  • Please do not practice draw cuts with a live blade for your first attempts as there is a risk of cutting hand or arm, especially if it is not done in a smooth motion, always train with a bokken first until you are comfortable.

Today I practiced my draw cutting on newspaper rolls with 5 newspapers rolled into them. I hope you enjoy the video. I am not an expert and this is pretty clear from my downwards draw cuts, I don't slice through the target enough to extend the cutting angle. I hope you stick with me to see my progress. The side and diagonal views are mirrored because of the camera they were taken on.
    Tameshigiri targets
-Newspaper-these are more forgiving on edge alignment but require more power and a proper acceleration through the target. The target difficulty can be adjusted based on rolling tightness and number of papers in the roll

Nice job! I do more European swords myself,(there isn't any draw cutting) but this was very interesting to watch!

Do you have any tips with getting your grip strength stronger with the katana? I want to do what you did in the video but I feel like I'm not strong enough. My katana is a lot longer (40 inches total, 27 inch blade) though.

Train with a bokken. I do draw strikes with my katana too but it's an unsharpened one for training.
Also I do an exercise with the sword in hand and just flick it forward from the wrist and stop it. Then repeat a million times. That builds a lot of grip strength for accelerating and decelerating swords and after doing that for a while I felt confident my sword wouldn't fly out of my hand no matter what I was doing. Hope that helps, best of luck training!

Do we need to move the saya when we draw the sword? Since your katana is short so we don’t need to move it right? Mine is quite long tho

I still do move the saya. When I draw my whole left hip moves backwards. As you stated, the wakizashi is a lot shorter so it's a far less pronounced movement. I do the same with my katana just with a larger movement at the hip. Some schools will teach you to move the saya in and out of the belt but it's not how I was taught. I suppose I'd struggle with a far longer blade like a nodachi though

I'll see what I can do. I practice indoors so will need to think of a set up or find an outdoors training area. I'll try and make it happen in the next few weeks

He should get himself a skilled iaido teacher, he don´t have any idea about how to use a Japanese sword the correct way. The way he is drawing the sword is awful, he is damaging the scabbard and could suddenly break the scabbard so that it splits on the side that is up against where the sword has it´s sharp side so he seriously injures his own hands. He does not know how to make chiburi (the actions of bringing the sword back to the scabbard, he does not know how to turn the scabbard in the right position before cutting, he does not know how to move the body and draw the body in the side where he have the scabbard backwards when drawing the sword. Please don´t learn Japanese swords techniques from this young man, it could cause severe damaged to your body if performed with a sharp japanese sword (Katana or Wakizashi) It is a purely amateur performance.

i would love to see you stop attempting to scare new trainees away from the art, nobody starts out a master and he will surely learn from his mistakes.
