Jocko really is a renaissance man. He can kill the enemy and recite poetry while doing it.
A British solider went to prison for that, well he quoted Shakespeare.
He went to prison for quoting Shakespeare while fighting in a war or killing someone outside of combat?
Maybe I phrased that badly!! The person he killed was injured and he stood over him, quoted a Shakespeare line and then finished him off. He was charge and convicted of murder. He's since been relesaed from prison. I don't think it's an offense to quote Shakespeare in battle.
@@tilikumtim5562 Although I disagree with him being arrested, he made the mistake of admitting on camera that he was breaking the Geneva convention.
The Contra reference and analogy was one of the funniest moments ever on the podcast. And it made sense and worked. Good one, Echo.
41:40 That's my video Jocko! Glad that you guys enjoyed it. This is super awesome! Greetings from Switzerland (not Germany, but close). :-)

Jocko's video game would involve friendly fire, mass casualties and realistic scenarios. It would be the only game where you get points for being squared away and taking extreme ownership. There may also be an interactive dynamic where Jocko appears on your screen and commands you to give him push-ups, burpees, squats and pull-ups for spending all day playing his game.
The real catch is that you will only have one life per player per game. When you die, the game shuts down and you have to buy a whole new game package. Why? Because there are no do-overs in war. Before the game self destructs, you'll get a debriefing by Jocko with the final order to do burpees until you vomit while you detach and think about what you could have done better.
What do you all think the name of his game would be? "Stand by to get some: Discipline equals freedom."
I'm literally rolling laughing at this. This is pure gold
Haha

Arma 3
Apollo's Sons, Part 1
Take your burden upwards and maybe we win together
Apollo's Sons, Part 2
No, this is not the enemy you are looking for!
Apollo's Sons, Part 3
Civil war and retribution.
Apollo's Sons, Part 4 - Final
The sins of the living against their dead, and the closure which we can attain
Thanks Jocko and Echo changing my life one podcast at a time. Peace Jimmy G
"If" can also be summarized today in another word: GOOD
'IF' has resonated with me for years. It always reappears to remind me of its lessons. Thank you.
That Contra bit really hits home, it does require an amount of grit and determination to stick with the game at high levels.
" if you can think and not make thoughts your aim" I heard don't suffer from paralysis by analysis. anybody else?
I didn't. I thought of it more like "keep your mind open to information without doing so to cement your opinion"
A person who thinks all the time has nothing to think about except thoughts.
I approve of the number of times the word 'knave' was used in this podcast.
Jocko's semi-prepared remarks starting at 1:50:10 are always some of the most powerful and valuable statements I've ever heard in my life, and that's no exaggeration. I honestly spend all week looking forward to that moment in the podcast which usually starts with "we have time for one more question" and is followed by the most profound remarks that simply cut straight to the heart of the issue and put the situation in absolute clear focus. There is no ambiguity left after Jocko's speeches - the path forward is laid out for us plainly. Those brief yet acutely authentic speeches that litter the Jocko Podcasts are, without a doubt, pure gold.
The poem itself is unambiguous.
Thank you Jocko and Echo for helping me develop into a better man and apple what you teach me in my life. It’s priceless to me and I love you guys
Recap: naves are gonna hate. Break the wrist, walk away.
Great episode! Lots of wisdom and hilarious at the same time
Some of this poem was read in the movie Apocalypse Now.
I was just listening to this poem the other day while lifting. Yes I listen to poetry sometimes while lifting. What are the chances you guys do a podcast about it. That's awesome.
Thank you Jocko. Enjoying your book and sharing with our team. The poem IF spoke to me today. Thank you for your time and passion.
"If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;"
this stanza of the poem is so powerful, so Nietzschean in nature that it equates to Nietzsche's concept of Amor Fati and the eternal return. Subtle, yet so dam hard to live a life from this perspective. This is what defines a warrior; to never regret, never ask for a mulligan...accept your fate and move on. One does not need to have worn a uniform to be a warrior in the eyes of Nietzsche and Kipling. I have to believe Kipling was influenced by the writings of Nietsche and pehaps by the Stoics such as Epictetus, Seneca and others.
Hi Jocko
I doubt you will ever see this, but if you do, thank you. I never thought that I could learn moral or intellectual lessons from a solider, but your experiences and life lessons that you share with your audience I am finding very valuable, and am growing in respect for you with each listening. I think I am getting smarter listening to you!!!
Thank you.
Echo Charles with a contra reference........EPIC!
That reading of the Poem just changed my life.
Jocko, listening to you is helping me beat my opiates addiction that started in the army. Thank you good sir.
I’ve heard that poem before and it truly is brilliant to abide by
Always killing it. You guys are awesome!
That humble confidence is a tough one, but a truly powerful trait to have.
1:50:34 needs to be the next bad ass Echo Edit clip!
Jocko, your advice is the best. Hands down no competition.
I've been waiting all week for this :)
Thank you..top five favorite of mine..great to hear it.
My mother had my brother and I memorize “If” when were were in elementary school. I forgot about it through the years. But, it has definitely influenced who I am.
Good evening gentlemen.
First heard this recited by Chris Eubank on Ariel Helwani's MMA Hour in the build up to the McGregor - Mayweather fight - worth a listen.
Echo, can you cut a clip of Jocko reading 'IF' on it's own, this is the best version I've heard. So much motivation in just that.
The best podcast in the year
"talk with crowds and keep your virtue, or walk with kings nor lose the common touch" ; love this line.
You should be able to speak to large groups without diluting the truth for mass appeal or lowest common denominator, and you should be able to mix with elites yet not live in their bubble.
Absolutely wonderful poem
Please do a cut version of this video with Jocko reading the poem. Good, powerful stuff.
Echo's intellect is unassuming. Not everyone knows Mars is cold.
I read this poem back in senior year of high school (class of 2013).
Love this poem !!!!
36:55. I think it's more than just about rebuilding your life's work. To take it a step further I think it's rebuilding your life's work but making it better as you're in the process of rebuilding. It collapsed for a reason, and I know and accept that sometimes those reasons and circumstances that cause the collapse are out of your control, but it's worthwhile to take the collapse as Jocko would put it, "An opportunity to get better" and learn from it and improve.
'I dig it and it probably be a pretty heavy game' I laughed so hard out loud people looked at me....keep up the awesome work guys
This also happened to me. Twice.
It was valueable (reading the poem that "everybody knew") because people from outside of US, or english speaking world, don't know it.
Like me, from Poland 🙂👍
Great one, Thanks !
Even more hitting now that I have a small son 😊
nice to be reminded of contra! jocko might like arma 3 i think.
was wondering if Echo was going to bring up the code. And then he did.
Arma 3 with RHS, ACE3 Advanced Medical, TFAR, and Massi_Devgru hahah would blow his mind I bet.
@echocharles make a short of the poem portion of this podcast!!
Jocko's Tony Robbins impression lol 1:26:33
10 mins of Contra, love it
Get some
I came here from Akira the Don music video of Jocko reading If 🙂
Good one to check out 👍

A,B,B,A Brings you back everytime regardless
"day late and a dollar short" I likes dat.
Echo @39:00 was killin me
Also that poem is powerful
Awesome podcast guys! Here in the UK, students at Manchester University, recently scrubbed Kipling's poem "If" from the wall, calling him a racist. It made the News here. . Sad!
The first interactive game to feature a boss was dnd, a 1975 role-playing video game for the PLATO system.
Great poem
jocko saying i haven't even started yet makes me want to go get after it.
how would my life be like IF i didnt have skinny knees???
this podcast always makes me wonder about becoming the best version of me
Thank u Team Jocko
Bro I'm a fatass too just do more pushups everyday starting with the most you can do on the first day.
A,B,B,A in Contra is how we did it
I thought they were going to talk about “if” as in Intermittent fasting. Maybe one day.. btw if you haven’t researched Intermittent Fasting, you should. It’s changed my life, and many others, in the most positive way imaginable.
I couldn't help imagining the Contra guy running with his spread gun while Jocko read this line again at the end:
"...And lose, and start again at your beginnings..."
Oh my word yall r crackin me up
Echo awe man she shaved her head she’s getting over me fast
We need a knave t-shirt o
in the Jocko store asao
"How about "Charge of the Light Brigade"? The real story and Tennyson's poem?
First time I've heard Jocko use a voice.
“End Boss” or “Big Boss” is 100% a video game reference and generally refers to character who is LARGE, who is strong and tough to defeat and who has ... technique... that you have never seen before (unless you’re Dean Richard Lister) that leads to your immediate and guaranteed fatal end. These bosses typical subsist only on Mölk and Jocko White Tea. Jocko although it is difficult to grasp these games are for children (looking at you echo) who need to know it’s ok to make mistakes so long as you learn from them (3 lives, no continues) and more importantly that the guns always get bigger.
Put that poem read by Jocko on Psych Warfare. Shook me right out of inaction.
Get after it 💪☯️
38:12
I lost it. So funny.
1:50:15 is Epic
Which podcast is boots poem, I can’t remember, any help?
Jocko you ever watch Medal of Honor Book on the CZcams? Also has anyone ever called you Jerko? That would be luxurious! Thanks
Where you been??
Jocko interrupts Echo a lot.
I noticed that too
Because he gets off track from the subject, breaks the flow of the conversation and half the time sounds like he doesn't even know what he's going to say.
"conversation" takes at least two people. When it's just Echo around, Jocko is often not interested in conversation.
@@mangumatt ive been wondering for a tactful way to put it . its like this . jocko is on level A. echo is on level E, what level do you think they relate at and thus what level is the conversation? a C.. jocko needs an A level sidekick, - well a B would be most comfortable i suspect
echo is sometimes irrelevant
Sorry, Echo Charley ... I have a Konami Contra arcade machine right here, and I didn't know the code. :(
100%!!
Good 'ol Contra Code.
We all need to get Jocko a Nintendo.?
Hahaha yeah I'm sure he'll use it
Theo great 👍
-Do you remember the game Contra?
-NO...
"...teach you about human loss..."
"...I dig it, and that would probably be a heavy game, but..."
Wisdom
to add to Kipling's poem I will add Message from Mr Cogito from Polish writer Herbert www.visegradliterature.net/works/pl/Herbert%2C_Zbigniew-1924/Przesłanie_Pana_Cogito/en/5289-The_Message_of_Mr_Cogito perhaps You will like it Jocko
Jocko "break the wrist, walk away" Willink
Bless your heart; some of us did not find out about you or your work until the 3rd. or 4th addition of your early books. I heard you on Jordon B. Peterson and I think Glenn Beck and am now catching up. Are you sure you want me to feel like a third rate loser for not having your first addition of your early books? I am sure you did not mean to do anything but welcome those of us who are later arrivals, right? ;)
48:00 👍
Is Echo pounding back a Monster?
It's Jocko's energy drink.
Mess Deck Master at Arms
Oooohhhhhhh motherfucking rahhhhh marine semper fi jocko and echo do more about ww2 and Vietnam thanks u guys much respect
Christ has taken ownership for all of humanity. His sword is of the Spirit and sharper than any blade.
I hope We see Jocko in the after. Do you know if he's said either way what his beliefs are?
Tim McClymont
Ive never heard him talk about it, and ive never heard anyone ask, but Extreme Ownership would be even more miraculous if it was written without them keeping Christ in mind.
In some ways it seems that Jocko's philosophy is written specifically for Christians. Accept ownership of life, discipline yourself to achieve freedom from sin, and simply do what you know is the right thing to do.
35:58 stoop and rebuild your life's work with worn out tools.. legit :)
The codes spread threw magazines electronics employees and friends
Got to get Goggins on
