are theories but it’s not how they do it that’s the matter it’s more important to see how and the power in how these animals are being inspired by some way. Instinct okay but that’s basically for believers in God, God inspiring them because to travel such a long way without ever having gone that route before without ever getting majorly lost and knowing when the storms come and the shortcuts etc is all extremely precise and complex. Indeed these are signs for those who understand.

The closest comparison I could make would be pre installed software on a computer.
The easiest way to explain it is that somehow DNA codes for specific neural networks to form within the brain at an early stage of development which define basic behaviors that we loosely term 'instincts'.
The same way we cannot explain exactly why cats seem to react with apoplexy towards something as mundane as a cucumber without infering that pre formed neural networks are causing it to identify the shape as a danger - probably because it resembles a snake.
It never occurred to me that I can put the words “hippo” and “ pretty” together. But whenever I see Fiona that is the first thing comes to my mind. She is so pretty.

It always sounded to me like BB has a pretty good maternal instinct. Some animals have it, some don’t. BB may or may not have realized Fiona was her baby, but she sure knew Fiona was a baby that had no other adult mom hippo with her. So BB went ahead and filled in that role. Plus you guys gave them enough time to safely bond which obviously really helped
We will never know but I believe that BB is perfectly aware that Fiona is her daughter, that the zoo team saved her life and gave her back to her after the danger's gone. Hippos are sensitive and clever animals.
For those who don't know, I add that they are the most closely relative mammals to cetaceans, forming with them the group cetancodonts.

Fiona is so extremely lucky that she was born in a place where her needs and wellbeing are all that matters. From sleeping with her as a newborn to letting her go and be with her parents, her keepers were willing to do it all. She can expect a happy hippo life with the best care and best hippo environment she can be given and Cincinnati zoo keepers are the reason for that. Wonderful people.

It’s March 2020, I’m watching this series while being stuck in my house while the rest of the country and other countries are under quarantine.

Fiona is adorable, yes. But I just love the staff of the zoo. Seeing people who wholeheartedly love their jobs makes me happy.

Fiona is just the cutest little baby doll hippo. We don't see many videos of humans and their hippos. So these videos are a real gem for many of us. I myself, have NEVER had the opportunity see a real hippo. Our zoo does not have any. We have 2 big beautiful rhinos though, but alas, no hippos. Fiona is darling. May she grow healthy, strong and good tempered. May she live a long long and prosper at that zoo that saved her life. She is precious.

Fiona is doing very well - last time I checked, she was up to 1,300 pounds!😊 . She just celebrated her 3rd birthday on January 24th

It warms my heart how this zoo is so invested in the wellbeing of the creatures they house. Mad props, not only to the keepers but also to the management/board.
I can definitely understand how these incredible animals are considered one of the most dangerous in the wild. They look incredibly placid but they can become protective, defensive or aggressive in the blink of an eye. But damn Fiona is a cute little wet leather bag with ears that resemble humming birds when being flipped or fluttered. Lol!

This episode is one of my favorites!!! I love how you put them together in a responsible way and didn’t let your human emotions hinder that relationship between the calf and the parents. I believe they all benefited from that and when the new calf is born they hopefully will get along just as well. Love your work with these impressive animals. ❤️
Their outside enclosure is really beautiful, crystal clear water and lovely waterfalls. The poor hippo in the zoo near me has a dirty mucky small pond and cant go completely below the water because it isnt deep enough.
That was so cool to watch Mom and Dad spend time and bond with their little girl Fiona, or Shrek,Fiona and baby Fiona.thank you guys so,so, much for sharing this wonderful story with us.

I've been watching videos about orcas and then my feed suggested this series about baby hippo Fiona. I wasn't going to watch, supposed it would be not for me - too sentimental - but I'm glad I did. This is a fascinating story and has great footage of hippos under water. Staff at Cincinnati zoo have my respect and thanks for their wonderful contributions to making the world a better place
Such an amazing story. All that Fiona has been through just to be alive and to be reunited with her parents and get to be a regular playful happy lil hippo. Just so beautiful to see them be a happy little family now. Great job to all the people who worked with them and for saving lil Fiona. This moment wouldn't have been possible without them

Hippos are quite intelligent, kinda how Rhinos intelligence are underestimated, and their social interactions are much more complex and civilized than you would expect.

Such a sweet and educational video. Great work everyone at Cincinnati zoo 😊 they seem like nice and caring poeple.
And what a great job they did with Fiona! (Including calling on nurses for help when they weren't able to give her an I/V.) It couldn't possibly have gone better! And when there was no previous case like this with a baby hippo born so prematurely, so they had to figure it out as they went along·from what to feed her, to teaching her how to swim to handling the introductions with her parents. Bravo!

This is amazing footage. I never knew about how important their mouths are to each other, but it was cute as heck to see the baby exploring her mothers mouth. I thought it was cool too when Mom started to gently close her mouth to let the baby know she needed to come out so that Mom could relax her jaws a bit. I hope that she and Fiona continue to bond and thrive.
