Saw this late
Installed my CUE 2.5 upgrade last night. Went pretty smooth thanks to this video! The hardest part I had was finding a good place to mount the included GPS antenna (my car originally did not have factory navigation installed so required a GPS antenna for it to work) as I had to find somewhere above the metal frame in the dash and keep it under the windshield. I finally located a spot just to the front of and below the center speaker. The first problem was that the metal infrastructure of the dash is some kind of aluminum and the magnetic GPS antenna does not stick to it so I had to apply some double sided tape to make it work. The frame still works well as a metal base plate for the antenna, it just isn't a metal that the magnet works on. Getting the antenna to this location took a bit of trial and error as it is very small area to work with to get the antenna positioned on top of the frame and get the tale to stick so the antenna is facing up. I accessed this space by removing the dashboard center speaker cover. Once installed, I had to route the wire down into the dashboard so I could attach it to the HMI module. Getting the antenna situated and installed took the longest time. After that, it was just a matter of buttoning everything up and trying it out. Found out the location I picked for the GPS antenna works great though so no worries there. Two things I found out after the installation. First, even though the Nav system could find my current location in lat and long right away, when I pushed the button for local POI it said all the POIs were over 10,000 miles away. Also, I had no map at first so wasn't sure if it was working correctly or not. Not sure where this thing was put together but it thought the car was 10,000 miles away from any of the "local" areas. After driving around town and out on the country roads a while, the Nav system finally located and updated my position and then the map appeared with all my local roads and POIs. Even then though when I put in a route to my house which was only 5 miles from my location, the Nav system said I was over 10,000 miles from my destination. After driving about another 40 miles today, the mapping is spot on and everything is as it should be. The second thing was after connecting my battery back up and trying out the system, I noticed my ambient temperature on the screen was not working. All it showed was - - for temperature. After getting home from the drive I googled this and read that sometimes after disconnecting the power the ambient temperature won't show until a couple of start/stop cycles of the engine. Sure enough, when I started the car this morning to go on my second drive, my ambient temperature was working again. Tried Apple CarPLay and it is the bomb. Works great. One other point about the kit I got. It came with an upgraded USB plug module for the center console under the armrest. Some of the videos on CZcams show having to take apart the rear climate control panel and armrest to get to the plug. Found out this is not necessary and with the help of a plastic trim tool, you can push in the tabs on the side of the module and it slides right out of the hole. Once out, it's just a matter of unplugging the connections on the old USB module and plugging them into the new USB module. The new module then just pops into the hole and it's done. So in conclusion, had a great install and everything works as advertised. Sorry for the long ass comment but thought those of you out there thinking of doing this swap might benefit from what I found out here and not get worried when you turn it on and don't get a map at first, lose your ambient temp reading, or don't want to tear your center console apart to get to the USB switch. Hope you all have as great an experience as I did. I feel it was money well spent!

Came with new CUE 2.5 HMI, upgraded radio, and upgraded USB port (for CarPlay), and a GPS antenna (mine originally didn't have factory Nav). Some think the price is not worth it. For me, it was definitely worth it. However, the more I use the system, the more I like the factory navigation rather than the CarPlay nav.
Just received my package of goodies from GM Parts House. Ordered on the evening of 8/10/2020 so only took 8 days for programming and shipping! Can't wait to get started on this project. Have to wait until the weekend so I can work undisturbed. I'm updating a 2013 ATS that does not have NAV already so the only piece I need to do that's not in the video is figure out where to put the magnetic GPS antenna that came with it. Back to CZcams...CZcams knows all...
Finally did this upgrade, it is fantastic! The difference made by a responsive, new, non-gel screen, CUE 2.5, Android Auto and FLAC music from phone memory is a great improvement in car quality of life.

Years later but adding a comment to this. I just did this upgrade on a 2014 CTS with a CD player. Be sure you have the CD player plugged in when you turn the system on, otherwise you'll just have a black screen. I spent several hours frustrated that it wasn't working before I tried reconnecting the CD player wire and presto, it all worked. I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else, but it will make you feel that the upgrade failed if you leave it unplugged. Thanks for this video, it was a great resource to have.

I have an 14 ats with nav and I don’t mind cue at all. It has been slow or laggy or any of the other complaints I’ve heard. I use an sd card 32gb and 90% of the time I use steering wheel controls. But cue has been great.
Can't wait to get a 2014 to 2016 CTS and need that upgrade.

cateague I think I answered this question elsewhere but for the YT readers both modules need to be upgraded.
I upgraded ONLY the HMI and it worked just fine. Carplay and all. Everything worked as it should

Mine says climate control doesn't work while car is off when it's actually on. And I can't select the climate icon. Any idea why? After I installed the upgrade

I would check with the dealer about the problem first. Some 2016s already have this upgrade but I’m guessing yours doesn’t? If not, yours may just be freezing from its poor processing ability.
Screen freezing could a digitizer problem especially if parked out in the sun for long periods of time without a sunshade.

I'm a bit late to the party, but i finally got the 2.5 upgrade done on my 15 Premium. Question. With Android Auto engaged i lose the ability to navigate, skip or go to previous tracks using steering wheel controls however, volume is not affected.
Any theories on why that will happen or DIY fixes for it? I was only able to find one place online that say it's something with the instrument cluster and if I send it in they can fix. But my Caddy is my daily driver and that same company said the 2.5 upgrade wouldn't work without a new center console USB hub which it obviously does, it just cant charge worth a crap 😅

I’ve heard of the skip issue but not the navigate issue. You can’t navigate on google maps in Android? Who did your programming?
My bad, I misspoke. I was talking about navigating my playlists in music streaming apps. Navigation works fine and I can navigate playlists directly in CUE, but nothing in the instrument cluster. Similar to how you can navigate the OG iPod/iPhone connection. I have to admit I haven't driven a 2.5 CUE in years so I may be confusing functionality with current CUEs.
I got mine done at White Auto and Media. I went with them mainly because they have a more fleshed out FAQ than the competition, so I felt a bit more confident with their OEM solution.
I did order the JoyeAuto Max 5.0 device you reviewed some time back and I'll order a new USB cluster for the center console since Carplay is not working for an older iPhone I use as an iPod or my wife's iPhone 13.
@manifest78 yeah the cluster options don’t really work. I’m sorry I didn’t address that. It’s certainly a feature that was designed for the times and I don’t think they made an effort to make it compatible with newer technologies.
These days you need a modern phone and just use Siri to request artists or playlists.
@JetFuelOnly No worries at all and I totally agree! The way they lock out or make most upgrades so difficult seems like a major oversight. Oh well, a grand here and there for upgrades is way better than what it costs for a fully loaded CT5 V-Blackwing or CTS V Carbon Package. It's like taking baby steps to my midlife crisis! 😂

I have a 2018 XT5 and the Screen looks just like the one shown at 1:04. I find it a real Frustrating Experience to select Music from the USB Drive, a real PIA. My STS which didn't have a Nav System was far superior when it came to selecting Music, though it was stored on 6 CDs. As for the Apple thing, Apple has somehow removed about 90% of my Music from the Phone, and it is even worse for trying to select Songs, than the CUE system. The Manuals Cadillac provides would only be good for an Outhouse, and not as Reading Material. I refuse to waste money on OnStar, or that XM Radio thing. I never had activated them on my STS, even for the Trial Period. I did remove the Microphones from both the STS and the XT5, as there was no way to Disable-Remove the OnStar. I wish there was an Delete Option for all this type of Crap, when ordering a Vehicle.
Taking Panels off the Interior has always been a Disaster for me, cause even it they don't break during removal, they never go back together properly, and squeak and rattle after
Generally no squeaks and rattles from this car since taking off many of the panels multiple times.
USB operation isn't that great. You need to organize your music the right way for it to be somewhat useable and I believe the manual talks about it, but if not the Cadillacforums surely has a thread about it.
Honestly, all that is behind the times. With streaming music services for $10 a month you can listen to whatever you want whenever you want. You can also save specific albums and songs so you can just go to those. I know it's not what you are used to but it truly is a better system.
Is this where the amp pro module gets hooked up to install aftermarket speakers

Scale of 1-10 and an oil change being a 2. I would say 5. Not hard just time consuming but I can do it in less than an hour now.

Any new rattles after all the trim removal/replace? or issues having A/C ductwork properly seated or similar stuff?
Nope! Those metal clips really do well! I thought that maybe my HMI would rattle since it’s not as secure after breaking a clip but nothing.
Good question. I had work done on another GM product with ac/condenser and a rattle was created that made me want to choke the shop owner. We could NEVER find it.. people don't realize how big of a deal this is!
Looks like a Real PIA to change the Cabin Air Filter, Air Bag has to come out? I think the Engineers that come up with these Effed up Designs need to have their Heads repeatedly Bashed in. As bad as having to take the front of the Car off to be able to change a Headlight Bulb on my STS.

I am buying a 2014 Vsport this week. I believe it is running the CUE 2.0. I can’t decide if it would be better to upgrade to the 2.5 or go with the Tesla style screen and android system? I am an iPhone user and very adept at car stereo and system installations. I have seen both and both look great. I was hoping to get your opinion on this if you were to start fresh which way would you think is most beneficial?
I am a fan of CarPlay. I really don’t need anything else. Some people are happy with the Tesla style screen but it’s not perfect. You will have to accept some little quirks. I love the simplicity and reliability of the stock look with CarPlay.
I agree with you. I love sleek and clean. The first thing I though of was A: the bigger space for finger prints. B: I have been an IOS guy for many years. So the idea of figuring out compatibility around the factory, android and third party apps doesn’t sound appealing to me at all. Just want the CarPlay, clean and organized area and enjoy the ride! The part numbers vary as compatible HMIs can be used from various cars. Absolutely needs programming. Talk to one of the service providers listed in the description and they will tell you which parts to get if they don’t have already
What components come with it? I have the NAV in my 2014 ELR (just bought). Warranty will cover it.

Not sure. You should definitely ask white auto. Not sure the cluster fits… I doubt it though :(

Software won’t change the functionality. One reason there are changes to the functionality after this upgrade is improved processing in the HMI module
For 2016. It’s capable of handling things like CarPlay.

Once you have a wired CarPlay setup all you need is a $80 wireless CarPlay dongle like Carlinkit 5

I do have apple carplay in my 2016 escalade but no android auto GM refuse to update my CUE they said because android auto app not available in our region yet.

Hi. If you go to 19:19 on this video. You are showing the back of the radio module. The little yellow port by your left thumb I accidentally ripped the yellow wire that plugs into that and I wonder what's that for everything functions properly but I wonder what that wire was that I ripped. If you can please tell me please and thank you. In the morning I had my phone connected and the screen blacked out and gave me a communication error message in red letters. After a few seconds it turned back on but I still wonder if it has to do with that wire
I believe that is the XM antenna cable. I broke one too once and had to solder it to fix.
If you want to fix it just search gm yellow Sirius XM antenna. You will be able to buy the connector or a whole cable or extension cable. All will be helpful to fix.

No unfortunately there’s other infrastructure that’s not in place for that conversion.

Andy Valencia I don’t believe so. But alternatively you may want to look into the Chinese Android based large-screen units. I hear they aren’t perfect but would definitely be an upgrade. Check out the ATS Facebook groups.

My new phone connects to blue tooth and can connect thru USB, but for some reason won’t play music. But my older phone will connect and play music. Would this fix this problem?
cheifwaxallday420 sounds like a separate problem. Your phone should connect via USB and play music with any CUE system.
I just got a new iPhone 11 and it shows it’s connected on the screen but as I play music on the phone no sounds or song shows up on screen but the old phone works perfectly fine. Any ideas what it could be?
cheifwaxallday420 not sure about that one. Shouldn’t be a problem. But I guess the changed element is the phone so confirm all your phone settings are correct. Try the other USB port. Try a different cable. Wait for next iOS update too maybe.

You must not have a CTS? Look at navtool for something that can add cameras.

Get a more matte finish screen protector. I have one that’s glossy and it cuts down on finger prints a lot but matte finish would really do it

You still need the same items in the video as long as you have the CUE system. Talk to 404parts and they will get you setup!

I tried to do the upgrade on my new 2014 CTS. Things were going fine until I got to the radio module. Mine is held in by 4 (what you had plus one on top one on bottom) clips, not two and I don’t see any good way to get it out without breaking something. Anyone else have this problem?
It has to come out somehow. But even if you break tabs I’m sure a zip tie or two would be adequate to hold it in there
How different is the install process for a 2016 ATSv?
Very similar process but 2016 ATS-V should have it. Some of the early 2016s may have missed the boat though.

ezcompane do you have the PROJECTION icon on the CUE screen? Some ATS-Vs in 2016 also had projection but only could do one or the other: Apple car play or android auto. If you have a projection icon and Apple CarPlay doesn’t work, talk to your dealer and they may be able to “activate” the feature it already has. If you don’t have a projection icon you will probably need a new HMI 2.5. unit

I think If you get the necessary harness and programming from MVI they might have an option. Yours doesn’t have a backup cam? The MVI options have multiple camera inputs available
No backup cam 14 base model. I installed my upgrade, but now I’m getting a service airbag on my screen that wasn’t there before. Any idea of why that is happening? I didn’t disconnect the airbag during installation.
Caddy King hmm not sure. Unless the airbag wire got pinched or pulled too much. Have you tried doing a battery disconnect for awhile?
I went over my install and found a loose connection going to the airbag. All is well now. Great how to video! Thanks!

I have a 2016 SRX and an Iphone 7 Software version 13.1.3. In some of my reading I notice that the Iphone does not sync through the USB...only Bluetooth. If this is so, then the upgrade would do nothing for me. I really want Car Play in the auto. Can you clarify? BTW, really good job on the video.

Steve Sullivan I’ve double checked with some of my resources and there shouldn’t be any issues connecting via USB right now in your car. Confirm you have tried different ports and different cables? If you see album artwork it is likely connected via USB.
@@JetFuelOnly My apologies, I wasn't clear. I have not upgraded yet. Using the USB currently, I can not listen to Spotify or use hands free calling. I can only do it through the Bluetooth connection. When I upgrade, my Iphone will I be able to use USB for Spotify and maps? If I switch back to CUE for radio, will I still be able to use the USB for calls? Lastly, I would like to upgrade the Center Console USB and aux jack that another video referenced. I do not find it in GMPartshouse. I am looking to do CUE 2.5 and the Console at the same time. Would you reference where you got the USB upgrade. Thanks again.

Steve Sullivan - ok. On a stock system of your SRX, all phone calls are made Bluetooth. That’s normal. But playing music from your music library should show on screen with album artwork. However with Spotify I forget how it is.
After upgrade you will be able to use phone through USB and have the Spotify app right on screen with Apple car play and android auto.
As for the upgraded port, I see it’s not listed as an option anymore but I assume it’s included. A phone call to them would solve that question. Otherwise the part number is in the description of the other video and can sometimes be found on eBay or the GM wholesale part sites like www.gmpartsdirect.com.

@@JetFuelOnly Hey Daniel, Steve Sullivan again. I took your advice and called GMPartshouse. I got a tech and told him the car I have.(2016 Caddy SRX) He told me that I have to add the Nav Apple/Android for the extra 200 because the car never had it prior to upgrade. He also told me that I will have the USB Aux as part of the kit. Does this sound right to you? Like you, I want it as clean as possible for as little as possible. The tech seemed like he knew what he was talking about, but not like you. Thanks again for your patience with this tech deficient person.

The HMI part number? I don’t. There’s actually a few that work I believe. Either way it will have to be programmed to work with your VIN.

HMI 2.5 will give android auto but maps are separate. You can get new maps from the dealer.

For everyone who reads this: Irakli and I discussed this problem on the FB groups. This happened due to not having the modules programmed to match the VIN on the car you install the modules into. I don’t think I was clear enough in the video so for future viewers that do this mod, you cannot just swap parts. You must get VIN programming.

I have a 2016 Ats-V but want the 2017-19 cue system. Is that version 3.0 and is there a company that offers this upgrade?
As of now ... not that I know of. I know someone was working on it with the GMC Sierra and Silverado (similar modules) but I don't see any progress. Don't worry, you aren't missing too much. ;)
@@JetFuelOnly The major difference is that you can get to the main selections from any screen. On mine you always have to hit home to switch from one selection to another. Could that possibly be a module change to 3.0?
@@tazoriginal sounds like you just need to add icons to the top of the screen? Works like iPhone, press and hold and then move around.
@@JetFuelOnly didn’t know you could add icons for the main radio functions but I’ll look into it. 2017+ models have it automatically. Guess they realized it was a pain to have to go to the main menu to switch between functions.
Ok we may be talking about different things? But look into it. As seen in my video I have icons across the top with phone, maps, audio, pandora etc. I think you get up to 5. What functions did you want? I think skip or tune (and memory stations) Are usually accessible at the bottom of all screens and of course steering wheel

You can’t do this upgrade unless you have CUE 2.0. Or the Chevy/gmc/Buick equivalent

Because if you have a 2014-2015 you have the slower CUE that doesn’t have Android Auto and AppleCarplay.

There’s currently no upgrade for the 2017. You already have a pretty good version far better than. 2014
