  • A NON-ORCHID POST!
This is Selenicereus oxypetalum or The Queen of the Night Cactus from Mexico. We have had a big plant growing in our orchid nursery for many years and this is a smaller propagation from it. The flowers only last for one night and as we are not normally working at the nursery that late, when this plant came into bud it was a great opportunity to take it home to enjoy the process of the flowers opening throughout the evening.
The time lapse videos were taken over about 2 hours and the fully opened flowers are as large as your hand and filled the room with a sweet scent. It’s absolutely fabulous, but by morning the flowers had drooped and died with the twisted stem an adaptation to enable the seeds to develop after it would have been pollinated by moths or even bats in the wild!
