San Gabriel Mission | Then and Now

This adventure will take us to Mission San Gabriel. Learn the history and see the sights that this mission has to offer. It is the fourth mission in California Mission system and was built in 1771. Each of the California Missions is unique and San Gabriel is no exception. It is believed to be the birthplace of the now thriving California wine industry or oldest winery in California. It is also home of the oldest cemetery in Los Angeles County. Other features include the De Anza Trail and the tannery vat. Join Kendall on his journey to look at the rich history and see what has been well preserved for visitors to see now. This is a great potential field trip and place for a family visit if you are trying to add perspective to California teaching standards for fourth (4th) grade history.

Thanks Kendall, I lived very near the mission for a few years, but I have not seen it since the restoration from damage caused by the Whittier Narrows Earthquake in '87 and fire damage in 2020. It appears as though they have done a wonderful job bringing the Mission back to its original beauty. Thank you again for the tour.

Kendall, I always learn something from you. I live not all that far from Mission San Gabriel, and the capped buttresses are what I've always loved most about it. But I didn't know about the connection to Cordoba Cathedral. Thank you again!

Very cool to hear that California viticulture started there. I need to go visit San Gabriel again. So many great exhibits and such that I don't remember from when I was there 20+ years ago.
