I am 65 years old. When I was very young, probably about 7 years old, my grandmother made Cathedral Window Quilts. I would spend many hours cutting out the squares for her. The template was card board, one size for muslin, and one size for the "pretty" fabric. I would pride myself for how big my stacks were!!! She sewed them all by hand and they were beautiful. In my early 30's, I decided I was going to make one. I thought I could surely accomplish this, because my grandmother had absolutely no formal education. WRONG!! I had no clue, my quilt never got big enough to cover a barbie doll bed . I think I can try again, with the help of your instruction. My sister has one of these quilts that my grandmother made, and I don't think my sister ever cut out a square !!!! Bless you for the video and the memories that have surfaced for me.

25yrs, is shorter than my quilt! I started mine in the early 80s having entered a bolster cushion, in cathedral patchwork, into a competition. I too was a novice at hand sewn patchwork but having won 3rd prize I thought,I can do this! So I set about planning a quilt. Family and working life intervened so I set it aside. Now in 2024 I’ve revisited it and realised that my hand sewing and patchwork piecing back then was embarrassing!! It’s three quarters done with hundreds of squares cut, needles and thread still with the project. After 40 years, developing my skills in embroidery & patchwork I’m determined to finish it and leave a completed work for whom ever wants to enjoy it. Thank you for being so honest in your tutorial. It has inspired me to accept what was and enjoy finishing my UFO.

Thanks so much for this tutorial! I began quilting back in 1976 and always wanted to do a Cathedral Window quilt, but thought I would never live long enough to finish it! (I usually do simple, traditional quilt patterns and really don't like the look of the machine sewn Cathedral Window patterns...they seem a bit fake to me.) At 72, I am just finishing up a couple of Grandma's Flower Garden quilts for my granddaughters, which they helped pick fabric scraps for. It has taken 2 years for me to get the tops done (EPP hexies) but the actual quilting is still to go. Nevertheless, I do think I will go ahead and begin this Cathedral Window quilt, but I'm going to challenge my sisters and my daughters to combine our efforts this year and see what we come up with. (Otherwise, I seriously doubt I would live long enough or have the dexterity to finish it! LOL). We could have a "put it together party" and draw straws for the end result (which would, hopefully be big enough to be called a "quilt"). It might be a pipe dream, but I'm ready to try! Thanks again for the inspiration and clear instructions!

I found one, started by someone at a rummage sale. It broke my heart to see it so neglected so I bought it for 1 dollar, had to wash it as it had stains and smelled bad, but it came out of the machine looking good. I have been working on it off and on for about 8 months now. I could not match the fabric in the piece I found so I just decided to go with what I had on hand and it’s fine. I think the different fabric will one day tell a story of how it must have been made by more then one person. Hope I finish it or on to the next person who finds it. I do it by machine and the pattern it makes on the back is really nice.

Last year I took up EPP & love it. It only took 50+ years to find joy in hand piecing. I'm sure that having a less hectic life helps!! I love your quilt & I don't think you should correct any of your misteps unless it is absolutely neccessary. It's a story of how far you've come as a quilter. Thank you for the easy to follow and understand production! I always assumed that the Cathedral Windows pattern was super complicated, but now I feel like this would be the perfect project to work on during my quilting get togethers with the girls! I need something that is easy that I can throw in a bag and take with me. I'm psyched!

There are so many out there. If you are in the United States, go to a Joann Fabrics store and ask to see the muslin. They will definitely have several different ones to chose from. Get the mid-priced one. That could be my preference now, if I had it do over again. I hope this helps!

I too have a "forever" project. My mother passed away two years ago this coming week. Her baby crib had a cathedral windows quilt made by her grandmother and my sister and I loved getting to use it (most often when we were sick). I was able to get a number of mom's shirts and blouses and thought making a C.W. for my sister would be nice since I got the original quilt. I've been working on this on and off for a year.
I so wished I had your video when I began.
My accuracy is juvenile and my original throw size project has shrunk down to a wall hanging. But now that I've seen YOUR technique, I think I may try again and make her that throw.
Thank you for sharing your talents with the world. ☺️

I recently found a quilt going through my in-laws items. I put it up for sale for $40. ( it had some stainns in the folds) My sister in law said she was unaware of anyone in the family who quilted. I received an offer from someone, but they lived too far away, and I didn't want to ship it. Anyways, she told me it was a pattern called the cathedral window. I was curious to see how it was made, so that is how I found you. Seeing how much work is involved, I'm either going to keep it or up the price. Thank you for this video.

My friend was so embarrassed but I was intrigued. I’ve made other quilts but just decided today to make one by hand (as the mother was doing) and that it would be a Cathedral Window.
