It's so intresting to see your take on Good Years because the song is actually about One Direction and more spefically about Zayn's feelings while and after being in the band
Did he ever say that it was about one direction? I thought that it was about his and perries relationship
@@mercifalHe has never said what the song is about, but many believe it's about 1D. I see and interpret it like he fears he wasted the best years of his life being in the eyes of the public (which is very sad to say the least).
Reference to 1D can be in this line as well: “I close my eyes and see a crowd of a thousand tears”
I think it's a reference to his time on stage with 1D, looking out at fans in the crowd.
@anonyymi1005 I think it's more he wasted his creative/ artistic youth into somethinghe didn't fully 100 percent believe or adhere to... pretending to be happy or ok for 5 years takes it toll. His r n b songs were rejected in 1D and no one really asked for his input musically, lyrically. The 1D demographic were mostly white children who would not understand r&b, hip hop,rap, soul, Bollywood and qawwali.
Artists like Billie Eilish, Lorde, Justin Bieber got to do their own solo work at a young age, zayn missed that important time frame of musical presence, and exposure. Unfortunately like athletes there's a sliver of time frame and for some artists its in their teens to 20s...that burst of energy, drive, creativity, having something to say, audiences wanting to hear.
I think zayn feels he missed that moment because his peak, youthful energy was syphoned into pop music machine that was 1D. Look how his life force dwindled from early 1D to 5 years later. Light gone from his eyes, went from a happy, loud, jovial chap to a melancholic, reserved, quiet young man with an eating disorder, anxiety and depression.
Plus 1D cut off his wings creatively, he wanted to spread his wings farther than pop, generic music and try artistic ventures but 1D always refuted him saying it "wasn't their sound". That's awful for an artist to be held back from lack of vision of others, to be limited, to be caged, and boxed in. To only be forced to think of commerciality, capitalistic revelance, sales, number, tour tickets sold. In Zayn's autobiography he states he is not interested in that stuff or holds it as a successful outcome. Success for him is doing the art he likes and believes in whether or not it garners commercial success or not.
Unfortunately this society only values youth. i see how older musicians are forgotten, treated poorly, made fun of. Them creating and releasing new music doesn't garner the attention it did.
The wasted years Zayn sings about are those youthful creatively explosive, spontaneous, first-time experiences, dynamic, energetic, ambitious, driven young years

Entertainer was written by a Brazilian woman songwriter called Iliana Nedialkova (lol villain and petty), her voice is included on the track. Zayn added some lyrics to the song.

My interpretation of what he’s saying in You Wish You Knew is like he doesn’t want to be the one that a girl chooses to be with just because she wishes she knew him. Doesn’t want to put his love in her if it’s not for real. Doesn’t want to make a headline that they’re dating and then she leaves him because she didn’t really love him. Doesn’t want to be chosen just because she wishes she knew him but doesn’t actually care about knowing him, he’d rather have someone be with him for the right reasons. That’s how I’ve always interpreted it but I also hear it in the way of the paparazzi, always trying to get in his business and wishing they knew him

the album very simply is divided into icarus falling in love and then falling out of it.. but in a more human context. like a man falling in love with a woman who felt ethereal to him and he felt like they would share forever but he finds out she played him or wasn't quite into the relationship like he was. and the last 3 songs he wants to get back with her so its kinda toxic.. like icarus's love for the sun was. good years does indeed feel like a 1D song.. also it is fan speculation that it is about how he felt about being a part of them (if you knew anything about 1D history you'll agree too).
