  • www.permacutlureartisans.com - Erik Ohlsen takes you on a tour of an edible oasis he created on a 1/3 acre asphalt lot, encouraging you to think about sustainable living for small-town and suburban life. In the face of drought, fire, peak oil, energy depletion, soil depletion and more, what can you do to live a more eco-friendly life?

We need MILLIONS of these! Literally millions! Think of all those vacant lots--all over this country (USA) turned into oases. Some of those lots are huge, taking up several acres. Wow! Let's do it!

This is probably the most complete, concise and informative video on Permaculture gardening I've seen yet. Very well done. Thank you. Working towards a similar set up here in upstate NY.

I'm glad you've not had a confrontation with the city over capturing rainwater. It should be a basic right to capture rainfall on one's land but many people have run into trouble.
I really want to learn how to do this sort of thing and help communities and individuals plan edible urban forests.

I cant answer in detail, but i do know these guys personally and know they are great teachers and have an amazing portfolio of professional permaculture design projects. Erik & crew are inspirational leaders in the local permie movement.

I saw a video with people who had a comfrey plant that produces only infertile seeds in their garden, maybe that's an idea that could be useful to you. Very good video :)

I had the same question. Did you dig it up? I am concerned about the toxicity of the asphalt and am considering digging it all out.
Also, how deep a ground cover do you need for espaliered fruit trees? If I dig up my asphalt, I'll still have concrete underneath. I'm also in USDA Zone 3 so cold winters are an issue for my tree roots

Aloha, good question above, what did u do with the asphalt? I just got back from Australia, Geoff lawton farm , he would be proud :)
3 years, what is the business side of what you guys are doing, are you tracking cost, food production, inputs and outputs. Do u guys go to a farmers market, sell to a restaurant? ? Or are you guys just teaching others permaculture only. To show u r a successful sustainable business with a earth ethic would be incurable move forward to others serious involvement
