    Third drawbar is the actual note being played (fundamental), while the first drawbar is one octave below that. Second drawbar is a fifth above the fundamental, then the remaining white drawbars go up in octaves. Middle drawbar is a fifth, second drawbar from the right is a fifth also, and the third drawbar from the right is the only third.

    I've played guitar through big stacks. I've played drums with subs under the drum risor. I've played pretty solid Hamond sims, but the only time I've really dug in to an instrument and felt like it just might choose to fight back, was on a Hamond through a 147, mashing that expression pedal down with all bars out. One of the best musical experiences of them all.

      I will say that I was invited to play at a festival this year, and had never played a real B-3, I have only used my Nord, at the time 4D. Nord is so close to the original that I knew within a few minutes how to get the tone I was looking for out of the real deal, although it can't prepare you for how the preset keys work.

    Great video; I’ve recently bought the Yamaha Reface YC, just to experiment with Drawbars; this has has given me plenty of inspiration for tonight...one question jack, were there any percussion settings you were playing with too, as I’ve noticed these change the flavour of some of the bars....oh, and also, love your work on these shows, and the new tutorial style vids have been awesome. Cheers

      Hey Nick, thanks so much for watching and the kind comment mate. In short answer to your question, no. I tend to only whack percussion on if I was in a traditional Organ Trio style setting or if I was really not cutting through on stage and need the extra. Always found it quite a hard strident sound and didn't suit my playing. Much love and thanks again X

    • @dennisristow2102
      @dennisristow2102 Před 5 lety +3

      Only on the H (Hammond) style, the 1' first drawbar becomes inactive when you turn on percussion. This is a correct emulation of a real Hammond B3/C3 and could account for the "flavor changes" you mentioned. Other Hammonds use different drawbars to drive the percussion. The YC also does the full Hammond foldback on the higher drawbars. That is, if you pull out only the higher stops, once they reach their highest C, they will repeat the last octave as you go higher. Example: if you pull out the lowest two drawbar stops along with the highest 1' stop, the effect up the keyboard past the 1' high C max will become apparent and is also part of that great Hammond "flavor."

    • @jackduxbury1632

  • @oskarileikos
    @oskarileikos Před 4 lety +2

    I would always choose the 3rd bar only -setting over the 1st bar out -setting, since those two settings give exactly the same sound and harmonics - only that the 1st bar out is one octave lower than the 3rd bar out. So if I want to visualize the keyboard the same way the whole time, I want to hear the notes I play. Then if I want to play one octave lower, then I can just move one octave down on the keyboard instead of transposing the whole keyboard one octave down by using only the 1st drawbar.

    • @mellowords
      @mellowords Před 2 lety

      I've always wondered if there's any actual differences between playing the lowest drawbar 8va vs playing the fundamental drawbar at the same pitch. I do think there might be some more gain or low-mid buildup on the lowest drawbar

    Hello, Great demonstration! Wow! I own the B4000 + ferrofish and the Arturia. I'm having fun like crazy with all this since I added a Neo Ventilator as a Leslie. So there is the total.
    However, I still have a question because I can't seem to find an answer. Indeed, during my research on the net to find the restration configurations of great organists like Jimmy Smith or Eroll Garner, I saw that we were talking about taste. For example, I read a registration setup that said: "adjust 1 'to taste for whistle".
    I don't understand how should I set drawbar 1 'to set "taste for whisle".
    If you have any idea what this is let me know. I thank you in advance.

    • @f.ziegler9950
      @f.ziegler9950 Před rokem

      'set to taste' means 'set as you like it', and drawbar 1' ('one foot') is the nineth drawbar in the row - which will indeed may make the B3 sound like a whistle. Does that make sense in your context?

    Drawbar combination is not something static. The "best" combination depends on acoustics, volume output, and other instruments in the mix (especially in the band with electric guitars ). Because Hammond organs don't have velocity-sensitive keyboard, manipulating drawbars is also the way to add dynamics.

    Well, pardon me for stickin' my face into this shindig, but...that thing (module) doesn't sound all that much like a Hammond. Kinda squeaky and shrill, especially at the high end. I suppose if you need "a Hammond sound" in your rig - and you're not an organist - it would suffice. No tactile feel, though, since you'll be playing it with a MIDI controller that has diving-board keys on it. I'm 71, been playing the Hammond since I was 13: 58 years experience. (I was also a factory-trained Hammond repair technician for many years, since I hadda EAT, too...) THIS is what a Hammond sounds like: czcams.com/video/OGB0V_268vM/video.html Any questions?

      I have a '58 B3 and I have to pull that first bar back a tad. Also... add percussion and C2 or C3 chorus for a lot of Emerson's sound.

    Turn off the C3 so we can hear the pure tone.

      Agreed, and who is anyone to say what the definitive draw bar settings are, it depends on the feel of the room, it depends on the groove, sometimes I'll pull all bars to start a solo just to shock the room and then move it back to a more groove tone.

    pulling out all the stops? , these are not "stops" but drawbars .....

    This isn't helpful at all. It's just too vague and simplistic. What you are basically saying is just pull out more drawbars and then mess about. AND not all drawbar organs have the same drawbars anyway, so you are just showing how you play the organ you have in front of you. Your commentary is therefore pretty irrelevant. Too much waffle and showing off.
