Yeah- a vlog of surfing, painting, and friends! I think the only thing missing was coffee and a burrito. Lol!

Looks so cool and fun. Here in Roma, Italy, its 39 C (Africa hot, literally) and very humid. Scenes like this really make me miss the west coast!
Santa Cruz is a great place for beach activities. I spent part of my honeymoon there. I remember the mist and warm breeze from the surf in November. After creeping over Donner Pass with chains following a snowplow, this area was so beautiful and relaxing. Eerie warm mist and sound of the breakers. Captured that on canvas.

I've just discovered your channel and I love how loose the whole thing is, from your actual painting to your commentary. I love how you "sorta put some...burnt sienna, or whatever that colour is, over there to sorta balance that...bluey shape, and then...kinda lighten this...purple or blue or whatever it is and then...it's kinda finished....maybe...." Really makes those that are looking to improve feel like painting doesn't have to be this strict, pretentious discipline, but can be fun experimentation where mistakes and disasters are valued just as much as successes. Thanks for sharing this stuff with us. Inspirational.

I love plein air painting, especially the natural sharing of creativity, just being around other artists.
I love painting with other artists as wel! Especially when the atmosphere is supportive and noncompetitive.
10:06 when you start to say water, ( colors value sky vs wa… “” then you seen the two bird shadows appear , moving upon the ground, just left of your paint brush , and in the composition view, cool place Michael, instructionally your verbal creativity.

That kid was tireless lol. I had to cut out major portions of the audio because of his hammering. 😂

Actually straw hats like this are sold in all the surf shops here in California. I can't even think of another option. Works well for painting too lol. Just curious, what sort of hat do you imagine surfers wearing? So glad you find my videos inspiring!
I am defending the hat. It is serviceable for the purpose, unpretentious, and has served you well. Reminds me of pictures of Monet.

Mixing surfing and painting is brilliant and watching your video just helps me get through the working day. I think baseball cap for immediate post-surfing, the painting hat probably needs to be wide brimmed but less battered appearance. Could your daughter advise? are we talking sponsorship? You paint in some fantastic locations and I go straight to your videos each week..

As usual a great painting and a great video loved seeing everybody's work. I like your blue green Gray for the ocean. It's so hard to determine the color of the ocean. Especially in the distance. When I first started painting in oils I could not figure out the color of the water. it was an evening sunset reflection beach scene and she said if you can't figure out the color ..it's gray. (Sorry I drank too much coffee this morning). But actually the question I wanted to ask you is why do you use purple from the tube when you have ultra and alizarin on your palate already.? Is that a convenience color or is there a particular reason for using that purple? Thanks so much for all your help your videos are excellent. I follow you on patreon just to give you some support. And hopefully someday maybe I'll be able to afford one of your paintings.

And what is with commenters hating on your hat? You have a great hat, stick with it! A straw hat is so much cooler than a baseball cap would be, and protects the neck and ears which is the actual purpose. Your attention to the art and utilitarian mindset about the rest is part of why you are authentic and fun to watch. Somehow you get over being self conscious (or at least appear that way) and it makes the viewer feel more comfortable too. Thanks for the surfing and the painting play date with friends. Thanks for the awesome hat and not trying to dress like one of the Backstreet Boys.

Can you share thoughts on a recommended camera? I’ve been painting for about 2 1/2 years. I’ve used my iPhone for landscape reference photos (mostly landscapes and buildings). Can you recommend a quality camera, one that perhaps could do decent videos as well as landscapes? I could spend $1000 but I’d like to stay closer to $500.
I apologize if you have addressed this already.
I use my iPhone now but I used to use a Canon Rebel. The iPhone is so much more convenient so I never use the Canon.
