That's not too bad. It is only a 3rd level spell after all. You could homebrew a 5th+ level spell called "Greater Dispel Magic" that works on all magical effects.
Well...for once I'm glad I took the spell's name at face value, because I very much do not limit it based on spells in my games. The rest of the spell's description, I do follow, though.
I watched this video about 4 times last night. I was so tired that my brain couldn’t make sense of it. I’ve watched it 3 more times since then and my brain keeps breaking each time. All I could think of is if it was the only thing to stop the “kill all enemies” spell. 😅
For an animated armour, it still works. The animated armour statblock specifically says that it is affected in that way and can be targeted by dispel magic, as dispel magic says “target one creature, object or magical effect” then says “any spell of 3rd level or lower on the target ends” rather than “target one creature, object, or magical effect affected by a spell of 3rd level or lower”. That means even though it may not have any magic on them, it can still be affected. Specific beats general in dnd and If your DM disagrees with it, use any spell then cast dispel magic (my favourite is slow; though it may be over kill for animated armour and there’s always fireball)
@@RobertHartleyGMThe animated armour’s animatic susceptibility says “if targeted by dispel magic, the armour must succeed on a constitution saving throw or be knocked unconscious for 1 minute” In the dispel magic description, it doesn’t say that the creature or object has to actually be affected by a spell of 3rd level or lower, it just says creature. Unlike stuff like stuff like disintegrate that can’t go through wall of force (as wall of force is invisible and disintegrate requires a target you can see) dispel magic does not say anywhere in it that the creature or object needs to actually be affected by a 3rd level spell or higher, meaning the animated armour’s specific case is still valid. However, a wand of fireballs has no clause that says dispel magic does anything to it, so that one still works
@dew-it8744 I cede that because specific beats general, and animated armor specifies dispel magic does a thing, you are right about that, but not because of your other argument. "Target a ___" is just about who or what you can target with the spell, not who/what you can affect with it. "Any spell of 3rd level or lower ends" is the affect of the spell. So if animated armor didn't specify in their stat block that dispel magic works, Dispel Magic would do nothing to it RAW.
@@RobertHartleyGM it does specify that it works. It says “if targeted by dispel magic, the armour…”. You can target a creature or object that doesn’t have a magical effect as it says “choose one creature, object or magical effect within range” then says “Any spell of 3rd level or lower on the target ends” You target them first, then the effect happens. Effectively it’s like targeting a creature with charm monster but they’re immune against charm. You still targeted them, it just didn’t work. For the animated armour, it is targeted by dispel magic and thus the anti magic susceptibility kicks in, then it ends any spell of 3rd level or lower if it had any.
@dew-it8744 You and I are arguing different points now. Yes, We are in agreement that it works on an animated suit of armor. However, if it did not have 'Antimagic Susceptibility', like Animated Statue, for instance, Dispel Magic would have no effect on it. You could target the statue but there is no 3rd level or lower spell that is affecting it so nothing happens. It only works on the Animated Armor because of the 'Antimagic Susceptibility' feature.
I would argue that casting a spell from a wand is a "spell" because it's a device with spells stored in it that somebody needed to cast in order to store and confine those spells. By using the wand, you're simply releasing that spell into the world.
@@RobertHartleyGM Smiles is Suggestion but only to smile. Secrets is a modified Detect Traps that requires the wand as a component more or less. Animated Suits are the targets of upgraded Animate Objects or maybe True Polymorph allows creatures turned into armor to move the armor.
@@rexosuitmk2577 I suppose this is where the line between RAW and logic goes. If magic items just stores "spells" why Items description is not specified it?
Ah, the lost potential when they didn't call it Dispel Spell: "I shall now use Dispel Spell to dispel dis spell."
it ought to be called "Dispel Spell" then, wouldn't you say? orrrr... perhaps even just.... "diSPELL" 😁

I love that you find all these little inconsistencies. I guess you can fix them all in your games with homebrew rules. 👍🏼
WotC should hire you.
Also, pretty shirt.
Thanks! Was from my old job at the zoo

Can we rename these from "Robert Rants" to "Robert Speaks the Truth to Some Developers That Should Have Known Better!"
If it's not a spell, it's not magic.
!ez
So if you up cast it, can it get rid of the guardian of faith!
If you upcast it high enough, it can get rid of any spell!
So, it should be named 'Dispel Spell'.
DiSpell...
Is there an alternate spell that would remove other types of magic, in the same way that hold monster covers things that hold person cannot?
Maybe antimagic field?
