Saved my ass!! Pulled into a BP station on Saturday night, Memorial Day Weekend towing a car on a trailer. F'ing BP.....gas handles are green and diesel are black. Opposite of every station in the US. I was weary and worn out from driving nine hours and just going through the motions. Sheer horror when I realized I was pumping gas not diesel. 18 gallons worth. Freaking out thinking I'm going to be screwed until Tuesday morning and a half day away from my destination. Then it hit me....you can damn near learn brain surgery on CZcams nowadays so I Googled pretty much the same thing everyone here has and BAM! It worked exactly as Mr. Blair described. Now I'd add that the description can be as comprehensibly done in about 5 minutes as the nearly 30 on this video but that was a SMALL price to pay. Thanks very much for posting this video!
Just put 10 gallons of diesel in my ram from BP. Not 30 seconds down the road it starts running bad. Really bad! I immediately thought of the whole BP pump handle thing. Which my son actually did once. Anyway, learned a few lessons here. How to drain my tank, and never, ever, purchase anything from BP. Even their diesel sucks.
You are not alone - my "experience" happened early in the morning before I had a cup of Joe. Just absentminded is all - and not quite awake yet! :)
Such beautiful body’s in the 4th gen. I never knew the details on algae growing in diesel. I’ve always know. Water in diesel are always a headache. Thanks for the great info!
Good info Marion. Your videos are a great heads up for general maintenance and issues with our trucks. We appreciate you making them.
Thank you, much appreciated.
Mr. Marion, really enjoy your sense of humor (the self notes in yellow)!!!!
My son got me a power probe for Christmas and we used it today to prime the fuel system after changing the fuel filters. We referenced your video and it worked like a charm! Thanks for sharing this information with us!
Thanks Marion. Loved the info and commentary always enjoy your humor.
Appreciate that!
Im going to install an extra large tank so this will be super helpful to drain the tank prior to removal. Thank you!
I installed a Raycor on my 1978 Chevrolet diesel pickup. That piece of crap was the last GM product I will ever own in my life. Bought very reliable Toyotas until I needed a 3/4 again in 1994. Total pos Ford, never again. Back to being a reliable Toyota owner, 2002. Needed a proper 3/4 ton to haul my 30' travel trailer all over this great land. Being a retired heavy equipment operator there is no other choice but Cummins. My 2018 Ram Limited Tungsten Edition @50,000 miles has run flawlessly. Mostly towing mile, only my hands have serviced it. Thanks Marion! Oh yeah 😂 still a Toyota fan, just bought her the first one she's ever owned. OK it's a Lexus, work hard save and treat her right!!
Great video Mr. Blair, all your vids are informative. I used to have a 2015 CTD Ram 2500 but went to a 2018 Ram 2500 with the 6.4L Gasser Hemi due to having a Truck Bed Camper and needing more payload capacity vs towing. 3100 lbs in the Hemi vs 2300 lbs in the Cummins engine 2500's . I still keep up on the diesels though ..Just in case! God bless and keep posting Sir! ;)
I didn't think I would live long enough to get any information from this video
That funny and true, ha
BAAAHAAAAA
Great tip for using the fuse box to run the pump. This saved me a ton of time. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Very informative video as usual. I kinda like your rambling, and the in video comments were funny. Keep up the good work.
Thanks much
Love your videos and your sense of humor.
Great video! Just did my filters in my 2017 thanks to your video. Keep them coming!
Thank you.
I'm at a fuel station, and it is 0500. My worker fills my truck with 93 octane, and you had it back on the ground in 10 minutes. Not counting the 10 I listened before you showed me what to do lol. Thanks man very appreciative
That's awesome, thanks.
Really appreciate this video. Made the same mistake on my 2017 RAM 3500. One note, I almost gave up on this solution and stared to disconnect the tank so I could run my siphon. I switched the jumper from the battery to slot 70 to a 14 gauge single strain wire from a coil of Romex (I'm a home builder, not a mechanic). The 14 gauge provided enough juice to run the fuel pump. The two testers / probes I had tried initially didn't provide enough current. After draining the tank, I filled with 2 gallons of fresh diesel. Truck started right up, and stayed running for about a 1/2 mile to the nearest gas station. I topped of the tank, went to start it and no dice. I went thru the priming instructions (turn to Run for 15 seconds, back to off, back to Run) but still no luck. Not sure if I clogged the filters or if the fuel pump went out. Towed to my house and decided I will troubleshoot when the sun is up.
One other note... if your new to the key fob stuff, pressing the start button on the truck (without foot on the brake) will cycle thru from Off, to ACC, to Run. Silly that I never knew this. Never took the time to learn as I hate the whole fob concept. Constantly loosing the thing, while I'm in the truck driving! Yes... I'm turning into my father! Don't like change!
Another note... I would suggest against attempting to siphon the fuel from the tank. Again, not a mechanic. But if you were born before 1980 and your a custom to the old school siphon technique, your in for a long day. Evidently, there are inline safety features (valves?) that are designed to seal the tank during a roll over. Good luck getting your hose by those.
Good stuff Mr. Blair, thanks for the video.
Appreciate, thanks.
Well I have allot more knowledge on water in my fuel !! Thanks for the vide. I have that vass or vast lift with two filters . Big dog or something I can't remember but it's loud
Thank you Marion! From a Texan in Arkansas
I came back to your video to watch again. Jumping the pump fuse is better then cycling the key off and on when I change my fuel filters to prime the filters. Instead of disconcert the fuel hose in the rear just open the drain valve on the rear fuel filter. Use a peace of 3/8" x 30" tubing on the drain.
Yes, I like that method also. Especially if you need to drain the tank.
Love the content Marion !!!!
I am new to diesel trucks, but after suffering a little bout this winter with diesel fuel and not putting an additive in the fuel to keep it from gelling and then receiving a code of P0087, I am trying to absorb all I can about it. The good thing was after the temp got back to the 30's I never had any trouble with check engine light and it was a big sigh of relief. All I could think of was how much it might cost me 🥲.
Thought about ordering the service manual from Tech Authority for the RAM 3500, but after hearing some of the stories that you can't print anything from the USB or use the browser to do searches when viewing the manual, I have been trying to watch as many videos as I can.
Yeah the manual is terrible
Sure wish there was a manual for understanding wives.
Thank you for this information! After a long weekend camping and pretty exhausted we stopped on the way home to top off (luckily a block from the house) and guess what... two gallons of gasoline straight in the tank (probably had 20+ diesel still in the tank). Drove to the house and prepared to syphon the tank dry and refill, but they have an anti-syphon on the tanks now due to roll over accidents to keep the fuel from dumping out. So guess I will purchase that gadget and see if I can pump the tank dry and refill it that way.
You don't need to buy the gadget to do it but it's handy, just jump 12 volts to the top of the fuse 70. Make sure ignition is off. Best to pull the fuse.
@@MarionBlair thank you. I did buy that tool and then put a 35 gallon container under the truck and just opened up the bleeder from the rear filter completely and jumped the pump. didnt take long to empty the tank. when the range said 10 miles left i refueled and everything is great.
You are welcome sir like I said I love your videos especially Kentucky fried chicken. Keep them coming sir.
thank you
I would like to Thank you Sir!
You saved my Bacon today.
Thank you so much!
Excellent!
I fill up at a BP station that has a state of the art tank monitoring system. I walk into the BP lobby and he has all of the diagnostics of the tanks displayed. Water is always at 0.00%. Ill never go anywhere else, wont put a nozzle into my tank unless it has a proper diagnostic read out.
Great info as always!
thank you
I accidentally added 3 gallons of gas into my 2019 ram 2500. I will be draining the fuel tank from the back filter. After draining i can add diesel and i should be fine correct?
What if my tank pump is running be no fuel is pouring out? 3/4 tank. Hammond,LA thanks
Great video as usual. Thanks Marion. Ordered me a probe to keep in my truck.
It's a great tool, thank you much.
Marion what do you mean you bought a wiring schematic for your truck? Is this something that Mopar will sell for specific VIN? I really really would love to have one.
Yes, the tech authority website sells them and also a service information CD. Tech Authority is FCA's branch that does their manuals. www.techauthority.com/ I have a video on it also. czcams.com/video/dkKzbaNlu2E/video.html
Great now I gotta but a power probe!
It's a neat little tool. thanks.
You can also just use the engine fuel filter canister drain valve instead of unhooking the line.
Excellent video! I got some bad diesel..my 2500 running real bad. I'm gona drain what's left..should I change the filters too?
yes i would
Thanks for the info Marion. Do you reccomend any "water dispersing" additives, such as diesel kleen, Haynes, or lucas?
No, Cummins and ram doesn't recommend it. If you get water, it's going to more than likely be gallons not ounces and nothing will disperse that. Personal opinion.
In a typical gas engine you want the water to mix with the gas so the engine will burn it. In a Diesel the water will cause lots of damage if you try to burn it. You want the water to not mix with the Diesel so the water separator can have a chance to remove it before it gets to your injection system.
good to know if you are ever on the road and have trouble. I thought about carrying a extra fuel can and some hose for a emergency. Can you tell me what size hose I need for each filter?
check this video, I I'm on the road with no internet. Put a hose clamp at the filter drain or it will fall off on the front. The back, I've found is better without a drain hose cause the valve will leak on the outside of the hose and make a mess any way. I now use a container right under the filter on the rear. Permanent on the front, I'm now just letting it hang in front of the front diff. czcams.com/video/uw66rykV6SY/video.html
On my 2015 Ram cummins 2500 i couldn't get the pump to turn on like you did. Didn't have a power probe just used a test light. Any other suggestions?
The test light was limiting the current flow. A bulb is a resistor.
is there an additive that I can put in my diesel that can keep the water in solution with the diesel so that at least it moves through the tank.
If you Google it you will find several but I wouldn't put it in. I'd be afraid it would cause more damage than good. A small amount of water will get picked up by your filter and you can drain it.
Even you know that your video is painfully long but I have a 2002 2500 CTD and my fuse box is nothing like yours. I have a fuel relay and 2 engine control fuses (if I remember correctly). Any suggestions?
Looks like fuse 20 to me?
I think pulling the rear filter off and running pump would work?
Yea, I didn't think of that but should be the same results.
Where by chance did you get your power probe?
Got it off Amazon. Only paid around $60 however. www.amazon.com/Power-Probe-III-Clamshell-Automotive/dp/B00G4YUWMC/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=power+probe&qid=1602988657&s=automotive&sr=1-5
Marion I have a blue line and a white line which one Do I disconnect to drain the fuel tank
Not sure about the blue vs white but you would disconnect the one coming out of the tank going into the filter. The line that runs up t the front of the truck from the filter should not be disconnected. The other one is the one coming out of the tank into the filter. So, if you disconnect that one, you'll catch the diesel straight out of the tank and not have to filter it. Go straight into a bucket or whatever.
do you have your truck on aux power or leave it completely turned off when draining fuel?
no, off. leave it off.
Couldnt you just remove the sensor from the water separator, and just lt it drain from the bottom of the filter? I mean, if you are already going to replace that filter anyway?
I think that would be fine. And as you say, replace the filter and purge and probably replace the front filter for good measure.
Does it make you lose power? Mine seems it’s losing power but I don’t think it’s the turbo or boost leak
dirty air filter would but you'd probably get a code
Question! My truck 6.7 cummins. Has been sitting. Sitting and being started every couple of weeks. But the diesel has been sitting for a year or two! Should i take the diesel out?? Just finished watching the video. No lights are on. No water light as you stated. What are your thoughts?
Hi, I just saw that on the forum. Just to be on the safe side, I think I would pump or drain a little out and take a look at it and smell it. It's good that it's been started every couple of weeks. My guess is, it's still good.
@@MarionBlair just ordered the tool you had just to be safe. Love your videos!! U da man keep rockin on!!
@@lala7521 Good, for the money, it's something to keep under your seat.
@@MarionBlair Tested and replaced all fluids. Diesel was good after doing your process. Power probe is awesome for this! Thank you again. U rock!
@@lala7521 thank you very much for that I'm glad it was able to help
What kind of wire should I use to gap those?
Anyting you got but a piece of solid number 14 will be fine.
So I did this because I accidentally put gasoline in the system. It never got to the filters, high pressure pump or injectors. Once I got it all out we refilled the tank with diesel and all of a sudden it won't stay running. It starts and then dies.
We replaced the lift pump, fuel filters and fuel regulator, all yield the same results.
The wierd thing is the truck will stay running if you open the water seperator or if you disconnect the fuel regulator sensor.
Any help would be much appreciated
It sounds like the sensor but I have to look at my schematic have you tried changing the sensor? Also check for any codes
@@MarionBlair are you referring to the sensor on the fuel rail?
I did replace the regulator/actuator on the cp3, lift pump and fuel filters. It runs when the fuel filter water seperator is open and fuel is flowing out of the filter housing but when I close it back up it shuts off. Checked all lines, nothing is crossed, nothing is leaking and everything is hooked up as intended.
Codes present are P2509, P0254, P0562 and P008A
So what was the outcome..what was wrong?
How can I get ahold of you? I have a question that I just cannot get answered and I stay away from the dealers. I hotshot for a living and I've got a question regarding my 2018 Ram 2500 and its rear diff. Thanks Marion, keep the great information coming

Damn water in diesel gets in the cylinder and will lock it up and bend a piston rod.
Cornbread 🤘
Why’s the name on the prob? Here did you get it from? Thk
It’s called a “Power Probe” and you can get from Amazon, EBay or your local parts store.

Marion I have a 2019 ram and I accidentally poured about 2 cups of DEF fluid into the tank now I went under there and I saw a cockpit and I opened it and let out about a pint a pint and a half of diesel fuel what do I have to do to save my truck I did not start the engine
I would drain several gallons and see if I get any water. and if you see the water in fuel light come on stop immediately and drain it from rear fuel filter. Is that water sloshing around on the bottom it's probably going to work its way over to the pump suction so you may have to do this several times but the last thing you want is for it to get past that real filter.
You might want to hook up to the fuse box and pump it out would be the best way you probably won't see any out of the filter if you haven't used your lift pump.
Don't start your truck until you pumped several gallons out of it and verify there's no water.
Having said that, the safest thing would be to drop the tank and completely clean it out but I'm not sure it's worth it for a small amount
this is just my opinion that's what I would do as you drive the truck around it's going to be sloshed around and work its way over to the lift pump
Hey Dennis, I accidentally put DEF in my Ram 2016-2500 4x4 when it was about 2 years old. The DEF messed up the engine. However, I found out that the comprehensive part of my insurance paid for the repairs that totaled just under $21,000.00 (yep, under $21K). I was never so glad to have insurance. What surprised me was when the insurance company told me how often it happens with Fords & Dodge. She said GMC has DEF access under hood. Hope this info helps you or anyone else that pulls the same boneheaded stunt I pulled.
You look good for your age
Nice video thank you
I’m not going to drop the tank the truck hasn’t been moved or started. Tomorrow I’m gong to pump out all the fuel. Change rear filter And keep my fingers crossed thank you again
I think you'll be fine with no more order that we're talkin about, that's what I would do
if you brought it to the dealer they would do exactly what you're going to do is pump out the tank they would not drop it
Filled up diesel from an empty tank at a gas station and ended up having water. Engine turned into limp mode and i am going to do this methof instead of dropping the tank
The dealer doesn't drop the tank, they just drain it. Should be ok.
Went the route of taking the fuel line off the rear filter, and the line fitting at the fuel pump broke.
How's that happen
@@MarionBlair Brittle I guess. The line was rigid and the plastic piece snapped. Big "Oops!" on my part!
Man I wish he was doing an 2008. This doesn't work on my truck
I'm in the same boat. I have a 2009 2500, but the fuse box is different, and the internet is saying the fuel pump is run by the tipm. Did you ever figure out how to engage the fuel pump? I have like 20 gallons of gas to pump out.
czcams.com/video/bz1winajJzw/video.html Looks like fuse 20?
What happened to you going to show how to do that with out your fancy probe???
In the Video isn't it?
@@MarionBlair I've watched it 2 times and I've yet to see it
Yea, it's there, start watching at about 15:30 or so. That's what I used to pump the diesel with. It's simple, red on positive, black on negative, probe on fuse 70. Actually you don't have to pull the fuse because the other side is up against an open contact in the relay. Thanks.
@@MarionBlair can I just connect a wire to the pos terminal of battery and stuck other end into the fuse slot?
@@sssearching yes. Keep your ignition switch off while you're doing this.
