From memory, this about a guy that owned a duplex house... and lived on one side of it. He would live in one side of the duplex for a while.. live his life... then get tired of it, then move over to the other side. According to Stipe, he would flip-flop back and forth several times... habitating both sides of the house as saw fit.. eventually the fellow passed away, and later was found copies of a book he had written called "Life and how to live it." cheers
Either way... this song... this version gives me goosbumps. Holy crap. If you tire of one side, the other side serves you best. I will write a book, it will be called... "Life and how to live it."
Most people who say things like this are simply boasting ... but not in this case. I was there. It was fucking amazing. Also, the Echo & the Bunnymen tours from the same era (prior to Pete DeFreitas' sad passing).
I saw them on the Fables tour in Champaign, Illinois at Follenger Auditorium. My brother and I got to go backstage thanks to him being in the fan club. Plus we didn't have to pay for the tickets.
i didn't mean 2003 was the old days. I meant the performance they gave was like watching them in the old days. Like back in the mid 80's when they were performing this song on a regular basis.
@galloping5273 I seen REM at a club in Wildwood NJ in 84. I played video games with Mike Mills. And Stipe just walked around the club with a old army jacket and satchel. And he had the girl from "The one I love " video on his side!
i've often noticed that: camera-wielding dumbasses and editing asswipes are always screwing someone out of concert films completely... Scorsese showed Charlie Watts for 4 seconds at most in his lame film of a Stones concert..
This version rocks bigtime. Huge energy for one of the greatest songs ever in rock and roll in my humble opinion. Wow.
He's Magic. He sings with every ounce of his body snd soul. There is nobody else like him.
Michael Stipe 🎶💥🤘🎤💙💙
When I was searching for a live version of this song, I was NOT expecting something this energetic. pure awesomeness.
I saw them on the Fables tour and this one just floored me then
Never expected to be just as blown away from a performance over 15 years later. Wow!

Possibly my favorite song in their superb catalog. The back story of the song is fascinating because it's true.
So much power and so much power in Michael's vocals!
This and driver 8, my 2 favourite REM songs
Both great songs from a highly underrated album
Guessing Fables is your favourite album
Great choices! Mine are 7 Chinese bros, So central rain, and talk about the passion.

Rock &a rolla in its purest sense!
This blows the '87 version on the Document 25th anniversary rerelease out of the water.
Nah. They had a real drummer than.
What a rockin version!!!!
If u have'nt already, find REMchout's videos. Kickass stuff from from early 80's. Murmer, Carnival...., Fables.
So good, and those backing vocals!
This is absolute fire 🔥

What a gem.
Peter Buck there can be only one. No one plays like that guy, as far as I can tell.
You should have been there live in the 80's when they did this song... The Fables tour was amazing.

Unequivocally, the best version ever. Ever. Don't do it...
Wow.. I never knew that. I always wondered... I mean since I was a teenager what had happened to those books.
I would have liked to have read it.
By listening to this guitar parts I realize Sonic Youth kinda owes something to R.E.M...
+Vinicius Azevedo Along with Nirvana! R.E.M. never went mainstream, mainstream went R.E.M. ;-)
Always thought the guitar intro could easily be Sonic youth
Lol..."Teen Age Riot"...R.E.M really was ahead of every band by at least 3 years.
My favorite song
+fred6059 it is one of the best rock and roll songs ever.
Wow I don't think I've ever seen stipe this aggressive before

I got on the REM train in 1984! That makes me super cool, right?
The coolest
I can't go a day without listening to an REM song. A little band from Athens GA. And I am a kid from central NJ. Go figure!!
@galloping5273 I seen REM at a club in Wildwood NJ in 84. I played video games with Mike Mills. And Stipe just walked around the club with a old army jacket and satchel. And he had the girl from "The one I love " video on his side!
God, what a fantastic performance! Damn!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Oh jeez.. I didn't know that. Thanks.
Actually, the best REM songs are their least known songs.
Turn them on to some "Chronic Town".
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Wow!!
:D
that's funny because my dad is writing a book called "Life and How to Live It" :)
alright thanks, ill check it out when i get a chance.
What exactly were his carpenter and his pockets up to? I have no idea, and that's one of the many, many reasons that I love REM so much.
god damn that's good
Life and how to live it
Ack... Scott messed up Pete's intro.
Still a great version.
💯✅
The Revenge of Rickenbacker
Dear Cameraman,
Mike Mills is in the band, too, you know.
Playing lead bass
@@ScratchMountain nicely said!
