I don't agree completely, but there's something to what you say. Forty years ago violent crime was mainly confined to the ghettos. There was no computer news to give updated robbery and shooting totals, and the city was much more segregated than now. Since then entire neighborhoods have turned, segregation has been significantly reduced, and whites find themselves much more likely to experience violent robberies and even murders. That's what's driving national interest in the mayhem, sad to say. The networks realize that Chicago violence now has a national "fan club," and so cover major crime events all over the city to get more "hits."
