He fell in love with her and had the strength and will to let her go. Her being so superficial with his feelings irritated me to be honest. Although he acted like a jerk, he still wasn't as selfish and as arrogant as he showed to others. I really admire this character and he deserved a better ending than a hurtful heartbreak :(
